@webfoot thank you for sharing my photo! :)
I'm left eyed and right handed.
Another thing you made me think about was how photography has affected other things I use my eyes for -- namely, shooting darts. I think people naturally have a tendency to close one eye to line up and aim a dart, and it took some serious practice for me to be able to do it with both eyes opened and focused. Now that I'm in school for photography and doing my 365 - my dart game has seriously suffered!!
OMG- how weird! Right handed and left eyed here too! Sometimes my nose hits things it shouldn't- like the timer button :( My optometrist says it's not common for the dominant hand and dominant eye to be mixed... but here we all are~ funny.
I don't have any feeling in my left side (brain surgery screwed me up there) so I hold the camera with my right hand and when I use the viewfinder it's with my right hand side eye.
@valhamil I would bet that if someone did a study, photographers are not either left or right brain dominant. There is so much art and so many technical aspects...you have to see the whole picture (left brain) and be able to make it happen (right brain)...
Right handed, right-eye dominant. A couple years ago I was trying to figure out why I went through my right eye's contact lenses so much quicker, and then I realized that between photography and target shooting, I kept my right eye open a lot more than my left, and for prolonged periods of time.
shooting a camera - left eye, with the right eye also open, good idea to keep both eyes open if you can train yourself to do that.
shooting a gun - right eye, left eye closed
right handed in all that I do, writing, eating, etc.
My camera doesn't have a viewfinder, but I prefer having a viewfinder. If I had a viewfinder, I would use my right eye and I'm right handed. oh, and @nikkers I'm right footed too.
Both eyes shut praying the shot will happen for me ? !
seriously tho this is interesting , i just assumed right handed = right eyed , left handed = letf eyed BUT obviously i was wrong haha ! ....... Im Right Handed and use my Right Eye :)
@webfoot Very interesting, it's been a while since I used a camera with a true viewfinder...
I wonder what this says about left brain and right brain function, and the style of pictures people take (who habitually use one eye or the other)
I would love to be able to shoot left-handed, but I have yet to meet a camera with the shutter release button on the "correct" side of the body... ;-)
Until that happens, I shoot right-handed, viewing with the right eye, left eye open (or just slightly closed, depending on ambient light). Truth be told, though, I never thought of viewing with my left eye on a right-handed camera... may have to try that.
I'm right/right. The entire right side of my body is dominant, though I've tried using my left eye before...it was REALLY awkward. Though I've noticed something, and I wanna know if anyone else has the same issue.
It's not really a big deal, just something I noticed. When I shoot, I use my right eye, like I said, and my left eye is closed (not sure how tightly...I think it varies. Sometimes squeezed shut, other times just normally closed), and when I open it again, my vision (in only my left eye) is all blurry. I mean, I wear glasses, but it's blurry even WITH the glasses. After a while (3-10 minutes), my vision goes back to normal. Just wondering if everyone gets the same thing.
Very interesting question!! I am dominant right handed....looking through the viewer with my right eye....and can't think if I close my left eye when shooting. Truthfully never thought to try viewing with my left eye. When I get my camera back, I am going to try using my left eye. Excellent discussion @webfoot!
Right handed, left eye. I had issues with my left contact lens on Sunday so I couldn't use that eye to focus the camera. It was so hard to force myself to use my right eye and I'm worried some of the shots might not have come out right because I had to go against my usual method.
And while reading some of these responses, I just picked up my camera to see what it would be like looking through the viewfinder with my right eye.
OY! I felt like it feels when you cross your arms the other way. You know if you cross normally left over right and try it the other way it just feels weird? That's the way it felt trying to look through my camera with my right eye.
And yet, I use a camcorder with my right eye. Go figure.
I'm left eyed and right handed.

left handed, left eye when I use the Canon (which has a viewfinder)
I quite often don't close my other eye, so I can watch for other stuff happening too...
or some times i use my LCD screen because my eyes are really bad and indoors using the view finder can be hard for me
