Polarizing Filter?

October 11th, 2011
I'll be going to Arches National Park pretty soon and wanted some sort of polarizing filter for my camera, so that the sky and all the colors will be vivid. I'm kind of new to this stuff so I'm not sure exactly which kind to buy. I have the Canon Rebel T1i with the kit lens (I'm a highschool student so I haven't scraped together enough money for a new one haha!). I've done a little research and see that these filters can run in the hundreds, but I'm looking for one maybe around $30? Any advice or recommendations would be really helpful thank you!

Here's some examples:

I picked up my Hoya a couple of years back for about $50 Canadian.

If you can afford one, it's a great tool to have in the bag.

Here's my recent example.

I just bought a polarizing filter this weekend and paid $149 for it. On top of that, I had to buy an adapter ring for both of my lenses at $8 each AND the bracket that holds the filter for $15.Yikes! You may want to think about a graduated neutral density filter (I could have bought that for $15). I opted for the polarizer because if fit my needs better. Here is a link that might help you decide which filter best fits your needs.

Have a great time at Arches National Park! It is one of my favorite of all the national parks I've been to. I wish I could go with you!

Just an aside...if you don't want to drop the moola to buy a new lens just yet, there are several websites where you can rent a lens for a few days/weeks.

The simplest ofilter to use is a circular polarising filter - it just screws straight into the front of your lens. I bought a new one for each of my lenses on e-bay, they're not the best, but I didn't pay more than £5 sterling for any of them.

@shadesofgrey I am renting a wide angle, teleconvertor and tripod this week. It really is a great service, especially if you just want vacation shots.

@refriedradio It really does great things, but test it out prior to going on vacation so you get the hang of it. I also recommend for really bright days that you look at a Neutral Density Filter to cut some of the brightness down.

Thank you all for your very helpful comments! Since I don't want to drop a lot of money on this yet, I think I'm going to go with something like this for the time being. Thanks! :)
