Hey!

Choosing your first DSLR is always a tedious task, but I think there are a lot of people on here who can help you out.

Before you start researching what camera you want to buy, you need to figure out what your budget is going to be.

Personally, as your first DSLR I would suggest going with a Nikon D5000 if you're willing to spend a little.
It's ~$700, but definitely worth every penny.
It's a really easy to use camera, you learn a lot from it, you get a huge LCD screen on the back to look at your pictures and you can also shoot movies on it.
If you're looking for a cheaper camera, the D3000 is equally as good, but doesn't have screen or HD movie. It's a couple of hundred dollars cheaper, but still amazing.

Another awesome camera brand is definitely Canon.
To begin with, I suggest going with a Canon XSi (~$600). Simple, easy to use, you learn a lot etc. etc.
Also, a cheaper version would be the Canon XS which is also awesome.

Choosing the right camera also depends on how it feels in your hands. So, after you've done a bit of research on what camera you want, I suggest actually going into Future Shop or something and testing the camera out, holding it for yourself. You know?

Anyways, pardon my rambling.

I hope that helps :)
