protecting pictures

July 12th, 2011
Can someone please tell me how to protect my pictures so when someone right clicks to copy and save them, they can't??? I'm thinking of starting a webpage of some of my photos and I want to be able to protect them. Thank you, and if this has been discussed before I'm sorry for repeating it!! :) Della

*** I know I also need a watermark....need suggestions on that too if anyone can help :) I'm very much an amateur!! :) THANK YOU!!! ****

There really is no surefire way to do so. Use lightboxes, for one thing [the black page that comes up with the photo-you can't save from there]. But where there's a will, there's a way. I've used screen shots to copy things I wasn't supposed to, so I'm sure others will have the same idea. Good luck!

The only problem is that, even if you disable the right click, they can still get your picture by doing a screen shot. If it's on the internet it's out there. Put a watermark across the main point of your picture so they can't cut it out, and it will keep them from using it without giving you credit.
That's all I know...
I just recently saw something about this on another website. www.soulographer.com
Hope this helps a little...

It's done with javascript. You can find an example of it here -- http://javascript.internet.com/page-details/no-right-click.html

But it's browser based protection which isn't really effective. I have a javascript bookmark that re-enables right click, for sites that disable right click. And even easier than that, you can just take a screen shot of the page if someone wanted to get your image. Disabling right click just encourages people to try to take the image. The best thing to do is keep the images relatively low resolution, and have a small watermark on it. (Don't go crazy with the watermark, it can become really distracting)

@triciaanddazzle @derapsj @sudweeks thank you soo much!! :) Another reason why I love 365 is how generous everyone is with advice and help!! :)

if you are good with edit programs, you can edit watermarks out..
@derapsj .
I would say that if its a photo you dont want copied then dont put it on the net..
like Josh says,, watermarks can be a pain. and ruin your shot if placed in the wrong spot.. :)

i agree with Nikkers, the only way is not to post them. there are always hacks around all blocked methods. watermarks can take away from the image.

@nikkers @cchambers thank you!!

I just use a watermark and place it somewhere that would make it obvious if it was removed. I don't care about it "ruining" a photo online unless I'm getting paid for it :)

I can't say much more than what's been said. Check out http://www.soulographer.com/watermark-your-images/ like @derapsj said, for some (what I think is) good advice regarding how best to use watermarks.

I will say that the photos on my own website are not watermarked. But, they've all been paid for by the clients already! And if anyone tries to pass them off as their own, I'll just sue them to hell and back. :D

Amy
Put a copyright watermark on the photograph wherever you see fit and then on the site that you choose to house them on, be sure to put up your copyright notice. That way, if someone does "steal" your image, you have a solid base of protection for your images.

I have it listed twice on my site, at the bottom and on the right - you can see which you prefer ~ http://assessionsphotography.wordpress.com/

Remember it does happen ...I still never got a penny for this but then it was one of Rupert Murdoch's papers that stole it ..

@dmrams I emailed the picture editor at the sun when it was brought to my attention by a friend of mine who purchased the paper that day (i dont buy newspapers myself) i got a standard " we will get back to you in due coarse letter " i heard nothing so 6 weeks later i billed them for £250 for use of my image without permission ,,, & i am still waiting; ..I suppose i should have taken them to court , but you know the hassle was just too much .. & i just put it down to experiance now & like the others say any pictures that i want for myself i dont put on the net without a copy right mark (which i know can still be removed) ... so any that are really specail i dont post at all to be on the safe side.. dont suppose it will happen to me again this was a chance in a million picture , but you never know ..(0;
