Does anyone have any suggestions/comments/preferences for indoor lighting? I'm considering purchasing a little something to get some extra light on my indoor subjects. As an amature, I don't want to pour all kinds of money in to something I will never use.
Currently I am using existing lighting, mostly compact fluorescent, and the on camera flash on my D50. Basicly doing macro photography, with some portraits.
I use an SB-600 speedlight with my D90 and D60. It helps quite a bit. I usually use TTL setting, so I've got a long way to go to really get the most use out of it.
I'll give the same recommendation I got when I first started shooting photography: get a Nikon SB-80DX. These are older strobes, but they still function just as well as the newer and much more expensive SB-800.
With the SB-80DX, you can set it to automatic mode or, if you are comfortable with it, manual mode. It has a super simple user interface on the back that allows you tons of control options, something you won't get with cheaper strobes from Walmart or Best Buy. It also has a feature that will allow you to fire it remotely by using your on-board flash: it can detect when another flash fires, and then fires itself.
I don't work with strobes all that often, but I actually chose to buy 4 SB-80DXs over anything Nikon sells. They run about $150 each, used, from either local camera shops or eBay.
I just use the really simple single yellow builders lights, if you know which i mean? You have to be careful though because they get hot! They are alot cheaper than proper lights too, and do the same thing.
i just got my speedlite yesterday... and i just wanna ask y'all
what's TTL, M (well i know it's manual... how does it work? what's the diff of M and TTL) and the S1 and S2 (which with what i've heard, they're SLAVE MODES..)
and how can i use the speedlite as another source of light without attaching it to my camera.. i have my strobe which has, of course, a trigger.. but i'm not sure if it's an IR TRIGGER.. my friend told me it has to be IR for me to use the speedlite without attaching it on my camera.. is there any way on my D5000, a setting perhaps, to make this work?
I AM REALLY SORRY ABOUT THE LONG QUESTION!!!! but i think people here on 365 can answer my question more than those people i know... THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! ^___^
I read in a book about studio lights that are not flashes or strobes: fluorescent bulbs called Spiderlites. They remain on, so the studio situation becomes easier to work with.
Not that I mind spending money on stuff (travel, clothes, computer / camera toys!), but I feel hesitant about spending so much on something I'm not sure I would use more than a few times. So I checked out rental possibilities; at the nearby camera/photo store, they have a comprehensive rental program for very reasonable prices. I may try renting lights.

I highly recommend getting at least one.

something like this. Just google portable site lights, and you can find lots of places selling them very cheaply!
