I need a release form for my own pictures!

October 3rd, 2011
I took some pictures of my daughter for her senior portraits and then had one of them edited online. I uploaded it to have one printed locally to see how it came out in print. The store called and asked if I had a release form and is hesitant to print them up. She said I could come in with the camera and memory card for them to confirm that I took the picture. But I have already taken them off my card and loaded them into my Memory Manager program. Anyone else ever run into this problem. If I transfer the picture back to my memory card, would that work for proof?

all you need to do is make a proof of print rights, i made one for my customers and i put their name on it and it has a short paragraph stating that they have all print rights then i sign it on the bottom, if you google "print rights" you can find a bunch of versions and kind of reword them to fit your needs

I never heard of that in my country, I think it is very uncommon, and think you can try that so what does it proof than.

@lbaker That's a big compliment :) Congrats! I know it's frustrating but still it's a good thing too :)

@zonnestraaltje it's for copyright protection.
@terek55 I did kind of smile to myself while on the phone with her.
@brandywalker365 @asrai I'll google it and check into that and check out that link.

if you have them on cd that should be fine as well otherwise ask to speak to the manager.

@canon4life I did speak with the manager. And she did say I could bring in a Cd. But I was kind of under the impression that It should have the photographer's name on it.

For sure I'd just move to another printers, there's hundreds online and in real life and you shouldn't really have to prove they're yours. I'd thank them and take my business elsewhere, printing is so frickin expensive anyway they should bend over. If it keeps happening I'd buy a printer I got an amazing one for £35 ($60). I hate rules and pedantic Bureaucracy fascists though, so other people might say different. ;)

This happened to a friend of mine. She took it to Walmart and they thought the photo was 'good' so they needed proof that it was hers and she didn't steal it from someone.

Consider it a complement.

(The rest of this is if you are in the US - I don't know about any place else.) Many places actually have a form you can fill out as a copy right waiver. You can also just create something for yourself. You need a printed document saying that you took the photos so you own the copyrights to the photo's you are trying to print and because off that you have the rights to print them. Most of the time you have to have some description of those pictures. The document must be signed and dated. Once you present them with this document - they shouldn't need proof.

The reason the stores have to do this is because of the copyright laws in the US. They are terrified of printing something copyrighted and being dragged into a lawsuit. The fines are horrendous and most clerks are told that even they can be personally sued for printing something accidentally. A manager isn't normally going to be able to help much because it has to do with Federal law not store policy.

Hope you able to get you photos printed soon and hope this helps some.

I definitely would consider ordering from an online, professional printer. I use ProDPI (prodpi.com, of course), and when you first sign up not only do they give you a huge bunch of samples of the things they print and your photo paper options, but you also get 5 free 8x10s. The quality is amazing, as well. This is where I'm ordering my baby brother's senior photos from.
