wide angle lens

September 13th, 2011
I have a Sony @380. It came with a 18-55 lens. My boss said if I could get a lens that would take the pics he needs he would buy it for me. So if I stand where I need to be I get about 8 feet wide in the pic when using the 18. I need another 1-2 feet wide. Then the hieght is about 8 feet. Any suggestions what might do that? 3-4 feet back i need to get a 8h x 10w cabinet. Cant turn down free equipment but it has to do the job. Thanks for any ideas.

Have a look at a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5. You won't believe how wide this lens can go! I love mine :-)

@michellepj @sburbidge I am actually eyeing a wide angle myself and wanted to see if you had any feedback. I am looking at a Tamron AF 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 (I am watching a used one on eBay). I had looked at a Sigma but I read some reviews that said that the edges got really soft and that it was hard to correct without cropping... Did you look at Tamron and go with Sigma? I wouldn't mind getting a Nikkor but I can't justify the cost and I have loved my Tamron 60mm macro lens.

I have a tokina wide angle and love it. Don't know if it is made to go with a Sony, though. Sooo...I'm probably not helping much here. This was taken from about 7 or 8 ft away, though, if that helps with showing how wide it goes.

check out www.borrowlenses.com I am renting a wide angle lens from there to decide if I really want one before spending the money. I also read a couple articles on how best to use a wide angle lens that makes me feel more confident on how to get the best photo.

@autumnseden depending on timing I may still have the lens for my olympus on Saturday the 15th of October.

@laceyjogautreau awesome- I am not sure he would pay for the Sigma but this would be great. @brumbe Thank you - If I cant find one he would buy for me this would be a great option. For other lenses too. Great idea!

@brumbe I would be interested in seeing one to play with! I am watching one on eBay right now that was at 135 yesterday and is up to 175 today with 2 days to go. I doubt it will be a winner for me but you never know! Odder things have happened. I just can't stomach the $1k price tag! But it would be 10 kinds of awesome for the coast and Tahoe and Yosemite and and and... I really can't complain though. I am thrilled to have an SLR finally and am doubly thrilled to have already been able to swing getting my macro lens (a MUST) and my speedlight. Thankfully I am selling enough portraits to help offset my cost! Woohoo!!! =D I do believe I am officially living the dream... My photos are paying for my gear. =D

here are some of the photos. Also for all sunny photos I used a polarizer to get a bit of a less washed out color.
