My daughter came over the other day and asked me to set up an account at our pharmacy where she works as a pharmacist and so I can send photos I take of her kids and their cousins there for printing and she can pick them up. She rarely takes photos herself and wants print copies.
So, do you print? If so, where do you print and what sizes do you print in? Do you print just general photos or just special ones? Do you use different printing sources depending on what you're printing? In the past I have tried to print photos taken with my old point and shoot and was so disappointed in the photos, I stopped.
I print a book every year, and they aren't as great as on the computer, but it's a nice keepsake. Those are mostly family-pictures.
And I did print a bunch of them for myself, all of them the same size, to look at them and learn.
For this project I'm not sure what to do. I want to make a book of them, but they must be decent sized and that will cost a fortune... So I think I'll make a book with just the highlights, but I'm not sure jet.
I print a few, but only ones I want to put in frames or on the wall. I still have a billion photos in envelopes in the attic - they never get looked at. We display good photos on the TV (56" screen) via Apple TV.
I print out ones I really really love. Or send family members shots of my son that they dont get to see.
The only thing with printing in like a pharmacy type place is that I have printed out things there before and they asked me for the copy right release or permission from the photographer to print their work. Which I guess is good that they check but I was the photographer, I was giving them permission to print them but they didn't believe me. Just be careful of that, and maybe print out a release for her.
@nanascraps I stopped printing once my Mom (in her 80s!) finally decided images looked better on her screen. Recently though I've been asked for prints. I don't want to hijack your thread, so I'll start a new one about what services folks use, if they don't print themselves. Thanks for the unintended nudge!
i used to print in the days before fb and send copies to family, now i put them on fb as most of my family are on there so they can see my pics, those that aren't can take and print their own unless they ask nicely ;)
Part of my question was what services others use to print, if they do. That seems to be an issue - I've hated whatever I've gotten back from a local pharmacy or Wal-Mart and not sure if it's because I'm doing something wrong.
@nanascraps Yes, for the local shops, their settings are often so automated that if your images going in aren't just right, the colors and sharpness can be thrown way off. Back in film days, it was really disappointing and expensive to get back really bad prints. I am fortunate that I have a couple of local shops that do fine art and commercial printing, but I know many do not have the luxury.
@nanascraps No, their printing is kind of terrible, I agree with that. I personally prefer using online services-a lot of people I know use Shutterfly.
I'm certainly not a pro, so I just print enlargements to hang on the wall, and I really am bad about printing lately for photobooks. I use Costco. They allow you to upload quickly (they reduce the pic, but still say it's good enough quality for an 8 x 10) or you can use the bigger uploader for larger pics if you are going for good detail or very large prints. I've done both and never been dissapointed. I also love that you can do everything online and then just go pick them up, or have them mailed to you. You do have to be a memeber though.
I am so new to digital photography. I am still trying to figure this out. I have printed out a few photos. I usually use my ink jet printer, but do use my photo printer, when I am not so lazy. I do plan to take four in soon to print and frame for birthday gifts for two people. I do not know where I will go to have these printed. Our local Wal-Mart does a good job. Walgreens Pharmacy also prints. I am wondering if one of the print shops or office supply stores in my town do this. I will come back to this discussion and the new one to see what people are doing.
I print all the time but then a lot of my scenic shots are brought by people ... Its bizzare because I print for customers and very rarely print for myself
@nanascraps - Barbara I actually use facebook to get the business and use a place like Ebay that is New Zealand specific. I take my photos into a local business here that give me a great deal on prices and I am more than satisfied with their results. I print from 6x4 all the way up... I also do canvas and have even done some mugs for people
@nanascraps
I print my own and i use an Epson Printer, the thing is that I can use Epson or Canon paper, and they are great but if i use HP paper they are awful. A friend of mine printed the same shot in 6 different places and 1 online, and the results were amazing, in that the difference in colour was so different. So i would suggest do the same and when you find one you like stick with it. The only ones i print outside are the b/w, and only one place i have found in my home town has the best , all othrs had a green tinge. Hope this helps.

Rose - do you use an online service or something local to you? What sizes do you print in?
