We are moving to a Mac platform at home and was wondering what peoples opinions are in relation to the Aperature 3 software.

A friend of mine was using it and bought Lightroom a few days ago. His response was along the lines of, "Where have you been all my life?!"

That pretty much sums it up, I reckon.

Some one gave me Aperture 2 which was like giving the keys to the Ferrari to a 2 year old. Once you learn what it can do, it is an awesome organizing tool. For me, a hobby photographer & not very tech oriented it had a very steep learning curve. Still does a year later! I do use it for all my photos but I would need to put a lot more time into it to really use all it has to offer.

I've been using the Aperture trial and it's a nice program, but I tried Adobe's lightroom and absolutely love it. Just have to make the space in my budget to buy it. They both have 30-day trials, give them a test drive.

@bradsworld what is it about lightroom that you love? is it the organizational aspect, or the editing? i have aperture, but have NO CLUE how to use it, so it is basically just holding my photos in albums/folders, etc. i still use picnik for editing. i want to be able to edit and organize all in one program--but want something that's idiot-friendly too! (:

I have both and agree with Jinx, Lightroom has much more capabilities than Aperture.

@bcurrie

My two cents - It's been a little while, but I seem to recall that the slider-based controls are very user friendly. I love the side-by-side comparisons of before and after shots, but the thing I loved the most about it was noise reduction. Up until about a week ago I was using the iPhone 3G exclusively for my project, and one of the weaknesses of that phone is its performance in low light. In low light it fills in the low-lit and black areas with colors besides black, making for a messy looking photo. The color noise reduction slider in Lightroom pulls that color noise right out of there like magic. Overall the program felt more intuitive to me, too.I can get a lot of color noise out with Aperture, but it's a lot more detail work. You'll find an abundance of tutorials for both systems on YouTube.

I've recently upgraded to the iPhone 4 and the camera is much better...still checking it out.

I use Aperture and find it to be an excellent workflow program for managing lots of photos. It is kinda like iPhoto on steroids. Agree with the suggestion of trying the 30 day trial.
