I was visited the Magical Wizarding of Harry Potter in December with my kids. It was shoulder to shoulder and feet shuffleing the entire time. Freaked me out. Can not imagine going to worlk like that everyday.
@rich57 Haha! We used the trains a fair bit when we were in tokyo we always avoided peak hour, but one afternoon we'd gotten a little lost and end ended up on one of those very very packed trains... and yes the locals are very good at falling asleep anywhere and any time!!!
I guess its become a part of life for them, they wouldnt really think any different... such a dedicated society they'll do what it takes to get to work on time!
Scary stuff - you couldn't do that on the new Victoria Line trains - you just have to breathe on the doors and thre trains stall. Quite freaky those guys wearing masks.
Having been on the Tokyo underground I can believe it. But I have only seen such crowding rarely, most of the time its no worse than London underground or the Paris metro.
@tomu3 Don't let it put you off, its a wonderful country.
Interesting series of pictures but as others have said, London Underground can be just as bad at times.
I used to commute into the heart of the city of London (for about 7 years between 1992 and 1999) and some lines were a real crush in the rush hour. Maybe not to the extent they need people to push you into the carriages as they do in Japan, but pretty sardine like. All part of the fun tough! :)
They actually have people who work there that PUSH you into the trains to fill it up. Even have women only cars since there's a lot of perverts going to take advantage of such a closed space.
I'm from NYC - did you see this video? It's gone viral...haha
