Do you get frustrated?

May 14th, 2011
I took a ton of close-ups of my lily of the valley flowers this morning and hate everyone of them. Are you lucky in capturing a good shot right away or do you get disappointed like I do. I want this to be fun and not tedious but I want to get a good shot. Does anyone else have trouble capturing shots?

It happens - try not to be too hard on yourself. You won't learn if you don't try (and fail) :)
May 14th, 2011
Oh I wish I could show you all the crap shots I took yesterday and only got 1 that I was ok enough with to post.....
May 14th, 2011
Oooh yes.I get very frustrated. Especially right now doing the self portrait challenge. If only everyone could see the rejects. Everyones belly would hurt from laughing.

I just went through the same thing earlier this week so I know that frustration well. I just posted the best of the (crappy) bunch and moved on to try something else the next day. I bet we've all had days like that but you'll bounce back and get a fantastic shot soon. It probably evens out in the end with the crappy days made up for by the days you nail it and get a stunning shot on your first try another day. Good luck!

I have days where nothing works out no matter how hard I try. I find on macros I need to really do about 50 to find about three that are going to possibly work.
May 14th, 2011
Of course it happens, but sometimes I think that we are just to hard on ourselves, if someone else to the same pictures you did and posted them, would your feelings be the same? Or do you just expect more from you than others? I know I do, and I think many of us here do as well.

Ive always heard that 100 shots are needed to get One good shot...
sometimes ya get lucky and sometimes you dont.
But I believe I learn more from my mistakes that successes ,

also if we never fail,, then how do we know when we succeed?
May 14th, 2011
I get frustrated every and each day, I have to do tones of shots to get the one I think is the best
May 14th, 2011
Yes! I get frustrated. I wasn't happy with a single shot yesterday and I have days like that, a lot of days like that. If I hate everything I captured, I usually go with an older photo.
May 14th, 2011
I took 140 shots yesterday with my D90. Two of my 365 pics were iPhone. Rough day. :)

sometimes...

Happens to me all the time! IMO trial and error is the best method of learning. You will never learn if you don't fail and understand what you did wrong, so you can correct it the next time.

What I hate even more is looking at the LCD screen on the camera thinking you have this spectacular shot, but then when you see it on the computer you are like, "Ew, that looks like crap!"

Luckily for me, I have quite liked my photos these past few days, so much that I am having trouble picking out just one to post! Which is a good turn of events for the crap filled week I have been having!

That and I am usually extremely hard on myself. The photos I tend to hate, everyone else loves. And the ones I absolutely love, everyone else hates.
May 14th, 2011
Yes! Sometimes I think the light and everything is great, but then the photos look crappy for some reason. I do think your standards get higher on this site, which is good, but can lead to frustration.
May 14th, 2011
I so know how that feels! Most of the time I try to come back later or try another day. It's always hard to let a (brilliant) idea go. I think my average is about 50 shot with less than five worth looking at twice...
May 14th, 2011
Oh, YES! I get frustrated. Sometimes, I try and try and try to get shots to work out right. I get so frustrated. Eventually, I get the shot to work out (usually on another day) and sometimes I just let that idea go. I know what I want to come out in each shot and many times I do not achieve that. I also find that I am my own worst critic. I have to tell myself to enjoy taking pictures and to celebrate when I get a shot that I love.

Thank you all for your comments. It really makes me feel better that I'm not the only one having days like that and you've all helped me realize to just keep trying.

@wjw1741 I agree with that, Warren. I do think we are sometimes too hard on ourselves. I love other peoples photos but don't like mine many times.

@kcphotography I've also thought I've had a good shot looking into the viewfinder but when I see it on the computer, it looks awful. Hate that, especially if it is out of focus and I don't have another shot of it.
May 14th, 2011
@brumbe Macro is when I usually get most frustrated. Many times it is not focusing on what I want it to be focused on. I guess I just have to take more shots.
May 14th, 2011
@mittens I once read an interesting article where it said if you are a person who feels that they must take a lot of photos of the same subject, you should practice only taking approximately five photos instead, which focuses you on relying on your eye to see the exact image you want before you take the photo. If you are a person who usually takes two photos and are never satisfied, you should take 100 photos of the same subject to force you to see new perspectives and angles of the subject.

I will say my landscape and architectural shots I limit to about three per subject. Macros and flowers could last all day.

I get a bit frustrated at times too, especially on a shot that I just can't get right. However, sometimes I'll post a photograph here or show one to family or friends and get surprised that they really really like it.

So sometimes it helps to have the perspective of others too because, as already stated, we can be hard on ourselves sometimes.
May 14th, 2011
no frustration here. it is always fun.
May 14th, 2011
@bobfoto well, lucky you!
May 14th, 2011
yes
May 14th, 2011
Just like the moon, we wax and wane from day to day. If all of our pictures were effortless then what value would we place on those we pushed ourselves to get?
May 14th, 2011
I get a tad frustrated but try to always make it fun and enjoyable. Thats how I learn is taking crap photos haha.
May 14th, 2011
Thank you again for all your comments. I love what you are all saying. It's good to hear what others think. I am going to definitely hang in there and keep trying. I really do love taking pictures even thought it is frustrating sometimes.

@brumbe Thank you for relating that article. I'll have to keep that in mind and try to be more conscientious when taking pictures.

I get frustrated when it's a shot I set up and work on for half an hour or so to capture. I delete a ton of photos daily because they suck. I tend to move on quickly though. If I'm not getting any good shots after about five minutes, I move on to something else, unless it's something I REALLY want to get. Most of my shots are pretty quick, but I take a bunch of different subjects to make it easier to choose.
May 14th, 2011
@triciaanddazzle I've actually done that, too, Tricia. If something isn't working I'll move onto something else. I think I'm going to give up on the lilies of the valley flowers. I've not only taken a bunch this morning but have gone out and taken a many shots on other days. I guess it's time to let this one go. LOL
May 14th, 2011
It happens to everyone! Sometimes I get the shot on the first try and sometimes it's the 175th time! LOL! You never know what the day will bring!
May 14th, 2011
@mittens You can always revisit them on another day. I've been trying to get a good reflection shot of our pond, but it just hasn't happened yet. I have 306 more days to try though, haha!
May 14th, 2011
It happens to everyone--just move on and save the shot for another day. Or scrap it altogether (:
May 14th, 2011
Lately when I'm frustrated I just post a "crap" shot that winds up on the PP. So now, I just post my "crap" and am normally pleasantly surprised that I am the only one who thinks it's yucky. Hang in there, we all go through these periods.
May 14th, 2011
Thank you again. All good advice.
@cfitzgerald That's so funny Courtney about getting your piece of "crap" on the PP. I guess you never know what someone else will think.
May 14th, 2011
Very frustrated today, nothing so far. That all look awful.
So glad I am not the only one and a lot of good advice and comments here.
May 14th, 2011
I think that's life really!
May 15th, 2011
i also have days where i don't like anything i'm shooting. but then there will be days where every shot seems great, effortlessly. it's something i love about doing this 365 project though, because i makes me keep shooting and posting even if i feel like it's no good. many times i will end up seeing something good that i didn't notice at first. or even if i don't, at least i kept shooting and practicing and learning. but also, when i feel like i'm not shooting anything good, i like to go out and say today i'm just shooting for me, doesn't matter if it's good or bad or if anyone ever sees it, forget the rules, just shoot. when i can get into that mindset, i end up shooting some of my best stuff.
May 15th, 2011
You've all been so helpful to me. Great comments.
@betsylou You are right. I keep telling myself to enjoy taking pictures whether they are good or bad so as to help me to learn more and keep in practice. I am going to try to keep that mindset. Like I mentioned above, I want to enjoy it and not feel like it is so tedious.
