As a lot of you know, I recently had the opportunity to travel back to my sleepy little country hometown and shoot some photos. The thing about my hometown: it has a population of less than 500, and I've only been back there twice in the last 12 years. This time, however, I took my camera. So...
Show me one photo that explains to me what your hometown is, or one photo that represents something significant about your hometown.
I'm from London and I love the bustle and city lights. The only photo that I have taken so far for this is from early in my project and I hope that I can do better soon.
I grew up in the suburbs. Meh. I do have 2000 acres in southern Mississippi in my inheritance, but I'm not wishing for my dad to die so I can have it! So here's my 'burbs photo. I have to depend on the Texas skies and Lightroom to make it look magical. :)
I guess you would say I have two hometowns, neither of which I really have decent pictures of however. I was born in one place, but grew up in another.
Where I was born, if I had a picture it would be something taken at the University of Notre Dame. The university dominates South Bend, Indiana.
I grew up in Santa Ana, California. Nothing much as it just part of a conglomeration of towns southeast of Los Angeles all blending together to create Orange County, but the entire area of Orange County during the 60s and 70s was dominated by one thing. Disneyland.
@araminta Haha...I just found a lighthouse near where I live that is also completely surrounded by the ocean. But that one...do those stairs really just lead straight to the ocean?
@jasonbarnette No that is at high tide, I had to edit a couple of pics I put up as if read too quickly that I was only allowed one photo... but seeing as you ask ; P Here it is at low tide (you cant see that much but gives you the general idea )
I grew up in Palo Alto, CA - - we used to hike in the foothills above Palo Alto all the time. There are still amazing and undeveloped areas around there (thank goodness). This is an iconic structure called Frenchman's Tower that still exists on Old Page Mill Road. . .
@araminta That's amazing! The lighthouse I shot at Folly Beach, SC is always surrounded by the ocean now. It was built over 130 years ago and at the time was on the middle of three islands. All three of those islands have eroded away now. Even at low tide, the waves still surround it.
@suomiiiii What are you waiting for? I already sent you an invitation!
I grew up on the Severn, nearby the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In this photo is the bridge known as the Academy Bridge and the Academy sits to the left on the far side. There are runners on this bridge in any type of weather and the Blue Angels perform in this general area every Spring during Commisioning Week.
I grew up in on a small farm in Carthage located in the North Country of New York. We have lived in Shirley, MA for 15 years. When we go back to NY to visit, we still say, "we're going back home." I don't have any pictures of my hometown, but here is one of Shirley. Shirley reminds me of where I came from. A small rural village. If you want to know more about this historic building, click on the picture.
I'm from Montreal, so I'm a little biased about how great it is and how I miss it (since I live in Washington, DC now). So, here's a view of my downtown...
@nikkers You live in such a beautiful place! You may not have bored me but you have made me supremely jealous.
Here's the nifty Gothic chapel at the University of Virginia in my hometown of Charlottesville, VA. I miss my home. New Jersey (where I live now) just doesn't compare.

It's the people that make Belfast a great place to live ... and it's a pretty good city as well!
