Hi everyone

August 30th, 2011
Sorry I haven't been about. Hopefully this is me back.

But since I'm here saying hello, I could use some advice. Sneaky eh? lol.

I am noticing that my shots from my camera are really dull and boring. I'm using jpeg format. I'm constantly editing to brighten them up. They always look fine on screen until I put them on the pc. Any other photo I view of others on the pc are fine so I know it's not the monitor (although I do think it may need calibrated anyway).

What I'm wondering is is this normal? I can't remember it being that way before but the light lately has been poor as it's so drab outside. If you want to see a before and after shot I took today I'll post it on here to see.

Your photos look good to me - nice and bright. Are you shooting mid-day? My photos tend to look rather dull (overexposed) when I shoot in the middle of the day. I'm trying to shoot earlier in the morning or later in the day. That may help. But, it looks like you are doing good on your processing in my opinion.

@mackena I've edited them to brighten them up. I did read somewhere how a DSLR makes images dull and flat but I really don't remember it being that bad when I first got the camera. Maybe I just need to try it on a nice sunny day to see how they go.

Sorry for bombarding you with photos. Just thought I'd fill up some days I took shots when I've not been here. I know I'm going to bore you all.

You can always raise the saturation in the camera settings. I have mine or +1 or +2 depending on what I'm shooting and the available light.

@5unflow3r

Sorry, I'm a dunce. How do I change the saturation? My camera is a Canon 450d / rebel xsi

I would recommend shooting in RAW, then edit and then convert back to JPeg. Also try full manual mode play around with settings use examples on here (exif info) to get basic settings from different shots this will help u to understand your camera's settings better

@griff

I've used manual from the word go and think I know it but then again, I must be missing something. I do notice the colours on the college pentax cameras to be better.

I used to shoot RAW but went back to Jpeg. It really depended on which editing software I was using . Also didn't like not being able to see my photos first and for some reason when I set my camera to both RAW and Jpeg, all I get is jpeg, no RAWs. Grrrrrrr. I may have to go back to RAW but it really depends on what I'm shooting and how many shots I intend to take I suppose.

Thanks

Is your white balance off? Maybe it is too cool?

I always tweak the saturation, don't think this can be avoided.
And I'm glad you're back!

@shadesofgrey I was playing about with that later last night and you know I think that was exactly the problem. My photos were fine today once I set it properly. I had it on auto yesterday. Grrrr at me, lol.
