Phoenix Photos?

January 24th, 2011
Hey there Phoenix-dwellers. I am going to be visiting your city in the first week of March, and I don't know anything about Phoenix besides the Cactus League and the Coyotes. Still planning out the trip, and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for great places to go to take photos. Is the first week of March too early for wild-flowers? Where can a Canadian go and see some really impressive cacti? There may also be a day-trip out to Yuma; are there any must-sees for a photographer out that way? Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

I don't live in Phoenix but travel there at least 3-4 times a year to see family and it's one of my favorite places to photograph... There is an easy hour-2 hour hike up in the Phoenix mountains (Squaw Peak) that give a great view of the city and surrounding landscape, and If you want more of a challenge you can hike Camelback mountain (more of a day hike with photo taking) same landscape from a different view. March is an awesome time to visit and there are a ton of things in bloom... especially if it's rained recently. Desert flowers are awesome and really fun to photograph! Hope you have a great trip!

@aikimomm just posted a shot from the Desert Botanical Garden. You may want to contact her as she might have some good ideas for you!

As another Canadian, who lived in Phoenix for 2 years, I would suggest a day trip up to Sedona. The colors up there are great! Tombstone could also be an interesting place for pictures. Superstition mountain near Apache junction is nice. As is Queen Valley. Have a great trip, and bring back lots of shots!

the Botanical Garden is a great place to see all of the amazing cacti and dare i say flowers?? :) lol. also, I agree Sedona is an amazing place, worth the drive. I'm not sure where you are staying (downtown?) I live in the East Valley, so I know places out this way, but not sure if it would be too far for you. I like to hike in Usery Park and love the Saguaro lake/Canyon lake area.

Thanks for the suggestions! Not only good for pictures, but also things to do. I didn't realize that there were mountains right in the city. My boyfriend is excited about going to watch baseball and hockey, but now I have something to be excited about too.
