Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with Jinx during his stay in Brisbane. Firstly I would like to say thanks so soooo much to Jinx, thank you :) … thanks for taking time out from your nightly Kindle-bonding time to grab some coffee with me, wander around the beautiful Southbank Parklands, and generally mentor me until my heart was content … my brain then frazzled by all the new skills, ideas, titbits and tricks newly acquired. And THEN you say to me “what can I help you with, what do you want to know?” Very cool indeed!

Just so you all know, I have now learned some cool little tricks on my camera, one of which, in hindsight, probably made me look a little blonde d’oh lol as I could have just read the book and figured out the eye-focusing little doovy-thingo lol…. I learned lots about light, shading, portraiture, utilising actual lights and a couple cool flash techniques, and quite a bit about editing hehehe, like I wasn’t going to hit him up with editing questions bwaaahahaha ;-)) we also talked about software, how he manages wedding packages, etc … and well we pretty much touched on it all in some way (given the opportunity, Tadii WILL ask lots of questions haha). I’m just glad Jinx is the type of person who is genuinely happy to let others in on the knowledge and learn more about the amazing world of photography.

During the course of the evening I also learned that this man quite literally lives and breathes photography, and has done so since he was a child when he was given his grandfather’s old Leica, then getting his first paying wedding gig at age 15. He takes photos in his day job literally every day, then chooses to take photos on all the other days in his own business, and then somewhere in between that manages a to have time for family and provides a great contribution to this site also. I have never seen someone who spends a huge majority of their life with a camera in hand, who still has that childish enthusiasm and endless energy at the very thought of his next shot coming into view. I barely had to ask anything and Jinx was “oh I’ll show you how to make this light work for the shot” or “put this lens on your camera and I’ll teach you about aperture” (that was my favourite part … temporarily ‘owning’ the heavy and expensive lens on MY camera hahaha) … but alas that part had to end as he had more shots to do with it safely back on his own camera lol.

And to cap the evening off, as if on queue, there was a parade of what seemed like a couple thousand people who had gathered, with their pretty coloured lanterns, for a walk along the riverside at Southbank in support of Leukaemia. And of course Jinx says “oh now there’s a good shot, with the lanterns on the S bend along the pathway” etc … which I had already noticed myself, so I’m obviously on the right track to getting good/better shots. So there we stood, up on a tree bed snapping pics of all the people … and I am certainly proud to say that my shots didn’t look all that bad compared to Jinx’s. Yay for me ;-)

So, I have some Jinx shots, Jinx has some Tadii shots, and I’m sure we’ll both edit them and each approve in turn which can be published haha….stay tuned. In the mean time I will try to post one of the lantern ones that I took later on today.

Again, big thanks for a great time Jinx :))

@taidster - Does that work on a Mac?
October 6th, 2011
@bobfoto hahaha pfft like i'd know haha. but i'm sure there's something that does it equally :P
October 6th, 2011
@taidster Can I just point out something ... you mention all these wonderful things about my other half (great, send him home with a swelled head! Thanks!) but I bet he didn't tell you that our son is almost 21 months old and he only JUST edited and printed two newborn photos of him for our wall ... I've only been harassing my inbuilt professional photographer for 21 months :P

It's like living with a mechanic - car won't work ... a chef - won't cook at home ... a painter - own house has paint peeling off everywhere! Married a photographer - bug him constantly to finish the non-client photo job ;)

@jinximages

@koshi Hahaha!!! So typical. ;-)
October 7th, 2011
@koshi hehehe i love taht you tagged him .... another reminder huh ;-)

and no ... he totally didn't mention anything along those lines. tisk tisk jinx, and even after i was telling you about how my son was five months old before he ever had a photo taken .... and koshi, i do know how it feels not to have those photos etc ... it sounds like such a hectic world there for you guys lol...i'm exhausted at the thought.

ps sorry about the swelled head haha, maybe you can go on strike as a "mumma" until the photos are up on the wall hehehe... :p

Thanks for all the kudos Tadii! It was as much a pleasure for me, truly! I just wished we'd longer to shoot. :)

Wasn't that parade something else?! Right on cue. ;)

I'm in the process of trying to fix my computer (AppleCare are being very good - the technicians who "fixed" the hardware issue would not want to show their faces anytime soon, however) so it might be a while before I can catch up and look at those photos. I have just under 30000 more photos to recatalog...

I certainly look forward to catching up again next time I'm down that way!
