I got majorly dogged in Sydney tonight!! It's been cloudly and rainy all day but started to clear about an hour before the moon rose. I set up on the balcony and about 10 mins before the moon lifted above the trees, more clouds roll in. GAR!! I got a few shots of in the quick little breaks of cloud but nothing exciting.
Agree that it wasn't noticibly bigger. A touch, but not much.
@shadowdancer@meshinka - - - good luck to both of you :) @dcr - - - bummer :( maybe try the early hours of the morning? Its not 100% until 5:09am...Even if you try tomorrow night it will still look full :)
In my parts, it will be a full Moon starting at 2pm today, and the Supermoon starting at 3. So, I am getting ready for it to show. Didn't happen last night.
I hope I can come even close to what I am seeing posted here, they are truly awesome shots! Right now it is cloudy and rainy where I am, I am hoping everything clears up by tonight!
I have a Nikon D80 with my largest lens a 70-300 mm 1:4 - 5.6. Any advice I can get on my set up and settings would be greatly appreciated!!
I took mine on the 18th because that's when I thought it was the biggest, haha. If it's clear tonight, I'll try again. I was not totally happy with the results, going to try shooting RAW to see if that clears up the image a bit. And go down to something lower than iso200...
My first attempt at the moon. My zoom is only a 55mm-200mm. I experimented with variety of settings but could not ever get the details of the moon. Only what looked more like the sun. Ho hum. Tricks anyone?
@tmoore@karenkool the best moon tip I ever got was to shoot the moon like you would the sun; it's just as bright!
So experiment with small apertures (large number) and fast shutter speeds and you should get some good detail :)
I always thought you'd need to do a longer exposure, but that doesn't help at all!
@karenkool@karens68 Love both your photos of the moon Karen H and Karen S as they are different.
I shot these photos on March 18th around 7:30PM as a preview to tonight's moon. We might go up to Broken Bow,OK to get away from the city lights to have a better view. I enjoyed making this collage as the sun and moon were both up in the sky:
@shemchin You should get some fabulous pictures @ Broken Bow! Beautiful area this time of the year as well..
I see you're from Plano--I used to teach there.
Moon is bigger and brighter, having a big halo around!! Looks cute!!.. Sad that i dont have a Good camera to capture the very big and bright moon :( .. Its indeed a SUPER moon...
@buggirl - - - go to your pic, scroll down and on the right hand side it will say 'Share (copy and paste code) .... just copy it and post it here with your reply :) Hope that helps....lol I was expecting more from this Supermoon too :D
Perth is Western Australia, frankly it was very disappointing. We were at a friends for dinner and I took the camera and tripod to set up on their balcony (they thought me mad) and then the moon came up and... well it wasn't worth the effort, looked the same as every other night!! How come??
@michellegaynor - - - hahaha yeah I was expecting more, still beautiful though :) Apparently it is bigger (closer) but with nothing else in the sky to compare it too, it still looks the same to our eyes...well so I've read today :)
@selardore - a belated thanks for your advice on posting pics here.
here's my supermoon photo.....unlike all the others, it's a far away shot that could be a full moon on any night.
Had a great time shooting this from up on a mountain :]
I knew there would be a lot of shots of JUST the moon itself so i wanted to do something different then that (though I did one like that)
Not the right lens for moonpictures i'm afraid. But The light in my neighbourhood was different so I try to catch that! And you still can see how powerfull the moon was!
Thank you, everybody! YAY for all of these amazing moon photos! I was looking forward to seeing it, and then Saturday night was cloudy and overcast. But I saw a beautiful moon Friday night and one kind of in between clouds last night. I thought of how many moon photos would be here and couldn't wait to see them!!
IT'S A CRAP I NOW! it's just that, it's the only decent shot i got for the supermoon... my uv filter is stuck on my lens... T___T but at least i have a photo of the supermoon .. hihihihi wopeeeeeeeeeeeee. =)
I had a really bad time getting the moon in focus. Turns out, using the autofocus wasn't the best idea. So, I let my good friend 'google' loose on the subject, learned a bunch of new tricks that really helped, and now I actually have a nice shot of the moon, in pretty much perfect focus. Good thing that the moon is still quite large, too bad it is of tonight, and not the actual supermoon night. Still, I really wanted to share the results with you :-)
Nikon D5000 with Tamron 80-300mm lens (on 300mm) and tripod.
F8, 1/13 shutter, ISO200, full manual (including focus).
5 sec selftimer and shutter delay active to minimize wobble.
This was the best I could do with my camera, and I was really just impressed with the moonset at the prompting of my husband. Taken from the sidewalk in front of our house in Tucson AZ USA. Southwest USA.
i took this one sunday night from Brisbane, Australia at 9:52pm ... its not quite as clear as i would have liked, but its my best moon shot to date :))
Agree that it wasn't noticibly bigger. A touch, but not much.
@dcr - - - bummer :( maybe try the early hours of the morning? Its not 100% until 5:09am...Even if you try tomorrow night it will still look full :)
Will set my alarm and try and see what I can get at 5:09am :)
Beautiful pics so far!

Can't seem to upload mine....anyone have any tips?

Tonight, at sunset :-)
I see you're from Plano--I used to teach there.
To all: I am finding so many new fav because of this thread. We have an awesome group of photographers on this site! Congrats to all of you!
might try tonight too.
It's cloudy and overcast today in central Oklahoma. I'm hoping it clears for the moon rise.

Looks JUST like a moon.. haha
Loving all these photos!
this was my last night...it was cloudy and hazy
Not much of a Supermoon here. Stupid clouds and stupid rain ruining my shots ;-)
Inverted pic of the 18 March
and taken yesterday on 19 March
the best i can do with my point and shoot..
here's my supermoon photo.....unlike all the others, it's a far away shot that could be a full moon on any night.
I even caught a bird!
I knew there would be a lot of shots of JUST the moon itself so i wanted to do something different then that (though I did one like that)
I darkened the exposure on purpose to get a feel for the texture of the moon.
This was Sat. just after moonrise, it was this deep orange color for about 10 min.
This was moonset..early morning Sun.
Full moon photographed in Mexico

and this for the fact that I did manage to get some detail
Shot SOOC... not incredibly happy with the shot, but had an awesome time watching it rise over the Gulf of Mexico. :)
That's my dad and the moon. Looks more like the beginning of an X-files episode, but yeah. :)
This was my best view, not that great! But, I did get some detail, yeah.
Shadow of a lady taking pictures of the supermoon
Taken in Launceston on Sunday 20 March around 9pm
Shot at 200mm (340mm on the crop sensor) so this image is a massive crop at 100% so the it's not the best.....
