Built In Flash Issue...

January 13th, 2011
The built in flash-which I rarely use-won't pop up. Sometimes I can turn off the camera and turn it back on and it will pop up. Any solutions to fix it, aside from sending it in or taking it in somewhere and being without it for X amount of time?

Honestly, I detest the built in flash, and would like if there were no other options so I could get a speedlight :) So in the event that my only option is to get an external flash... Which would you recommend?

ETA: It is a Canon T1i, if that matters.

Does it not have a button beside the flash to pop it up?

@cupcakesin Yes, i press that button but it won't come up. It makes the noise like it wants to pop up but I am guessing some release or something in the mechanism is broken.

That just stinks. Maybe look around for a repair place, I know in the mall near us we have a camera repair store and sometimes the repairs are done in an hour or two--might be worth looking into! Sorry it's not working-maybe someone will have a good idea!

Is it still under warranty from Canon?

I think I have the t1i - that's the 500D right? Some settings don't allow you to choose to turn the flash on (like macro, portrait, landscape and sport), stick it on CA and you should be able to do so. Or go completely manual. :D

I've heard that the microswitch in the flash hot shoe that detects if there's an external flash installed can sometimes get stuck. E.g. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=35199685

@mizikei It is on manual. When I press the button to make the flash open, it won't, and gives me an error telling me it can't open.

Ah, in that case, I'd take it to a repair place. Have you had it long?

@mizikei About a year.

@paulv That's weird. I should check to see if that is the issue. I have never used an external flash though so not sure why it would think that.

the button could have been jammed in the bag or else where... is the hotshoe cover in place?
January 14th, 2011
@icywarm I don't know what a hotshoe cover is TBH....

I wouldnt bother getting it fixed until you sell it, I'd buy a speedlight as you get better flash results from being able to bounce the flash off the room.

I'd go no less than the 430EX...but if funds are tight go the 270EX it doesnt have any special options but you can tilt it so it bounces
