What time works best?

October 11th, 2011
I've been really shocked at how low my view numbers have been lately. I have 268 followers, but am only seeing view numbers in the mid to upper 20s. These low numbers seem rather extreme, and I was wondering if it has to do with the time of day that photos are uploaded. Or could it be that people are just so busy with the day-to-day things that they don't spend as much time on here as they used to? I know I'm guilty of uploading my photos and then having to leave the site because I'm being pulled in a dozen different directions at one time. After 283 days of the project, has the novelty worn off? So, I'd like to see another discussion on this topic?

What are your thoughts?
What time of day are you likely to be on 365?
What time of day are you likely to upload your photos?
Do you think the longer you've been doing the project, the less time you spend on it?

More recently (past two/three months) I have been spending more time on 365 than I used to when I first started in January. I mostly upload pictures when I get home from college - around half 3 then stay on 365 looking at various discussions and comps etc till about 4. Perhaps other people simply are too busy and are pulled in a dozen directions like you are??

It is a mystery to me. Sometime I get a large number of looks and not comments. It seems like people just do not comment on other photos, and it is very frustrating. I would like to get tips on some of my photos do not get any because people just are not looking at them. Sometimes I think it is the time of day. I have feeds set up to look at photos because if I did not, I would miss many of them on the home page.

I know what you mean, I generally end up uploading my photos quite late at night (UK) and get quite a few comments from my friends and followers in Australia but not so much locally. As you gather more followers and you follow more people you do get so many photos that sometimes it is impossible to comment on them all, I tend to scan through and comment on the ones that really "hit" me, I always feel a bit guilty but as midnight approaches.... As for your last comment, the more time I have been doing the project the MORE time I spend on it!! I am truly fascinated, not only both other 365 ers photographs but also all the fascinating information you get about different parts of the world and different lives. - I think I'm addicted!

What are your thoughts? I think that posting in the morning (USA mountain time) is the best. That is when I get the mosts views and comments. I think that it also depends on how far down are your posts in your queue and other people's queues

What time of day are you likely to be on 365? Morning and Evening

What time of day are you likely to upload your photos? Morning, before leaving for work.

Do you think the longer you've been doing the project, the less time you spend on it? Yes. When you follow so many people, you get into comment/viewing overload, miss days, etc. I started on Jan 1 of this year. I thought about quitting on a number of occasions, and then out of the blue, I get on the popular page. My wife has been encouraging me to stick to it.

I don't think the time of day really makes a difference. I tend to get the same number of views regardless of whether I post in the morning or the evening. I think it's just "that time of year"; people are running out of steam. My views have gone down from an average of about 25 to around 10. I don't think there are fewer people viewing them, rather I think people are scrolling through the thumbnails on their home pages and only clicking on the photos that really grab their attention, where as before they may have been clicking on each photo on their list. Or not... who knows?

@dejongdd I am usually on here in the evening. I have discovered that the more followers you get results in more comments to respond to and pictures to look at. So when you take this into consideration sometmes people will find it hard to respond to everyone

I'm finding that as my schedule gets busier, I'm uploading at random times and it makes no odds to views. What DOES make a massive difference is if I don't comment on my faithful followers shots for 3ish days in a row...!! I am spending as much time as I can buit maybe not as much as 2-3 months back and therefore the following is less because I comment less! I try to mix up the list of people I follow in a single evening by say backtracking 4-5 days instead of just looking a yesterdays shot. This way the people who aren't on my home page thread (due to posting time differences) still stay current in my mind. Some days I'll pick a random high view day from last month and comment that way - I often find people I've not seen for a while (like yourself a few days back!!)

My views have also plummeted and generally I'm now lucky to get 10 a day. As Juliette says I think commenting on followers pictures does impact on views and I'm sure my lack of commenting has added to my low views. Of course the lack of time to spend getting a great shot and therefore some decidely dodgy pictures of late probably won't have helped me either :) I do feel guilty for my lack of commenting but with 2 young children, work and uni i Just really dont have the time at the moment.

Mine have been like that for a while now. I thought that maybe it was because of summer and everyone was spending more time outside, but it hasn't really picked up now that it's cooler. I'm guilty for not going through and commenting as much as I should. I guess so is everyone else!

I've uploaded at night (EST in the US) and found that I had more comments. I guess it depends on where your followers are from and what time of day they tend to comment.

Also, I'm in year 2 of my Project and am spending far less time on it than I was in year 1. (I'm taking less photos, yes, but also don't have the time to comment like I used to. I hate posting if I don't have the time to reciprocate. And lately, I just don't have the time to reciprocate.)
Are you commenting on other people's photos? I do find the more you comment, the more comments you get.

Personally I've been busy with life stuff all year. Last autumn was when I could spend most time on here and that meant I commented on and viewed a lot more pictures at that time which tended to correspond with having more views and comments on my own pictures.

My viewings are about the same as yours. I don't think the time of day makes a big difference. I guess everyone who started at the beginning of the year has more followers and follow more people now and can't view everyone's pic.

I don't think it's relevant to what time you post, surely it's on the basis of how interested your followers are in to viewing the picture or not. I.e if they don't click on it, you won't get a view they must only view it as a thumbnail on their home page. At the same time it also has to be considered some of your followers may have dropped off and no longer take part. I follow a fair amount and don't always click on every single photo, depends if it catches the eye or not but I'm sure you're not the only one only get small percentage of view compared with the number of followers.

I dont think the time of day has anything to do with the number of responses. Over time, friends/followers drop off the site but their accounts stay active and add to the friend/follower count. Also, there are lots of people who only want to look at the pics and not take the time to comment, which is fine. I focus on those folks who I've come to know as friends and view comment on others as [healthy wrist] time permits. When life gets busy and I don't get a chance to stay up to date with viewing others' pics, my true followers stay in touch and I appreciate that very much.

I normally only get time after 8pm to take photos. And then I upload at about 10pm. At that time I do not have a lot of time or energy to look at all of the photos. As someone mentioned, I browse through the thumbnails and only open those that grab my attention.

EDIT: I live in South Africa and its already 10pm

What are your thoughts?
It really has less to do with time of day and more one's... participation. In my opinion

What time of day are you likely to be on 365?
I'm not :)

What time of day are you likely to upload your photos?
I don't :)

Do you think the longer you've been doing the project, the less time you spend on it?
Guess so.
October 11th, 2011
i agree that I think it depends far more on your participation than the time of day. That has been my experience. The more I comment, the more people reciprocate. Also, for me, it has much easier only uploading one photo at a time, in general.

Here are my thoughts for what they are worth...

What time of day are you likely to be on 365?
any chance I get to have 5 minutes to myself - could be any time

What time of day are you likely to upload your photos?
Well, lunchtime or early afternoon usually, but having said that, my lunchtime in NZ is probably your middle of the night.

Do you think the longer you've been doing the project, the less time you spend on it?
No, I still spend the same amount of time if I am able, I am trying to juggle it with 4 kids, work and keeping my home sorted so its not easy!

I still comment quite alot, I don't have a huge amount of followers and not that many people comment on my photos, but having said that, I really appreciate the people who do comment, and I really do this for me, not for the hope of comments- though they are VERY nice to receive!

I try to keep up but life has gotten in the way. I have noticed with my photos, some views have become less but I figure it is life and I wondered since I become an ace member with more photos, it takes away from the only one I was posting? I don't know, but I try to comment on everyone I follow but I have found that sometimes I miss something, but catch it later. I hate to miss the wonderful work everyone shares!!!
