I started my 365 this January. In February, I had 7 images chosen for the Popular Page, 2 in March, and 4 in April, and none since. I love this project, and feel my photography is improving due to shooting daily. However, I haven't been commenting as much as I would like to. Do you think being chosen is dependant on how active a member is on this site?
Or, am I shooting less desirable images?
I don't want to get caught up in the popularity aspect of this site, but it does help me see what type of images appeal to people. It also gives me a confidence boost, and helps to grow my friends and followers.
Any comments are much appreciated! Thanks to everyone for sharing with me. I get an amazing amount of inspiration from this site!!
From what I've read on the forums (awhile ago) I believe part of the criteria is 10 comments or more. I think number of views factors in as well.
I've yet to make the popular page. I stated January first, but haven't been able to contribute to the 365 community as much as I'd like, due to work and a busy home life. While I'd love to see one of my images there, I am proud that I've been able to keep this going and personally feel that I am learning and growing as a photographer.
Ive noticed that people can make it for various reasons. There is speculation that its due to the number of views, comments, or faves your shot may get. But personally I believe its all at the magic monkeys descretion. Ive seen shots on the Pop Page that have only a few comments and no faves. It really all just depends. There is no way to control if & how often your shot will make it on the page.
Remember not to compete with your self and just enjoy the project and your work. If you get to consumed by the pop page and perfection of a shot this project may lose its whole purpose for you. This is just my opinion though and hope it helps ya.
@brooketallman Brooke, you have some great images!! @shortperson2002 Caren, thanks for your comments. I do try to not get consumed with the popularity aspect, as I agree, it can lose the purpose for me. Just wondering how it works, but as @buccigrossi Brian says, it is the magic monkies!!
It's totally the monkeys. I mean, if you get a lot of comments right off, and a couple of favs, your chances are good, but it doesn't always work out that way. Try not to let getting on the pop page rule you...I fall into that sometimes, but really, when you look at the amount of people here, all the talent and creativity, how can we ALL be represented for every exceptional photo we post. And, as I've said before in another post, my pop photos have either a fox, dead leaves, or a cat face in them. I try not to limit myself to those three things though...that'd be awfully stifling creatively speaking. LOL
i just think the popular page is really useful for finding new people to follow. I never check to see if any of my pictures are on it, but instead I check to see what other people have been posting; I have found pretty much all of the people I follow from browsing the popular page and it shows a great variety of photos.
I don't feel the need to know how it works, I'm just happy it's there! :)
@axel i guess it really is just the monkeys then! i thought i read something a few months back about some calculation between a minimum number of comments and favs or something, but i could be mistaken.
to be honest, i very rarely go to the popular page anymore. i have enough trouble trying to find time to take photos, edit them, upload and view photos from the people i follow.
I personally would love to see a couple of my pictures show up on the PP page. I've had one thus far and I started in January. I think it's all luck. The one that made the popular page, got faved several times the first day. I would imagine that's a key, monkeys or no monkeys.
Sometimes it seems like that for me, but I have also seen some people who don't follow anyone or very few people and only post once in a blue moon will make the pp. I think it is a combination of views, favs, and comments. I also think the more you comment the more others know that you and your photos exist, but if they are that good then naturally they are going to get a lot of attention and go to the pp.
Thirteen images on the Popular Page since January is bloody good going! I've had one, throughout my whole project, and I've been doing it for two years now.
At the end of the day, it doesn't much matter, does it? Shoot photos for yourself - and if anyone likes 'em, it's a nice bonus.
lucky for you to be on pop page! i can only dream of getting there. In the meantime, i have to enjoy my project and worry about being popular later. =)
I'm in my 2nd year of 365. I remember the first time I got on the PP, one of my friends had to tell me because i didn't even know about it. For awhile i was on there almost daily. Sometimes the day's offering from both my albums was on simultaneously. Then last October, the formula must have changed and I have been chosen only once or twice. The whole thing is so capricious I have given up trying to figure it out. And I suggest you do the same.
It used to be my sole ambition to get on the popular page. And then I did, I've had two photos featured on the popular page -- within two days of each other. Two photos in 9 months isn't a lot. Also, they were both about fruit. *shrug*
I accomplished my goal -- I made the PP. My goal was never to make the PP with every shot. Sure, it was a thrill at first. It boosted my confidence. But now I've done it and it's time to move on as a photographer. Although, I do check the PP every day for new ideas.
Anyway, it is what it is. I'm glad I made the PP, but I'm certainly not going to shoot fruit for every photo for the rest of my project. =)
Thanks EVERYONE for your comments!! This project really is for myself, and I have to not worry about how popular my images are. The feedback I get from others is really what matters the most. I follow those that entirely inspire me - and this is so valuable. I think the self-critic in me worries I'm not doing as good as I was. I'll leave it to the magic monkeys, remember "it is what it is", and just enjoy this amazing photographic journey!
Thanks again - you guys are the BEST!!
@mackena - I'e been here for 6 months and make a lot of comments, but only ever had one picture (that I didn't think was all that great) turn up on the popular page. I am pretty pleased if someone marks my photo as a favorite though! I still keep trying to get a pic back on the popular page! It would be nice to see a second.
Everyone here is wondering who are the magic monkeys who choose the pictures on the Popular Page... Well I can tell you they're 3. One doesn't look at the photos, the other one doesn't listen to his buddy's comments and the last one doesn't say what he thinks about the pictures. So this is the reason why we'll never understand how photos pops on the PP!
@parisouailleurs thanks - your comment is the perfect way to sum up this thread!! I needed the chuckle. And, thanks to everyone for their comments. Yup, Marlene, just keep on shooting and enjoying the journey with all you talented photographers!!
@5unflow3r And answering myself that I truly don't know anything about how the popular page works. My photo from yesterday, California Poppies, made the page with nary a fave. Like I said before, what do I know? Thanks Magic Monkeys.
