Missed shots

January 22nd, 2011
The more pictures I take, the more I view life in terms of what would make a good shot, and often I end up kicking myself for not capturing what would seem to be the perfect photo opportunity. For example, this morning I saw a man snowblowing his driveway, and the snow was flying in an arc ten feet in the air. The shot would have been great, but bad weather and the fact that I had my puppy in the car with me prevented me from stopping to shoot the image, and now I really wish I could have.

Does anyone else find themselves lamenting the shots that got away?

Most certainly, all the time. I'm just like, aaw, I wish I didn't have to be somewhere because this and that is so pretty, or the sunset is just so spectacular today. And in gym class, I think, woah, that would have been a great shot. And I'm now reconsidering participating in some high school activities (like Powder Puff football) because I want to take pictures of it.

yeah, i do. that's why i keep a camera with me almost all the time!
January 22nd, 2011
I always have my camera with my, but at times it is not always safe (or legal) to capture the things that speak to me. The other day I was passing through a really unsafe construction site, and I saw something I desperately wanted to shoot, but I knew I just couldn't. Oh well, there is always tomorrow, right.

I guess it helps push me to look for more good shots in the ordinary everyday things, right?

Nod
Yes I do, many many times actually. But then I say to myself ...there will be other opportunities to shoot "perfect moments" again :)

I can't take a camera to work and rather than leave it in the car in the heat all day I leave it at home - guess when I see all those great, unmissable shots........yep, on the way to and from work!
January 22nd, 2011
Absolutely! I keep my camera with me all the time but sometimes circumstance keeps me from getting a shot! Like no safe place to pull over, or I am needed somewhere at a certain time! We all obsess over the shot that got away!
January 22nd, 2011
oh yeah I'm still cursing the one where I walked past an estate agents office when we had really deep snow and the only guy working there was leaning on the wall outside as he smoked a cigarette dressed in a pink pringle sweater and wearing bright red wellies. I had my camera but just felt too obvious to stop and snap him.

I'm constantly bemoaning missed shots. I do have a camera with me all the time but it's not always safe or legal, as someone else mentioned, to stop. At least I'm beginning to overcome my 'oh no, what would people think?' attitude which often stopped me in the past.

@jools LOL! Julia I am pretty sure most people think I am completely bonkers!! I stop and take crazy shots. Today at the supermarket I took a shot of this big ugly fish in the ice case. Normally they just lay them in rows but today they had a large one sitting like it was swimming in there with it's big mouth open and I just HAD to snap a shot! LOL!
January 22nd, 2011
I missed a perfect one yesterday as I couldn't stop. 4 horses in silhouette with a background of a dramatic grey sky with shafts of sunlight beaming down on them...........with nowhere to stop, it would have made a wonderful picture - such is life!

I do it all the time. And sometimes if it is a cool building or some interesting graffiti or something, I will have my husband take me driving in the car and I will stop to shoot later and it just never looks as good as it does the first time around.

And then when I do have my camera, I can't find anything good to shoot lol. Tis life I suppose.

It's the nature of the beast, it's unavoidable, it's Murphy's Law....

I constantly think of concepts, themes, all kinds of things, and I see all kinds of photographs everywhere I go, my children...everyday I could fill a album with photographs..so I constantly regret not taking photographs, then I stress too much about the ones I do sometimes.

That happened with me today... I took a trip to visit a friend alittle bit away (20 min) from where I live... They have some great places to shoot and I wished that I brought my camera.... I still got a shot that I am proud of but i do regret that I didn't have it. It was georgeous day today where I live. I hope that maybe someday I can go back and get some shots there as I am going to be leaving to go back to school.

Yes! I've missed so many perfect shots..Sometimes due to my camera (or my inexperience....I'm still getting the hang of my new camera). But I also find that shots I didn't think would turn out, actually came out great! And I've found that many new "perfect" opportunities will come along, you've just gotta find them and be ready! :)

Yes, it must be pretty common--lamenting the shot that got away from us. Missed opportunities make me crazy. A couple weeks ago, out at the lake, I actually spotted a Bald Eagle in a tree, but it was very far away. I got a few shots, but even at 200mm range with my zoom lens, it was far away. My husband and I hurried out to the area, but the eagle was gone. He didn't believe it WAS an eagle....LOL....though, admittedly, it's a rare thing to see in these parts. So, when I got home and cropped the heck out of the pic, it was my proof--it had been an eagle. I'm still dealing with that....&=)

ALL. THE. TIME. While this project has made me take my camera more often than not, there are times I don't. The moon was fabulous the other morning and something told me to grab it, but the kids were ...well...lets just say I needed to go and was not about to go back in the house for anything~oh they were crabby.
But yeah, i know what you mean. It just helps us to be better prepared for 'the next time'.

yes, it happens a lot to me, too. i take my camera with me all the time and although i am quick to recognize a potential good shoot, alas, i am too slow to take my camera out, turn it on and shoot.

most times i'd say, "i should take a picture of that" and before i could do anything the missed opportunity becomes just that: missed opportunity.

but you know what, tiffany, in everything in life, i always believe that if something's not meant to be, then it's not going to happen. but there will be other days and other better opportunities.

cheers!

always! now i keep a small digital in my handbag at all times.
January 22nd, 2011
yup, just today people were risking thier lives to cross over to a small island where i live, wading in chest high water, with strong currents, with a child on dads shoulders...... did they not see the warnings pasted all over the place or did the fact that two men lost there lives there a couple of weeks back doing exactly that,.
I really wish i had the shot then you could have seen how treacherous this crossing really is,
yup we all miss em.

I always take my camera but still miss those perfect shots. This morning I was taking pics of a young surfer riding the waves on his board. I took a few good ones, put the camera down, only to watch him then do a magnificent backflip off his board at the end of his ride! Curses! I have a catalogue of these; it's like those fishing stories of 'the one that got away'.

I actually had a moment like that today. We had lots of snow this morning but in the afternoon the sun came out. When the sun started going down the sky was beautiful... the clouds were white, dark gray and pink... the sun was shining and there were patches of blue sky. The snow on the trees made it look magical. I wish I could have gone out and got that shot but I was at work and it was very busy :/
January 22nd, 2011
all the time. have carried a little P&S with me for years, got an even smaller and lighter one for xmas. Still miss shots sometimes though.
January 22nd, 2011
Oh I do!!! I have entire vacations that I can look back on and want a complete do over! Thailand and Singapore immediately come to mind. I was so busy trying to please everyone else that I let my desire to stop and take pictures take a back seat. I am still kicking myself and Thailand was 10 years ago. My next big trip will definitely be planned to allow for plenty of photo time!!!
January 22nd, 2011
Always. I drive a semi and am always seeing things that would make a good photo. Problem is, I can't always stop and take the shot. I have, however, been known to take a quick shot while driving!

You just have to go on and not think about the photos you might have missed.

I know what you mean! I didn't bring my camera in my backpack and we ended going to a hospital.... damn

The day before; walked past this building being demo'd the next day its all over the local/national newspaper

January 22nd, 2011
I'm going to start taking my p&s everywhere I go as I'm constantly missing shots
January 22nd, 2011
Always, but that is what makes catching that one hundreth of a second so worthwhile when you do catch it.
January 22nd, 2011
All the time XD I have a P&S but the batteries for it have such a short lifespan so it always dies just at the point I want to take a photo! That and I'm too used to my DSLR and it annoys me when my P&S won't take what I want it too (hence why if my friend has her DSLR at college I borrow it XD)
