A little bit of both. Some days I want to "think outside of the box" and try something new, some I want to really TRY, and others I want to just take a picture that represents my day. I just got started so it will be fun to see how that changes over time.
i'd have to say a little of column a and a little of column b.....i'd like to see if i can actually complete the challenge of taking a picture a day, and also for learning more about photography and improve my shots
its a 3 fold thing for me I like to push myself to create an image and I find that is easier when I feel like I am doing it not just for myself but for an audience if you like so first and foremost is for general improvement and sharpening of my style secondly I have always been a bit of an entertainer and I think its nice if I can show a bit of my work to others and thirdly its always nice to have a decent folio of some of my best work on hand :) and thats pretty much why in a nutshell
I want to get better at capturing the moments in time that I see everyday. Secondly, to record what I see, whatever it may be, to have for the future. Time flies by, but looking back for a number of reasons is fun.
@bjboelke36 All of the above! :) My life has been so busy that my camera took to the sidelines and I didn't even use it for long periods of time. My New Years resolution was to dust it off and start using it - this project allows me to bring photography back into my daily life.
Hopefully I'll improve and have a great year of photos to look back on!
I came here at first to have some accountability to start creating again, without the rules and strict purpose making 'art' had become for me. A friend began posting here, and I felt it would be a good way to keep on task to shoot daily, making quick photographic sketches of what inspired me or was beautiful everyday. Now that I'm here, I can't get enough of wanting to see other cultures, other visions, other lives, and others' interpretations of everything in their own lives!
I'm all about finding lovely captures/favorites that speak to me, that help make my days brighter or make my creative self joyful with appreciation of the beauty in the world and the many people who are willing to seek it.
I started my 365 in hopes of becoming more vulnerable as a photographer. Exploring myself, my thoughts, etc. And I'm very pleased with the direction I'm heading.
I think I'm just documenting my day. Plus I get to make some friends along the way. I want to get a better digital camera like a Nikon or something. I have just a simple vivitar. I love seeing different images from across the world. I've been able to do it so far. I accidently put my first picture up as if I took it January 1at instead of changin the date to the 15th. Oh well minor detail. I want to see how creative I can get. lol
@bjboelke36 I love finding a good shot, even though I don't know a single thing about cameras (I just have a plain point-and-shoot with a few nifty manual bells and whistles I know how to use well) that's why I joined. I can't let myself compare myself to what is on here though cause some stuff is just breathtakingly way over my scope of ability.
Now it's become an outlet of sorts, to see if I'm bored enough to go with what Daily Shoot on twitter recommends, to express how I'm feeling that day, or if I'm going about my day and see an opportunity. I want to finish cause I never finish anything, I always get bored with things and give up on them. This one I want to finish, if I do, I'll reward myself with a better camera with the knowledge I've gained the first year... maybe. I love my old old camera. LOL
Can't lie though, the attention is reallllly nice....
I received a nice, new camera as a Christmas gift. Just about the same time I heard about this project and thought it would be neat to journal a year of my grandkids...but once I got here and saw all the talent, my goals changed a little. I still want to journal a year - but I want to do it better. :)
To become a better photographer. I also am addicted to photographing my son so this challenge is to help me take photos apart from him all the time! Haha.
I started the project so I could have fun shooting pictures and improve my photography skills. I alternate between posting shots which depict my daily life (sometimes in a journal type format) and those that depict my photography growth (or experiments).
As a stay at home Mum to 2 preschoolers I found that most of my time was taken up meeting their needs. Doing this project makes me devote a little bit of time everyday just for me. Expanding my skills and challenging my creativity is a bonus.
I joined primarily to take a 365 day pictorial of my life - like a visual diary. That is still my aim but if I can learn how to take those photos better than its an added plus for me. I was unaware of what a great "club" it is and now besides taking my daily shot I'm loving looking at the work of others and meeting new friends.
I like to look at other people's work, and admire the beauty that they see and capture. I am also hoping to learn more about photography and about myself in the process. I am already learning, and look forward to more of it!!!
It seems to be a mix of things. One way is to document a year. Another is to learn more about photography and improve my pictures. It's also something for me to focus on, and a challenge I really want to keep up with.
Just documenting my day to day life really, I am a scrap booker and ALWAYS have my camera in my handbag. It's just a little lummox point and shoot and I take heaps of photos . So it is good to be able to do something with the day to day one of shots I see something my instant reaction is take a photo ! So although I make good use of multiple photos of special events in my albums it will be nice to look back on in a year and recall what happening and what I saw, did, or experienced in 2011.My photos are not in anyway professional just basic everyday shots of a midle aged wife, mum, daughter, aunt, sister and friend .Hope they are not too boring for others on the project THX Janet
Learn to take better pictures, mainly. I do try to put in a 'personal' shot in every now and then so that I can look back through the pictures and remember what happened that week.
my 2011 is all about being more positive, we had a shocking 2010 and I think by the end a lot had to do with our mind set, it was a vicious circle and something I don't want to replay ever again
Having to take a photo, ii feel that i am generally going to opt for the more positive beauty in something rather then the blah moment i may be feeling; which in turn will help me see the better part of what may be a bad day..
i also feel that a few bad things can make an entire year seem crap, so having photographic proof of the fun, better times we had will help me to really step back and say "hey you know what, its not that bad!"..
Id love to be a fantastic photographer, but i also know i don't have the time or dedication at this point in my life to pour into my photos. For me, if i can learn a thing or two over the year fantastic! but primarily it's all about a photo a day from my life, so i can look back and say "what a great year"..
Oh and it's on my bucket list to actually complete a 365 :D
mine is to try and improve my skills as a photographer and to prove to my husband that buying my dslr wasn't a waste of money,it is also a way of doing something for me and to make me see what else is around me other than my home and kids
Well I used to be into photography but after opening my sweet shop have found my spare time to be limited and the camera would only come out for holidays and birthdays etc.
Doing 365 will hopefully help me to improve my skills while making me think about everyday sights and items in a new and creative way. It also a great community too!
When I originally joined I just wanted to document my daily life, I thought it was a neat idea. But then naturally seeing everyone's GORGEOUS pictures it made me want to get better too :) I have always loved photography but I love it even more now.
To learn how to use my camera
To catalogue and remember what will be a very different year for us
To capture some of the beautiful scenery of our new area
To learn how to process
To learn about photography rather than just taking snapshots
Something for me
Something for us (as hubby jumped on in doing it too)
And I didn't know it till I joined but.....
To be inspired by and in awe of others
@bjboelke36 i love to share my passion for wild and nature here at 365days project, and i get inspired how talented, creative and beautiful pictures seen here. too.the lovely thoughts, reflection.or just the tittle on day by day..how so unique individual creative mind and the passion of sharing is so amazing and beautiful!:) Kampei to us all here!:)
For me, it was about learning from others to become a better photographer. Also, I wanted to build up a portfolio of work and this seemed like the best way to stay on track and keep motivated with this goal. Finally, I thought it was a good way (outside of the usual social-networks) to get to know other people with a similar interest.
I want to learn to get better at photography and have fun while I'm at it. New things crop up all the time and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I've had some great advice from fellow 365rs too and great friends who have helped me out in times of struggle. I'm so glad I joined.
For me, it's a way to photo journal my year and to become a better photographer. I have been surprised at how inspiring and helpful it has been in the process. I love the community support and love seeing everyone's photos.
I'm so inspired by the talented people on this site. I've taken a few classes and I read a lot of photography books. This is an opportunity to practice and improve my skills and it's a creative challenge for me. Can I come up with a different idea everyday? I learn something everyday. Thank you all for being here.
I decided to do this after watching a friend do it last year. I hoped that by dedicating time each day to taking photos I would:
- improve my photography skills
- have a bit of time each day to be creative
- to start noticing beauty in day to day life that I would normally miss
- to have a project to look back on at the end of the year which I can be proud of
What I didn't expect was to find a community of such friendly, helpful and inspiring people!
I've always been a fan of the saying "If you don't use it, you loose it" and I find this to be so true with photography. Since completing my first 365 and taking a break I find that the next time I pick up my camera, some times weeks later, that it takes me just a second to get use to it again. I can only imagine what would happen if I didn't shoot for a month or longer. 365 helped document my days but also gave me a reason to force myself to push my creativity. It also produced lots of happy mistakes that I learned from and plenty of bad mistakes too haha
Not sure that I will do another 365 any time soon but I do plan on doing a creative project once a week to help keep me sharp, push the envelope just a little more and I think its important to have goals, even if they are smaller ones.
for me i saw it as a challenge.... My husband said i would never stick at it so i have to prove him wrong for starters lol! Also i wanted a bit of critique on my photos = i have never had any constructive critism from my dh or family/friends before now so its nice to know what i am doing right or wrong! I love learning new techniques and getting ideas from here i have become quite addicted!
It was @flamez and @coolgirlsar that got Me into or should I say addicted to 365!
I wasn't going to take part, I thought "I'd never manage it" but then I thought "Why not its something for Me and something I enjoy and at the end of the day if I miss a day then its no big deal" My Children set Me a challenge to do 365 Days without a Photo of them, thats going to be so hard as I am always Photographing them, Im mainly picking an object thats around the house and Photographing it in an abstract way, There are so many ideas I would love to try out but I rarely get to take the Photo before 10pm most of the time so Im limited to what I can do before I nod off LOL
I originally decided to do the project because I was bored, actually, and googling photography projects. This one caught my eye, and I said, "I'm going to do that in 2011." So here I am. I suppose my goal is to get better, both through the experience of taking my photos and by learning from others.
I take pictures frequently because I keep a photoblog of my daily life. 365 Project is a convenient site to organize the pictures without my ramblings and showcase the photos more.
I've always wanted to start getting into photography as a hobby. I noticed a couple of friends were doing this project and thought it would be a nice way to get into taking more photos. Now if I could find the time to take and post a photo everyday....
Honestly, I just love taking pictures and want to get better. This gives me a reason to do it MORE than I already do. And I am constantly competing with myself to get better and better.
I've always loved photography but up until now barely used a camera. I did have one, but usually forgot to take it anywhere. 365 meant I had to be more disciplined. So I started to get into taking photos regularly and then to continuously improve. It is also great having other people sharing the process. bouncing ideas and experiences is a useful as well as a fun association. Having a brilliant time.
My 365 started over on facebook... it was my 365 days of happiness... i needed to inject some positiveness into my life... A friend also doing 365 photos joined here and the rest is history!!
Since being here my project has evolved from 365 days of happiness... because rather than being just my happy photos its also me taking the photos that makes me happy... hence playing around with bokeh etc, thats my happy place, my way to escape the struggles of 2 raging little boys!! So people may not see a happy photo a that i've been happy to take... iykwim!!
I've been inspired by so many people on here... love this place. :)
I have had a really rough 2 or 3 years (longer really) with family around me being diagnosed with cancer (7 including my own daughter 2 weeks before giving birth), hubby falling off a motorbike, mum with dementia, etc. that by the end of 2010 I was a bit of a wreck! I have a strong faith in Jesus and know that with His help all things will be OK. Not necessarily perfect, but OK. So part of getting back on track for me is doing 365. It helps me focus on the positive and quirky side of my life. I am using it as a personal photo journal of 2011 so that when I look back I can see how far God has brought me through and have some really good memories.
I am not a photographer, but have learned so much from this site in how to frame photos etc and seeing what others are doing has inspired me to be more creative! I am also now quite interested in photography. I may have to get a camera! I am currently using my phone only!
My purpose Is to record my year, become more observant of my surroundings and learn from the many, many, many creative souls on this site. Thanks for inspiring me!
I have no real goal in life, but since I discovered this site, the hidden photograpy lover-side of me awakened, like some spark happened inside, and I`m just sticking with it,hopefully to evolve.
My rule no.1 is is NEVER use fillers, allwas post the photo taken from THAT day, and,as I want to obey these rules,I get more or less forced to become better.
I`m here to document each day of my life through a photo,AND become better at it,as I go along.
If I wouldn`t follow the "rules",I think I would quit, sell my camera and find something else that I like, untill I get bored and start something else...etc. Like I`ve been doing my whole life, never finishing anything.
So I guess I can say I love this great community ,it`s a life-changer,it`s slowly motivating me to do/learn new things.
I started Project365 this year because I really want to delve deeply into photography. It is consistently bettering my skills. I also think it is an absolute benefit being able to go back and see my day-to-day life. :)
@spaceman I agree completely. I will NOT do a filler. I think I would rather take a shitty picture in my house somewhere than forfeit this project!!
I saw a friend doing it and it looked like a good creative outlet/exercise. It has made me see beauty everywhere - angles, light, textures, emotions, etc. that I would have missed if stuck in my own thoughts. For that, I am most grateful. Being in such a supportive community has been the best benefit of 365. This year has been rocky so reading others post and seeing their pictures has been THE needed remedy for not focusing on the trials of unemployment, breakups, family drama, etc. :)
I love to keep this as a kind of diary - it does not work like that all the time, but still I love that idea. I do look things differently now (I just started my second year) and take much more photos and different photos so I guess it is about learning too. But I am not aming to be anything special, photography is still only a hobby for me.
When I started this project, I told myself I would take a new picture everyday, and so far so good. That's my purpose, to start something and stick to it. No fillers.
My hubby surprised me with a new Nikon Coolpix p100 for Christmas. I'll take a picture every day with it I told my husband.
I thought "what an original idea"...Little did I know there's a whole website dedicated to it!
So I joined and have been inspired to think outside the box when I take pictures. I'll never be a great photographer, but I do love taking pictures. Even when my memories fade, I'll still have my pictures to help me remeber.
I begun with a goal: show of the pictures I made of plants and nature, because they almost never make it to the family-album...
But I got really inspired at this place and now I still do take a lot of nature-pcs, but I also want to improve my skills and experiment. I'm totally hooked now and I even read a few books about this, that has never happend with an other hobby before!
to improve my skills and to document the year. I just wish I'd found the site earlier (by that I mean at the start of my training instead of in term 2)
365 is to stimulate ideas for subject matter and techniques, develop much better technical knowledge of photography, get an idea whether I am any good as a photographer, develop a habit of taking pictures and just generally enthuse about photography with others who understand the obsession!!
Being a mother of two and a wife I wanted to start this project just for me. No one else. I wanted to push myself to see if I could do it and try to get creative. Documenting my surroundings and not simply posting image of my kids, which for me would be very easy.
I have already come up with ideas to shot during the year. So I do not forget I have a book that I am writing things down in.
Started as an inexpensive way to decide whether my excitement over our new Canon point and shoot was just novelty or it would become a lifelong hobby. Has been a greater hobby than I knew and has become an inexpensive way to travel. I LOVE getting to see the world through all these lenses.
I started mine as a way to look back on 2011. I want to improve my photography skills what that isn't really why I started it. I hope that together my pictures capture something that reflects this year to me when I look back on it
ahhh!stephanie i swear i'm not stalking you! i need the motivation this site provides. i've used a few old photos here and there but for the most part this has definitely helped me get creative and off my bottom.
I am at a transitional point in my life where everything is flying by so fast. I wanted to slow things down by thinking about the really important things and making sure that I do so everyday. I was thinking that at the end of my year I would make a photobook of my most favorite pics of the year.. I do not beat myself up if I do not have a fresh pic for that day. I try to use one from the past day or two....and to make things even easier, if I can shoot a series of items, then post them one a day, I am covered for a few days!
This is pretty much just a hobby for me - a way of creating art in a more immediately gratifying way than I normally do. I would like to learn more, improve my skills, but also tie in my photos to the everyday things happening in my day. I want to be able to look back on my project and not just see random, pretty shots, but shots that hold memories of special moments or even mundane ones. I just want to document my year in an artistic way.
Mostly I started my project to improve my photography skills. I would like to get to the end of this year and be able to look back and see growth from the first to the end.
Not sure you actually need another comment but why not? I'm doing this to force myself to learn more about photography. I'm dying to find something that can become a "passion" -- and I'm already creative at work as a writer/editor/photographer for a newspaper. I'd like to get better and I'd like to get awesome shots more often that aren't accidental! With that in mind, I heard about this and thought I'd do something with that camera I've had for nearly 3 years :) I hope to create a book of the best photos of the year once I complete my first album!
I am doing this because it seems like fun and it's interesting. I like the idea of taking a picture everyday of the year, and then I can look back on it.
There so many reasons why I am here, (1) I want to learn and see different topics and subjects in photography; (2) I want to develop my skills in photography; (3) I want to see how people will react to my photos, because this is my way of sharing myself to them in my own little way; (4) To be inspired by other people's work; (5) To learn new techniques from other people who have interest in photography like those people who are sharing how do they do things such as post processing; (7) document the entire year through photos; (6) and to be part of the community where you have a common denominator which is all about photos and preserving priceless moments forever.
My Father passed away 2 weeks ago. I spent a lot of my time looking after him and working 2 jobs. Having lost my Dad I need something to fill my time. A friend introduced me to 365. I am not a photographer but o do like taking photos. This will be my visual dairy.
First, I thought it would be a nice thing to document my daily life, but soon I found myself trying different things with my camera and sharing the results. And often, I combine my pics and the written word, to express an emotion, or mood. 365 is a great inspiration, and definitely a personal gain.
@frogkw: Karen, I'm very sorry to hear about your dad!
I think my purpose on here is to get myself to use my camera's more often. I go through periods of time when i take loads and some days when i don't take any at all. So I am trying to take photos that interest me and hopefully will show some of my skill. My photo i put up on the 6th is pretty good
Just upgraded to my first DSLR camera and wanted to learn to use my new camera in the manual mode. Thought this would be a great way to force myself to practice everyday and make adjustments to improve my photo taking! I am also so grateful for the advice and vast experience the photographers have on this site! So inspired by everyone!
I've been now shooting for over 25 years. The good thing about photography is that it gives you the ability to constantly learn a few things or more. I began my career as a wedding photographer amazingly made a very good living from it. I've been able to expand my creativity recently to new heights. With the incoming of digital technology, this kind of critique and networking was non existence back in my time. I'm so glad that we can all expand our creativity, and why not help the newbies along the way. I look at 365 not as a competition level like other sites, but as a process of understanding. This site gives such a unique platform that is simply to use, and that we can all share our skills and knowledge without the EGO issue.
My purpose for starting ( today) is to have a place I can post my SLR shots daily. I have been addicted to Instagram (iphone share community) for 15 weeks now and gotten a lot of love and inspiration. Hoping to get addicted here too so I can keep on editing, getting better.
I'm aiming to be a pro photographer :) all Critique is welcome, always!
I just wanted some way to spark some creativity in my brain! I'm no photographer, but I can learn to take better pictures. I use The Daily Shoot assignments for inspiration most days but I want the pictures to ultimately say something about who I am personally.
I want to learn how to take better shots, also, it's made me look at the world differently.... everywhere I look, I think 'wow, that would be a great shot!' I'm noticing how the sun shines on things, how trees frame things, etc.....
pretty cool :-)
I take my camera with me everywhere I go now!
I am doing my 365 project in honor of a good friend that passed away 3 years ago. He died from cystic fibrosis, and any prints I sell of my photos, I am going to give 50% of the profit to help find a cure. I hope to improve my skills in the process as well, but we shall see :)
I'm doing it for the education. I learn well from watching others and then seeing if I can figure things out. I am attempting to hone my skills, and learn something new about photography everyday. I also enjoy sharing my work with others, because its no fun for me to discover things and have some creative work and no one to share it with.
It started out as a way to keep myself motivated to shoot every day - I love taking photographs, but I'm not always diligent about it, and I lose some of what I'm learning. This has kept me accountable and as a side bonus, I'm learning a lot and stretching my boundaries already.
@frogkw - I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I hope the photography can help you to heal.
Hopefully I'll improve and have a great year of photos to look back on!
I'm all about finding lovely captures/favorites that speak to me, that help make my days brighter or make my creative self joyful with appreciation of the beauty in the world and the many people who are willing to seek it.
