Photoshop Elements 9 compared to CS5 extended...anyone?

January 9th, 2011
Hi to all my 365 Friends....

My mother and I are going to do a Poetry book this year and my job is to be over all the pictures in this book.
We have purchased the CS5 extended version of Photoshop and have not opened it just yet until we know that this is the best fit for what we are about to embark upon. However, our thinking is that if CS5 Extended has everything and more than the Elements 9 then maybe we should just use the CS5 extended version....
I would love to hear anyone's input or advice, who is familiar with these two versions of Photoshop...in helping me make my decision.
I am forever grateful for the friendships and insight I could get from you all!

Thank you so very much,
Your 365 friend....Dannabunny

if you are using it primarily for photo editing then i would say go for photoshop elements. it will do everything you need it to do and more. i have used both programs and use elements for all my photo retouching.

I think you are a non-professional graphic designer and as such I would save your money and go with Photoshop Elements. It has sufficient of the features of Photoshop that you are ever likely to need.

Here's a quick checklist Elements doens't have :

* CMYK and LAB color modes
* Some of the tools and features that work with high-bit (16-bit and 32-bit) images
* Channels Palette
* Recording custom Actions (for batch processing)
* Adjustments: Color Balance, Match Color
* Layer Comps, and Quick Mask mode
* Smart Objects, Smart Guides
* Lens Blur Filter
* Vanishing Point Tool
* Puppet Warp
* Pen tool and paths palette
* Mixer brush and bristle tips painting tools
* Some adjustment layers (curves, color balance, selective color, channel mixer, vibrance)
* Editing History Log
* Text on a path, advanced text formatting
* Advanced Layer Style manipulation
* Advanced Color Management
* Advanced Web features (rollovers, slicing)
* Customizable tool presets, keyboard shortcuts, and menus

Plus, in the features and tools that are shared, Photoshop usually offers more advanced options for fine tuning and control.

However some features that are not natively supported in Photoshop Elements, can be simulated through other tools in Elements, and some are actually there, but hidden and only accessible through actions created in the full version of Photoshop. Some generous folks who have access to both Photoshop and Elements have created add-ons and tools that will allow Elements to use some of these features.

Advice culled from various sources, hope this helps.

I use Elements 9 and love it...however, if I had had the money to burn, I would have done CS5. That said you also need to look at what you need the program to do and how intensively you will be using it. It won't do you any good to get CS5 if all you are going to do is a color correction and crop (or simple basic auto corrections), you know what I mean? :) Happy shopping girl. Did you also decide on a camera too?

Are you do the 'publishing' in adobe too? IF so I think CS5 is smarter... you can blend photos and text together, but if you are only taking the photos... elements is lots... i always say... if you don't know why you need CSx you are fine with elements.

I so appreciate all of you guys input! However, I will say my mother has been able to get both of these softwares for 199.00....so price is not really an issue!
I am very interested in the out of bounds effects and If I can get the CS5 that has everything then I'm kind of leaning that way!
But, I am taking in consideration everything you guys have told me!
Keep you updated! Thanks for your time and input!

For that price keep it! You'd be saving only 100 to do Elements (which has that out of bounds thing but I have yet to figure it out)....

I would recommend getting yourself a tutorial book to step you through all the features and effects. :)

Good luck!
