Window Bird Feeders

May 24th, 2011
Yes, I'm here again to talk about window feeders. Does anybody know (who has one) how long it generally takes for birds to come? Or, why it's been over a week and not a single bird has visited? We live in a semi-industrial area, but there are still lots of trees.

Every window we have faces a neighbor's window (about 20 feet away). Could the birds be too scared to eat from a feeder that looks like it's surrounded?

Anyone have any tips, suggestions, encouragement? I'm feeling impatient and frustrated! Lol!

Maybe try different bird feed? We just use sunflower seed and get cardinals, house finch, sparrows, and lots of squirrels. I don't have any photos because the window screen ruins the quality of the photos and they won't come if I wait for them outside. They don't come if I'm moving too close to the window or if the traffic is busier than normal. Generally the birds adapt to the neighborhood. In the spring it can take a few days for them to find the feeder. Maybe it will take a little longer for them to find you if you've never had a feeder there before?

Try a Mac Bird Feeder instead. They're a bit more money, I know, but the design is much better...

@herussell Thanks for all your comments! That makes a lot of sense. I guess it's just about being patient. The birds seed I got was pretty generic for "songbirds" in my area. I think either they're not used to it yet, they don't see it, or they see me inside! I know there have been no birds yet, because he seed level is the same and there are no shells anywhere on the ground or near the feeder. I guess I will just have to wait. =)

@allegresse
Nope - 'twas but a joke. ;)

I had no idea that company even existed! Should've done my homework, eh?

@manek43509 Ha ha! I first interpreted it as a joke (and I would quite agree, as I type this on my macbook pro). ;-) But, then I googled it and there it was!

@manek43509 It was my husband's choice, actually. But, I have learned to be friend's with it. =D

Oh, I love mine! (My MacBook Pro, that is - not my husband. I don't actually HAVE a husband.)

Wouldn't have anything else...

Perhaps you can try to identify the birds you see among the trees & look up what to feed them. Having said that, I put up a finch feeder(thistle) 2 months ago & the finches that visit my yard haven't found it. I put up a bird feeder 10 years ago & I got not only birds but rats. That's why I'm trying the thistle/finch feeder(it's not supposed to attract rats) Maybe a humming bird feeder would bring faster results. In California there are other birds that drink from hummingbird feeders(including orioles & finches). Good luck!

@molizard I have a hummingbird feeder on my front window and a seed feeder on my back window! It's crazy, because I see lots of birds around...I think maybe they just don't feel safe coming up to the window, which is why I was wondering what people's window-feeder experience was...

Actually, the bird I see the most around here are crows. Ugh. =(

Hi there, maybe change up the food you have in the feeder? We had several feeders that I put out when we first moved into this house and nothing would visit them. I bought some new seed without even thinking and put it in ~ they came out in full force! Not thinking, I bought the old seed again and the feeders were bare ~ I definitely notice more birds around when I have the right food. (so much that we can go through 1 bag of food a week. .. . I had to add onto the grocery budget to include bird food LOL)

Hi! I've never had a window feeder, but I put up my first feeder, a finch feeder, in a tree about 15 feet from my front door. I had never seen finches in my neighborhood, but I chose a finch feeder because I was told the nyjer seed would not attract squirrels or rats. It took WEEKS for my first bird to show up, and then 2 weeks more before I saw groups on it. Now I have 2 feeders, and I have to fill them up every week! I don't know where you are, but in my area, the people at my local "Wild Birds Unlimited" store are very helpful. They told me to tie a yellow ribbon on the tree to attract the finches. There are probably other little tricks for other types of birds.

Hope you have some takers soon!

You need to find out what birds are in your area and what they eat first off. Also if there are reflections ect from the windows they might be scared off. They dont like cats either....normally I think bird feeders are put out in the open so they feel safe,ie can not be ambushed by a cat ect....and loads of patience for them to find the feeder.....good luck!
