Just found for the second time, a stock photo found on the Internet posted on the Popular Page...Personally I'm having a great time taking photos...some definately better than others, but that's what it's all about, I thought...taking photos documenting our lives, regions, etc. And I'm sure we all make up some of our own 'rules' about that...but...an internet photo...?
I agree - it's disconcerting, and seems to go against the "spirit" of the 365 Project. I guess there's no way to stop it from happening, but if someone wants to post a stock photo, I think they should say that's what it is in their title or description.
yer i think it is thier choice also, but in saying that when i saw it, it was instantly faved, only to read the comments, realise and remove from fave. i was slightly disapointed.
I know id rather take a photo of my carpet or something insanley boring at last minute, without any creative thought to it, than to put up a photo that wasnt mine.
but thats just me.
I didn't catch that photo, but it is disheartening for me to hear this. Every photo I share is my own. I thought that was the point of 365. These are my memories of things I found. Not sure what to say about this news.
latest one I saw was yesterday http://365project.org/weddinglady/365/2010-04-23 ,but they said it wasn't there's and they said they found it on Google. I also saw a pic a few months back it was a finger with a blood drop on it and it was a professional photographers picture, when the person was called out , the picture disappeared.
But to me whatever, I will keep using my own pictures.
Since this is about recording a year in our personal lives sometimes I think a stock photo can be warrented- like the volcano pic someone posted- it had an impact on them somehow and they wanted to mark/remember it. Like any "borrowing" tho I think it should have to be referenced - which the volcano photo was I think (or at least they said it wasnt their pic). Personally I am having more trouble narrowing a pic down to just one to waste a precious space with someone elses pic :)
I really am not a fan of people posting pictures that have been created by other people, even if its stock.... what a waste of a comment when that person doesn't deserve it, the original creator does.
It frustrates me a little when I spend half the day trying to get a photo i am please with, and other people go to goggle and type in "PRETTY PICTUREPLEASSSEEE"
I'd prefer folk to use their own work whether SOOC or edited, I don't mind. But to use a stock photo....no.....we're trying to give a year of our lives and however much a photo moves or speaks....then I'd assume 365 isn't the forum for it. Use (and credit) stock on a blog.... To put it up and allow someone to think that you took the image.... no, that's not on at all!
I hate to feel like a whiner...and glad to see that others share my point of view, so to speak. Actually I was quite impressed with the volcano photo also and glad it was posted...and rightly credited. And of course, anyone can do what they want...BUT, it just sorta upset me to see a stock photo on the Popular Page. Get with it, Monkeys!
Yeah... I don't like the idea of using another person's photo. I wouldn't even let my husband push the button for me when I took my yard photo last night even if it would have been WAY easier than trying to balance my camera on the garbage can LOL. Just seems all sorts of wrong to me.
I think that it is just plain wrong, unless you state that the photo is not your own in the caption. To me, 365 is is a way to express yourself, and expressing yourself doesn't mean using someone else's expression. However, if you say that it is a stock photo in the caption, it's not morally wrong. It just goes against the spirit of 365.
I'm glad folks are still discussing this because it happened again today. An internet photo on the popular page. We all admire other people's work of course but the spirit of this place is to share our efforts not someone else's. I know I get an incredible buzz if my photo makes it onto the popular page, it's a shame to take a space that could be a 365 ers picture.
I personally want to do the 365 project as it was intended... to get better at photography and to document my life. However, there are no 365 police and if you want to cop out then so be it. That said, my engineering discipline comes to the fore and I think that if you ARE going to copy a photo then at least have the decency to cite it as a reference
I thought I was calmed down about this thing, but having it happen AGAIN and not only on the Popular Page but also the Home page...Geeze...I agree, if someone posts someone elses photo...like from National Geographic...it should be mentioned up front...at the top...under the photo. Monkeys, monkeys, monkeys, eat more bananas and wise up...!
usually you know it a stock photo or a photo from the internet because the people straight up say that they got it from and email of off the web. and it's sad that even if I like the picture it just doesn't have the same appeal as an ACTUAL photo would have! I love being pushed to take pics on the days when i feel a little unmotivated and it forces you to get a little more creative. isn't that what 365 is all about??
I'm pretty new to 365, but am having the BEST time finding shots and attempting some of the theme stuffs. I've gotten several friends & family into helping me find things and all making suggestions. I'm seeing the best shots of others and learning so much. To think some of the stuff I am seeing may be "fakes", that is so disheartening. I'd really like for those that are posting those, and maybe some sort of link to the stock shot, to be "outed". Thankfully the folks I'm so into following are truthful and I know their shots are theirs...and they are AWESOME! boooohiisssssboooo to those fakers!
I may've used a photo which I didn't take, a couple of times - but always saying so, saying who did take it, and explaining why I'm using it over one I took...
I can spot a stock photo as sometimes I've already received it in an email...the sort forwarded around the world from friends...
I used an internet photo of a squirrel behind a camera one day, but I said what it was, and it was a joke that I removed at the end of the day. It *did* make the popular page, but I'm sure the monkeys knew it was a joke, too.
Just not good form to take someone else's image and call it your own...
wow, and I didn't even totally agree with using pictures not taken on that day. But to use ones that aren't even yours - that's not the point of this project. I know I'm not very good but I'm learning from this project and it's a great way to see what's I've been doing my year.
The only time I can see using someone else's work is in the handful of photos I've seen used a tribute to someone, or as part of a collage (maybe on that one). I think just pulling random photos off the internet to use just seems to have no place in this kind of project.
Agreed with all of the above! Stock photos = bad... even as part of a collage I use my own pix. I rather someone take a photo of the sidewalk outside their home 10 days in a row than use a stock photo. On a positive note... I'm really enjoying eveyone's photos here...that they've taken with their own two hands. : ]
I'm not going to get too worked up about it. If someone feels the need to post a stock photo thats up to them. I'm doing my own photos and enjoy following those who do the same.
Each to his own. It doesn't affect me so why get worked up about it i say. far greater things in life for me to get concerned about.
I think it is sad that they don't feel confident enough to take their own photos. This is more about learning about your life by taking your own photos than anything else.
Foe me, the joy in this project is seeing what each of you create daily. I am not very interested in a "stock' photo, although there may be a time when it makes sense, as long as the poster lets all know that it is NOT their creation and why they are choosing to use it :o)
I don't really understand why anyone would post a stock photo and claim they took it. I mean, integrity aside, the embarrassment of getting caught and being exposed as a fraud would be way too much for me!
I pondered this very question when I saw a second stock photo on the popular page. Is it now a computer generated selection who makes it to the popular page then I would understand .
The person who posted the photo clearly stated it was uploaded from the internet underneath the image. It may be just me but I would weed out the stock photo's and feature pictures taken by the 365 participants.
Now off to take a picture.
For me a photo that documents something like a big news story that has happened in the world (as 365 is also about looking back huh?) is fine, and I understand the need for memories. But to be fair it should be clearly stated that its been 'borrowed'.
But to just use pics that someone likes and for no other reason does seem to go against the spirit of 365. Hey ho. I guess at the end of the day it doesnt matter, and the only person who really misses out is the uploader..
I, also, have seen several stock photos on the popular page. I find it rather disconcerting to see them there or anywhere on this site for that matter. I thought the whole idea of the "game" was to document our lives one day at a time and pulling stock or "canned" photos certainly isn't the way to do that. Most of us struggle some days to find things photo worthy for that day but eventually find something that "we" like and use it. I feel terribly guilty when I have to use photos that I have made in the past just like I have had to this past week. But, with what we have dealt with taking care of my "Grandpa" I didn't have the time to think about photography. Okay....my rant is over.
I go with the "no stock photo" motto, it's not what 365project was created for and it's disheartening to think people are taking credit for photos that aren't theirs.....that's poor character and blatant dishonesty. It disappointing but what can you do??? Me, I'm going to only use my own photos. That's my opinion.....
I've noticed this, too, and it totally rubs me the wrong way. Consider the feelings of the person who actually put in the effort to take that photo, and who may be trying to augment his/her income by selling photos to stock companies, or displaying them in online galleries as a way to drum up business (e.g., the notorious needle-stick finger photo)...what must it feel like to have someone claim your work as their own? Not good, I wouldn't think. It's not a thing I'm likely to have to worry about, but there are people on here who post professional-quality work and who knows where else their photos are turning up online with someone else's name attached...
I think that stock photos are okay, as long as 1. credit is given and 2. you do something to the photograph, like edit it or something.
The most recent picture I posted was a stock image of Megan Fox. But, I used that for retouching. I believe retouching allows me to grow as a photographer- I'm not going to repeat everything I said on the image, so if you'd like to view it, feel free to do so.
But, taking a stock image and claiming it as your own is always wrong. I don't think 365 should have rules, I think it's a form of expression and everyone should express themselves, but essentially stealing... that's not expression.
That's... stealing.
I've noticed this as well. I knew immediately since it was a wallpaper on my ipod. It was not credited and was on the popular page and getting many comments asking how it was done or praising the "photographer".
I think it does go against the spirit of 365 but I also think some users think any picture is better than no picture. Also the one I noticed was a new user who probably just wanted to share a photo they liked. I don't think the intention to deceive is actually formed. Still it is always better to credit the source when you didn't take the photo yourself.
I'd never post someone else's photo. This is my project so the only photos I will post are ones I took myself...but that is the standard I set for myself...others may have lower standards, I guess ...or they look at things differently...regardless, if someone posts a photo they "borrowed" then I choose not to make a comment on their page that day...why bother as my comments are meant for the person who took the photo.

Bad form I say!
But to me whatever, I will keep using my own pictures.

Am loving the challenge of taking my own photos.
This is a forum for originality, not ripoff-ogrophy.
Seriously, people .....
