Been meaning to do this for a wee while now (seven months counts as "wee", right?), but have never quite managed to get around to posting about it.
Until now!
So, well, title says it all really - who is interested in a London meet up of some form, around December or January ish time? We can figure out locations and agendas when we've got a few people interested, I guess, but it could be a purely photographical meet or a purely social (aka "let's get drunk") meet or a halfway house; anything's on the cards.
I know there's a fair few people in Londinium so maybe we can get a bigger turn out than the last one...
Ooh ooh can I come?
December is def out for my trip just cos my parents are coming over but I'm taking some time off in January to go to Bath and London :D
I'm free when ever really...I didnt get involved last time as it was all a bit weird at beginning of the year as I'd only just started. But yea I'd be game for it this time round :-)
yay ! ill try to make this one i missed the last one as i was working...half way house :) or a pure photographic day is cool...as long as i can turn up drunk :P
@toast You also offered to teach me that thing with the coffee :P and show me around London and just for that comment, I'll turn a weekend into a week :P
@eyebrows@indiannie_jones@andycoleborn you know when organising a riot its generally not advisable to advertise your destination on the interent beforehand - a mobile number with a recorded message that tells the location 1 hour before is the standard.
Blimey! I'm impressed with the turn out; I make that 21 folk if everyone makes it! This is going to have to be some bench... or phone box... I think we're going to need a Tardis, @edpartridge@rich57 !
Ok so, dates. The feeling I'm getting is that the last two weekends in Jan are the best ones, so lets throw a vote up.
Weekend One - Saturday 22nd Jan
To register your vote for W1 simply dial 0181 811 818 and add 1 to the end. Wait no I mean: just reply in this thread and say you want weekend one!
Weekend Two - Saturday 29th Jan
Similarly, if you want to register your vote for W2, attach two bits of blue paper to the feet of a carrier pigeon and - no sorry, again; I mean: just reply in this thread saying you want weekend two!
Or of course, if you're easy (matron) and could go either way (matron) reply indicating this, and let's see where this takes us...
Weekend Two - Saturday 29th Jan for me.
I'd be struggling to make the weekend before.
Also, technically, under the rules I've just made up @eyebrows you'd have to still be doing the project to be part of the 365 meet, so you HAVE TO carry on in 2011. So there :).
I couldn't reach the number provided for weekend 1, so weekend 2 gets my vote (also falls after payday so I has mo' munnies for silly knick knacks I will want to purchase whilst in the United Kingdom :P)
@edpartridge equally if Pompey by some miacle beat the mighty FC United of Manchester or Brighton and we have a plum home tie against erm.... Southampton... then sorry guys... @indiannie_jones that's soccer talk Annie :-)
@toast Could you please refrain from getting his hopes up like that?
Princess, @eyebrows Weng has been begging me to stay for like a month and each time I have to explain that I can't... and he just insists that he wants to show me around London and that he and Betty have been learning all kinds of new recipes in anticipation of my arrival and I hate to do this to them, but I just can't!
@indiannie_jones you got me... thats exactly what I wanted... i've been found out again *sigh*
you forgot to add that i'll read you a Mr Men book every night before I put you to bed lol
I say, this is all going along jolly smoothly, isn't it?
Next up, then, the potentially less smooth part: wherever shall we go, and whatever shall we do?
I'm not hugely up on London and its attractions, so if it were down to me we'd end up at Selfridges photographing clothes or at an exotic car dealership or something, so... suggestions, peoples?
Somewhere with large benches would be good, but generally anywhere a good 20ish people can fit in and do some photographing and/or shoot the breeze and/or have pubs nearby.
The last thing then, once we've figured where to go and what to do, is what time to get there. I'm up for whatever, in this regard, we could take an entire day, or... whatever. I think getting consensus on this with so many of us involved might be tricky, but if you guys could post up approx when you'd ideally want to arrive/leave, maybe we can get somewhere. Being as brief as "arrive morning, leave afternoon" or "arrive afternoon, leave the next morning after being thrown out the night club" might be useful.
I'd be planning on arriving 8pm-ish Fri 28th and leaving Sun 30th afternoon. I'd love to go down to Trafalgar Square but to be honest most of central London is pretty walkable and most anywhere by tube. I know a couple of good pubs but Londons full of places. We can't really go wrong! (famous last words)...
Oh probably be good to go riverside and maybe Southbank. But really I'm only ever a visitor to London. There's probably loads of amazing places to visit. I mean camera-wise!
Suggest noon kick off.... That shouldn't be too early and will give those of us just outside London time for 1) a lay in and 2) battle the weekend tube closures into the West End :-)..
As for where... anywhere central should be good as plenty to see and alos plenty of boozers should the need arise :-)
@eyebrows not being a local i'm up for an afternoon leading in to a night time shoot? Then staying somewhere overnight and coming back the next day maybe? I'm pretty flexible but if there are a few of us we could make a party of it.
Timings - afternoon start - flexible with leaving.
Where options - - congregating around the 'bench' was an option? So could do a Traf Sq, St James Park, Big Ben type of thing - or just meet at the bench and then could go towards the river - any bit of the southern stretch from Westminster to Tower Bridge would be good - Parliament, London Eye, St Pauls, Millennium Bridge, Tower Bridge etc - good for groups 'cos of the generally large walkways. Would probably be good for after-dark shooting too actually.
I think it depends what we want to shoot.. if we dont have a problem with (and maybe WANT to take) tourists milling around the all the above from Isla is fine. If not, then maybe we want to do something else.
Personally, if we have a few hours, we could start at Tower bridge and walk west past St Dunstans in the east, monument, bank, London Wall, St Pauls, Millenium Bridge then head in towards Covent garden garden area.
Some of us may now have finished our projects, or be on some form of wavering hiatus, but hopefully that won't kill this little meet up. Four Weeks To Go!
Thanks to Isla and Weng for the suggestions, that sort of thing sounds fine to me, so if we adopt that as the broad plan, we should be ok.
There wasn't too much feedback on arrival/departure times after my last update, but some idea of this would be pretty useful. Noon to early after-noon probably fits well for most of us I'd guess, but I'll head up earlier and be about all morning too, at least for Rich so he's not all alone!
So, yeah, four weeks to go. I don't know how comfortable you'll be with a brummie nerd having your mobile number but it'd be useful for me to have them, or y'all to have mine, so we can minimise chances of losing people on the day.
To that end, mail me at ked8q1z4hit35a7u@mailcatch.com and I'll reply from my real address, so we can exchange details without posting anything in public on t'internet.
Also let me know if you can't make it any more, so I don't chase you all over the shop.
And to add to Weng's suggestion ... One New Change in Cheapside has a rather cool roof terrace, so nice views of the Thames and surrounding areas, plus you're very close to St Pauls ...
oops, I lost track of this thread for a while, but if Sat Jan 29th around noon is the definite plan, I should be able to make it, so will make sure I check back here to find out exact time and location...
@eyebrows Ah don't worry about me, I'm bringing my girlfriend and we're making a whole weekend of it with the 365 meet up the pinnacle! Don't worry, (even though she has given me the odd withering look as i pull my camera out in Leeds city centre once again) she's great fun and enjoys looking through the website!
As such I'm trying to get a hold of who's still up for this.
Email me at ked8q1z4hit35a7u@mailcatch.com and I'll reply from my real address, so we can exchange details without posting anything in public on t'internet.
Also let me know if you can't make it any more, so I don't chase you all over the shop, which I'm just about to do
i am up for it in principle ( anything can happen between now and then) will email you...and am open to where go as have already done most of what has been suggested, I look forward to meeting fellow toggers!
@eyebrows well i spoke to him on monday evening and he messed up and got his shifts wrong, he thought it week before 29th. so he's now got to look at getting shifts swap back again, unless you spoke to him in past 48 hrs i guess. he may have sorted out by now
@toast there's about 12 still in it as far as I'm aware - you, annie, cindy, ed, helen, isla, kit, michelle, rich t, ross, simon fear, aaron and yoori. I think. I've got a spreadsheet full of numbers :)
It's getting pretty close so specifying a meet point and a time is probably the last thing to do. Most responses I got about times mentioned afternoon, so I reckon aiming for 1pm/2pm somewhere. I'll read back through the thread and find your post about a good trip route, and suggest that. When I'm less tired
@katiegc24 anyone is invited. From memory its saturday the 29th.. ie NEXT saturday, in london at around 1pm
@eyebrows - its still the 29th right? Anyway, I imagine Steve will determine the time (I imagine he'll do this by just flipping a coin to choose 1pm or 2pm lol) and a meet up location. From my perspective if we're doing the plan that was suggested a while ago, we should maybe start at the tower of london area and work our way west wards.
oh sorry to SPAM but i've got a mate who's interested in joining.. she's not of the 365 variety but I thought it'd be nice to throw around the invite to get some involvement and maybe tempt them into the community
@toast You became mine when you started calling me princess :p
Bring your mate along by all means!
Yeah I'm going to post tonight about time/place specifics, wanted to do some google map/streetview action and find a nice park or something. "meet on this road here" is a bit unsavoury so already have a tab open at tower bridge, ready for some scouting tonight!
Ok folks, think I've found a decent enough place to meet up and kick things off.
Working from the routes Isla and Weng suggested, there's a little grassy area (complete with benches) just North of Tower Bridge and The Tower Of London. It's called Trinity House, as best I can fathom, or is very near a thing called Trinity House. If you give the link below a few seconds to load it should pop a streetview photo up too, so you can get a better idea of the look of the thing.
Suggest we meet there at 1pm (heads won, @toast ;) ) and if you need to arrive earlier/later than this, just hit me up at the below email address to get my number, if you haven't done so already. I'll probably be up there much earlier than that, just to make sure I don't get delayed and cause any issues.
Well as a bit of a cavalier sort @katiegc24 I've driven into central London before, and, well, it's as you might imagine. You can get stuck for ages trying to get anywhere. Most people will be getting trains in, and most coming are Londoners anyway.
If you did want to drive it'd probably be better parking somewhere further north of the river and getting the tube the rest of the way. I'm not sure which'd be cheaper for you as I never use trains so don't have a clue about average fare prices. Still haven't decided how I'll be getting in...
@eyebrows - Train it is then. If I can go, that is. I have a gigantic stack of homework to get through :( but it would be nice to get a photo with some 365ers and Greg.. if nobody minds, that is :P
I will give it some thought and see what happens :)
@azza_l lol ummm well my my fiancee and my friend lucia will be coming along. May be lucky enough to get another work friend along too but none of these girls are the ones you ask me to bring lol. That said if everyone throws in a fiver, I could organise something :P
@toast The phone number thing was started way back with my first update, have had contact from about 11 I think so far; whoever I posted up in my last update basically. So everyone who's got in touch via emailing me has my number, and I've got a few of theirs, not everyone wanted to give them out.
I'll post up another reminder later tonight, maybe do another round of comments on everyone's most recent photo just to be sure...
Hi, everyone! I just wanted to say I'm afraid I shan't be able to make it to the meet-up in London this weekend - thanks to work things, and so on...
However, also thanks to work things, I shall be in London later in the day, on Saturday... I don't want to make this seem too much like an advert, but I am playing at The Cavendish Arms in London with Axel Loughrey on Saturday night...
So, if anyone fancies coming to see some live music after the "official" 365 meet, saying hello, and maybe trying a bit of band photography as well (I know a lot of photographers who tell me that photographing live gigs is great fun!) then you're more than welcome to come along, and I'll look forward to seeing you there!
Of course, if you've got things to rush off to after the photography meeting, that's cool - or if you just decide that you don't like me/the music/Axel's hair/whatever then I understand... I just thought I'd mention it!
@eyebrows I should be able to make it - have an appointment at 1:30 in covent garden that should last an hour or so but can then make my way to wherever you guys are...
Ok folks, think I've found a decent enough place to meet up and kick things off.

I will be there! I've been holding off committing until I knew whether I'd finished all my homework in time. I haven't. But I really need a break, and this is a great excuse - looking forward to meeting you all tomorrow
@eyebrows im not making excuses but i mite need to get my car sorted tomorrow. Ive noticed an oil patch this evening in the car park while out,im pretty sure i spotted one in the week. Gonna see what leaks over nite as will need to get it sorted on sat rather the leave it a week. Be gutted if cant make it. Will keep you posted
@eyebrows couldn't get the to open (at g/friends and she has internet connection problems) so will send my mobile number in a moment using the reply function here..
No damn trains from Brighton today, apparently, which I only found out once I got to the station. So am currently at gatwick waiting to depart. Should still be there in good time

Jan good for anyone?
Depending when, i could be in - not a great one for these things generally (cos i'm a miserable bastard) but might be persuaded.
But seems likely to be when i am away, since i'm in vietnam for 3 weeks end of dec and start of jan.
Plus bear in mind that
>small talk with complete strangers
will probably turn into
>small talk and beer with complete strangers
at some point!
@eyebrows are you enforcing the "you should bring these ppl along for the next meet" for my participation? :)
Ok this is looking solid, we've got a fair few sorts interested, I am this: pleased.
I'll give a couple more days and start suggesting some actual dates and then it'll officially be a go!
Awesome.
Weng is stuck with me pretty much the entire time I'm there, anyway @toast
@edpartridge - Ipswich Town? Who the heck are they?! :P
@scrivna from memory, werent you supposed to organise this one? :)
yes i think i was, but i will begrudgingly let Steve do it, this time.
I am! haha
But I'm not impressed by Lambert's touchline ban... :/
yaaay
Bloody amateurs the lot of you.
@andycoleborn @eyebrows There's something fishy about that Murray fella... @hednod
Blimey! I'm impressed with the turn out; I make that 21 folk if everyone makes it! This is going to have to be some bench... or phone box... I think we're going to need a Tardis, @edpartridge @rich57 !

Oh right, I ought to go now. Toodles.
(I actually say football too but you boys are fun to mess with)
Looking like W2 it is!
Oh and Weng, you and Steve are obviously taking turns with babysitting
No no, don't thank me.. It's just another one of those selfless things I do to make the world a happier place :)
I'm working in London on the evening of the 29th, so I'll be around then anyway - and you can all come to the gig too! haha
But the weekend before that is free, so I could come down to London then as well, if that's when everyone will be about...
Princess, @eyebrows Weng has been begging me to stay for like a month and each time I have to explain that I can't... and he just insists that he wants to show me around London and that he and Betty have been learning all kinds of new recipes in anticipation of my arrival and I hate to do this to them, but I just can't!

S'ok, Weng, I'll just have to come back in the summer ;D
Safe breadbins, safe.
Saturday 29th January it is!

ummm i'm booked for easter so please come before then! switzerland and southern italy baby!
Well @katiegc24 it's Saturday 29th Jan, anyone can come, and everyone's invited! ;)
But maybe for my birthday then? I expect you both @eyebrows *smacks* to amuse me for the duration of my stay! :D
@eyebrows - its still the 29th right? Anyway, I imagine Steve will determine the time (I imagine he'll do this by just flipping a coin to choose 1pm or 2pm lol) and a meet up location. They don't have to turn up in their pants of course. That would not doubt put them off coming at all.

@toast I'm heading to PayPal now...
I'm in!
@eyebrows do you want to get everyone's phone numbers and send out yours so we have someone to call in case we get lost / are late etc?
I'll post up another reminder later tonight, maybe do another round of comments on everyone's most recent photo just to be sure...

Can't make it I'm afraid, got stuff to do. Have fun guys, look forward to your photos!

For all those drop outs, c'mon stop messin about, it's 1 day, i know it's scary meeting strangers but you'll be fine, stop making excuses.
If anyone wants a lift from ipswich way (A12) we'll be driving down and getting the tube
