Does anyone know what the actual criteria is for getting on popular?
I follow someone who's shots are actually ridiculously amazing, she get's quite a few favs (6 or 7 on each photo...) but has only been on a popular with 2 shots months ago, and even then she was only on it for about an hour!
Although I've seen some shots on popular that have only had 2 or 3 favs, and not even that many views... so what is the criteria for it?
Nobody knows and nobody *will* know, because if anyone knew, they could game it. It's not hard to figure out some likely criteria, though. Something along the lines of the rate of accruing of favs/comments/views (in that order) as proportion of your follower count.
I think it's a matter of "less is more". I have a feeling that, to a certain degree, having many followers can be detrimental. For example, if someone with just 20 followers gets 25 views on a shot, plus 2 or 3 favs, that's going to alert the magic monkeys more readily than someone with 300 followers whose shot gets 50 views and 10 favs. I believe it's a "percentages" game... though I'm not 100% sure on that. ;-)
And hrm someone said it in some thread or comment that... I don't even know! There's too much craziness going on all over the shop and my poor wee little (beastly) head can't keep track of it ._.
to give you an idea I am around 212 followers and for me I seem to go popular with 4 favs and anywhere from 15 to 25 comments within the first day or so of posting...its pretty consistent the past month I had 12 photos on popular back to back and two or three simultaneously however sometimes less favs does it and surprisingly enough sometimes a good photo just doesn't...my wife had a couple that based on my gist of how popular works I thought would definitely go and did not which is a shame I really wanted people to see how awesome the photo's were
well ive had a couple of recent shots that i thought might make it one with 11 favs i think it was and nope it never made it :( ...... keeps us all on our toes i guess haha !
@andycoleborn Ah. I've been trying to figure out how to get on the PP more but maybe I should just chill then, For a time it seems the 10 comments and 3 fav;s did the trick. Lately I get as many as 25 comments and 1 fav and I don't get on the pop page. I guess it's a bit more random than I thought. There are so many of us, I guess that there has to be some sort of rotation in place.
I think it is rigged...that you guys who are on the PP page all the time are slipping Ross $$$ under the table or something like that (wink). I've even wondered if the monkeys have something against American photographers since so few of us get honored there (wink again). It's a complete mystery to me so I've given up on the PP --- it depresses me too much. (I do wish, however, that the monkeys would expand their vision a little more widely and look at us little people once in a while.) I'm trying not to get my strokes from the PP and working more towards trusting the comments from my following both on here and at home. Sigh.
@dejongdd I am an american photographer and I lost count on how many PP photo's I have had I think I am around 16-17 but I am thinking perhaps if you have had a lot of popular page exposure over time it adds another factor to the algorithm and makes it slightly harder for your to get a popular again like you need like 5 more comments than before lol
This is interesting! I have 138 pics so far and no pop page yet. Boo. Maybe someday...but I am doubting it. Good to know that it is not just about being popular. :)
This question will always be asked and will never be answered. Some PP photos have hundreds upon hundreds of views, huge amounts of Fav's, some have 20-dd views and maybe 1 fav, it's just how it is, same with the home page, I mean, a shot of my socks made it there lol. And like @eyebrows /Beast Man said, if we knew how it worked people would play on it just to get there, where's the fun in that? I love when someone comments on one of my photos to say it's there.
I did find that all of the photos of mine that did make it to the PP had either dry ugly oak leaves in them, or my cat Tallulah's face. Isn't that funny?
Okay, thanks for all the replies guys, I'm not sure if I actually wanted an answer so much, just wondered if there was a real reason as to why this person wasn't getting on PP!
Did you ever mention who you were referring to? (I didn't take the time to read every response on here) Give us her name and we can see what we can do to give her more exposure.
i have a photo last 3 days that went to the POP with 4 faves... at least now it reached 15.. i really don't know the criteria... but i think @eyebrows and @marshy15 are always there... =) no doubt about it anyway.. they're clever.. =)
You have to have a photo of either a squirrel, flower macro or crap being dropped into water. None of which interest me ... ergo ... @aoifemaeve Now a "Least Popular" page would probably LOVE my photos! Wait, what? :p
so, I don't check the popular page often... if at all. How do you know you made it to the pp? do you have to view the page to see? or does it say so somewhere on your photo?
@annaruth keep an eye on the page to see if you've made it. Or if someone viewed it there and made a comment they often say something like, saw this on the Popular page.......or congrats on the PP. It is a page worth viewing I think, gives one inspiration and leads you to new folk to follow. @manek43509 Ah ha I wondered what you did lurking in the shadows there :-))
And for my two penny worth.....I don't take photos that aim to please the magic monkeys but I do get a heck of a thrill if my picture makes it there, nothing wrong with that!! :-)
@eyebrows@dejongdd Ironically, the person I was referring to, did get on PP with one of the pictures I had hoped she would and it actually stayed there for a time!
Referring to @rainbowsnic42 although mybe her shots aren't as great as I think they are... maybe I'm just biased 8-)
@superdex And don’t forget cats. Cat pictures get you on, too. I’ve taken two mediocre photos of my cat, and both of them made the popular page. Go figure.
This thread appears every so often and I think the general consensus is that it is a formula incorporating followers / views / favs / time for those to accrue and then, of course, probably just some that Ross likes without adhering to stats thrown in for good measure . . .
Forget the popular page...what if there was a feature on your own account that told you YOUR most popular photo to date (some calculation of views/comments/favs), regardless of how many followers you have.
Now THAT would be cool! I'd love to know what the computer thinks is my "best" photo -- based on that.
Is this "feature" something I could enjoy with an ace membership? Does it exist?
@andycoleborn Funny thing though...you mention not getting on and then you do. I never got on for the first time until after I mentioned it somewhere that I never had and really wanted to...maybe there's something to that. Not saying you only got on because of that,,,I love that pic. It's totally awesome and worthy. But not every great pic can get on....not enough space and there's so much talent out here. Just saying. I wish I didn't feel compelled to check it so much though....LOL
When I first started, trying to get on the popular page seemed really important to me. Now it's more the project itself--although it would be nice, the goal changed. :-)
@nikkers, I was reading this thread, wondering when you would chime in. I'm actually impressed that @eyebrows didn't have a similar answer...must have caught him in a good mood! lol
I don't understand what the big deal is about getting on the PP. This isn't a popularity contests, but it seems that this is what everyone is turning this project into. How many pictures can you get on the PP? How many followers can you get? How many views can you get on your pics. All meaningless numbers.
I have to agree with @superdex I have noticed the same thing. Everything going on the PP is starting to become cliche photos. Everyone knows whats popular now so everyone is doing it. Not to be rude but honestly, I am getting tired of seeing the photos with waterdrop and the ripples. Or the one with the waterdrop on an object and the reflection of the object behind it reflected in the drop. Yeah its neat but it is so overdone that it has completely lost its awe-factor. Now its just, oh, one of "those" pictures. Yes, I will probably try to do one of these at some point in time because I like to experiment, but I guarantee you that if I post one it'll never make it to the PP because I'm not very popular. It seems to be that none of my stuff, ever gets much recognition. I thought some of my stuff was as good as some of the others. I don't know maybe I'm just fooling myself. So I stopped caring about the stupid page. It seems rigged. I know theres an algorithm to it, but I always fall short of its expectations. And if it includes percentage of followers, half of my followers have quit so that would screw up my numbers. I have 47 followers and average around 10 views per picture (there has been a slight spike lately in views, but that too shall pass). I'm not complaining by the way. Just stating what I have seen.
There needs to be a "should have been popular" page where the monkeys go around and shuffle through random photos til they find some with hardly any recognition that should have been popular. Just my opinion...
It's slightly unfair to say that people are taking a certain kind of pic just to get on PP. Surely we are here to be inspired by others and try out new images that we might not of before. Inevitably, this leads to pics being produced which owe a large tip of the hat to othere 365ers.
I know that the 'crown of water splash' is cliched but I'd love to bag it to say that I've done it and ticked another photo milestone. Much like my water balloon pic. Done to death and much better in the past by others but boy I had fun taking it.
@5unflow3r - I notice that sometimes I appear on the PP for a short amount of time, such a 6 hours or so instead of the 24 hours or greater. These short times usually occur at night (Colorado time). Such was the case of a recent photo: http://365project.org/dune1953/365/2011-06-06

@eyebrows you name's getting longer and longer....
@davidchrtrans "I believe it's a "percentages" game... though I'm not 100% sure on that. ;-)" LOL!!! :)
@eyebrows think I missed something...why The Beast?? Did you lose Beauty?
And hrm someone said it in some thread or comment that... I don't even know! There's too much craziness going on all over the shop and my poor wee little (beastly) head can't keep track of it ._.
I know. But as a middle-man, I take a £5 commission, so the RRP is £15.
p.s. Love your duck photos!
Oh did I type that out loud?? Well how rude of me!!

And also, I would like to say (a bit ironically) that I made the PP today, lol! =D
