Black List?

November 14th, 2011
Anyone else out there feel like they are on the black list? Today the top 20 came out and I feel I was deliberately not included! (Tooth Fairy) I am really not the whiny type so this is a little out of character for me! I know the the monkeys at 365 are very random when it comes to the pop page but the top 20 has always been pretty consistent...I thought! Has anyone ever had more favs and views than the top slot of the top 20 and not had their pic appear anywhere on the chart? Please let me know so I can just regard this as another monkey choice not a true top 20!
November 14th, 2011
I know what you mean! lol. But I think it's more than just number of favs and views... I'm sure it also has to do with (possibly...) favs-to-views ratio, the number of followers you have, how quickly you accumulate the favs/views... etc.

It's definitely frustrating and I have felt those same feelings, but I don't think it has anything to do with your photos - just how the stats happened to stack up on that particular time and day.
November 14th, 2011
Jerry, it's funny you mention this, because I was just showing my husband your tooth fairy shot and thought, surely this made the top 20 and when I looked, you weren't there!!!???? I didn't quite understand this, because your shot sooooo deserves it, but I have noticed, the monkeys are very random! I have been disappointed in the past too and just chalk it up to the randomness.
I think your photography is awesome and sure look forward to seeing more!
November 14th, 2011
@pocketmouse Your making me feel better already! Thanks, Teresa!
@exposure4u I wasn't sure I even wanted to mention it! Thank you for your response, Wendy!
November 14th, 2011
I do think it has to do with ratios. I don't usually follow it, but someone pointed out I'd made the top 20 (just barely I think), and I'm sure I had something like 80 views and 20-30 favs. You have a lot of favs, but a TON of views, maybe having so many followers waters down the ratio of favs to views? 54 favs and 500 views, I wouldn't worry about it :) They're only monkeys.
November 14th, 2011
Not sure how it works as I've never got close to getting on the Top 20 but I thought your pic was very cool if that helps at all :)
November 14th, 2011
@orangecrush Hey Jerry, your Tooth Fairy shot rocks!! I showed it to my boys and they were seriously impressed too. As for not making the Top 20, it has happened quite a few times to me too. The most recent one was my colourful hut shot from the 31 Oct - it got more favs than the number 1 shot that week but wasn't in the Top 20. It doesn't worry me in the slightest, though. I usually get more comments when a shot lands up there and I struggle to keep up with commenting back, so I constantly feel guilty. You're an incredible photographer, don't let those magic monkeys get you down! :)
November 14th, 2011
I have noticed something similar. I had a shot in the top ten of the top 20 wich wasn't even on my personal top ten and then last week I suddenly had a shot replace my former nr. 1 in my personal top ten that was then on place 18 or something of the 20 and I thought it would be higher up and didn't understand the logic. Of course, I was happy to be there at all as it doesn't happen often for me but it does seem weird. I LOVED your tooth fairy shot though!
November 14th, 2011
You take some brilliant shots, Jerry, but with a site like this (where it is mostly about community and support for art), why is there such importance put on the top 20 or the PP? As long as you see your work as "Top 20 worthy"....it's all good. :)
November 14th, 2011
I think it's skewed towards newcomers - the number of favourites as a ratio that favours fewer views and fewer followers. On the popular page, if you look you either have people who have a lot of followers who fave a lot or people who are new - occasionally a brilliant photo pops out of nowhere, but it's rare.
November 14th, 2011
Jerry...I just knew this was going to happen...In fact I nearly posted 2 days ago to say that the ALGORITHM HAD STUFFED YOU. Because everyone who looked at that photo loved it so much, they kept going back and looking at it. When the kids next door came they viewed it again...and when their partners came home they showed it to them.

I'm pretty sure the algorithm does something like views/comments/favs So when we all gave you a million views, but only commented once and could only fave once it makes the algorithm think that you are getting a heap of views but only about 20% comments and favs.

I hope I explained that...because the first minute I looked at that shot I knew it was No 1 and the next day when I looked again (yes...I'm one of them...) I knew we had doomed you @orangecrush
November 14th, 2011
I made the Top 20 this week, I might add for the first time and I won't lie to you I was chuffed. I do look at the popular page and think myself incredibly lucky to be included. There was so many outstanding photos this week and none better than your Tooth Fairy shot Jerry. Can't work out the logic of those darn monkeys but it doesn't seemed to be aimed at anyone in particular. There is a lot of fine photographers here and none moreso than yourself. The number of fav's tell you you have a lot of people in your corner, so why worry what the monkeys think!
November 14th, 2011
Just had a look at your picture. Love it, good job! I, too, thought with such numbers of favs and views, your pic would make it to the top 20. So, now I discover that the top 20 is not really about top 20 pics. I knew the PP were more random, but had no idea about the top 20.
Anyway, I don't know why I didn't follow you earlier, but I'll do now, because I love your work. It's very creative and clever.
November 14th, 2011
Oh Jerry... Popularity comes at a price darling :) Its the law of mathematics.. How we hit the PP or Top 20 depends on the ratios of the views / followers / comments & faves.. The more followers we gain the harder it becomes, the more views we gain the harder it becomes.. unless they fave the photo.. and that my dear is what counts on here. Jerry you are just going to have to suck it up and realise your fame at times maybe getting in the way of the awards ;)

I know, it sucks, I am sure a few of us have experienced this with a photo we thought was worthy... But it will make next time you hit the big 20 even more satisfying ;o)

November 14th, 2011
I've often wondered how the top 20 is worked out. I almost started a thread a few weeks ago regarding the fact that there were about four people appearing twice in the top 20. I wasn't ever expecting to appear myself but did think that others had missed out due to this fact. However Jerry @orangecrush, I do think it's important to get a perspective. When we start with a few followers we're thrilled by comments, then it's amazing to get your first fav followed by an appearance on the popular page and to actually achieve a position on the top 20 is unbelievable. Remember you have loads of loyal followers who are astounded by your consistent brilliant photography :o) xx
November 14th, 2011
Because of this thread, I looked at the "Top 20" for the first time in about 8 months. I'm sure it's an honor to be there. I wouldn't know. But, honestly, I'm busy enough browsing the "rest of us" that I don't take time to look at somebody else's opinion of the "Top 20". My personal top 20 is what's important.
I'm not saying that I don't love the super stars! Of course I do! I get to see you on the popular page all the time. Have a wonderful day! Top 20 or not! :)
November 14th, 2011
I've had this happen to me a couple of times - and I think it also has to do with timings...I'm not sure if it applies in this case...if you post on the day that the top 20 appears (just before it appears) sometimes your favs count in the last week's top 20 and this week's top 20 ie split and then you sometimes end up having not enough to enter either week! I guess it's a problem with time differences and stuff - does that apply to this - I can't tell when you uiploaded - I seem to remember seeing it on the Friday but may be wrong. Even so, with that many favs I'm surprised it doesn't appear at all - it was fantastic!
November 14th, 2011
My "Top 20" are my awesome friends who always find time to comment on all of my pics no matter how crappy they are. I find real people more appealing than magic monkeys ;-)
November 14th, 2011
CK
I can't believe you are not there - you fab photo is defo in my top 20 this week if that helps? Can't fathom those monkeys - occasionally I will see one of my crap photos on pp and other times I think I have captured the best photo ever and it falls into the abyss:-)
I love your work, and only looked at the top 20 after this post. I will never be there and will not be surprised by that:-)
Keep up taking those favs!
November 14th, 2011
No experience here Jerry! I gave up on weekly theme, pop and top pages. I'm probably not interesting enough and don't follow enough other 365'ers to fav or view me :-) Don't have the time commenting more than great people I follow at the moment anyway....
November 14th, 2011
There are so many amazing photos on here and I do love yours Jerry. I was astounded to see I'd made top 20 for the 1st time and was so chuffed, because I just don't see my pics in the same 'class' as the ones that usually make the top spots. I love this community and the support I feel I get from people all over the world. It's a special place and those monkeys are just monkeying around for sure!!
November 14th, 2011
I'm just going to say it: I think the top 20, popular page, and the site in general are all centered around a certain type of photography. Happy, cutesy, some fantasy/heavily photoshopped, all beautiful types of shots are what is recognized. I think it's great, but I love other types of photography, too. I just feel our ideas of what is great photography is influenced by what we mostly see on here, and we think what's on the popular page is somehow 'better'. I guess my point is that I don't see the point in the popular page/top twenty because it's all skewed to promote a certain type of photo. But, Jerry, you are a well skilled and creative photographer, and I'm not trying to take away from that.
November 14th, 2011
I was just mentioning this yesterday to Michael Elliott - that with all the new influx of 365'ers it's getting harder and harder to put in an appearance on the pop page - 3 of my shots last week got nearly 20 fav's and not one of them made it on there. Which I am 100 percent cool with, except one of them was my shot of Pickle and I had set a silly goal for myself to get her up on the pop page one day, hence the reason for my disappointment in that case. BUT - I was rather astounded by the fact that your Tooth Fairy shot wasn't on there! It didn't make sense to me at all.
I'm of the opinion of @janmaki , I love the daily interactions with the peeps I've come to think of as friends on here (including yourself Jerry) and I know your shot deserved to be up there getting showcased in all it's glory:)
November 14th, 2011
@danig your shot on the Top 20 was amazeballs!
November 14th, 2011
Jerry, I normally do not check the list, but I went there to see what number the tooth fairy had gotten to. From the other comments, it points out the problem for trying to use a mathematical algorithm to pick the photos for the list. :(
November 14th, 2011
I wish the formula for that could be shared. I understand why PP can't be shared, people would try to beat the system. But if the top 20 is truly mathematical, there's no way to beat it so why can't we know?
As for your shot Jerry, it astounds me how many more faves and views it has than any single pic on that top 20. There have been times when I thought the numbers that my pictures had were close to the 19th or 20th on there and I was bummed I didn't squeak it out, but your numbers blow the other numbers away, hands down so I'm confused. I sure wish we knew why....
November 14th, 2011
Top 20?

I think I'd feel fortunate to have a shot have more than a couple of faves. My top faved photo has had 15 faves. My top viewed shot has around 200 views and that's only because it made the top five for a theme shot and it didn't even get a fave.

They're monkeys. ;-)
November 14th, 2011
There's no understanding the monkeys, Jerry! As an ace member, I can view my own stats and they don't make any sense to me - the shot with the most views, comments and faves is not my highest ranked shot. It seems to matter more how many followers you have, so Michelle hit the nail on the head! By the way, your photo rocks!
November 14th, 2011
@mikew Thanks, Michael. I really appreciate your feedback!
@sjodell Thank you so much, Sarah!
November 14th, 2011
@deens Thanks, Nadine! I also feel guilty when I can't keep up! I know the PP is a novel sort of thing and I don't even think about making it or not! The top 20 is a little different (I thought) because it always seemed factual. Now that I know there are more of us out there, I won't let this bother me!
November 14th, 2011
@jannaellen Thank you, Janna! Too bad! I guess they should call it, "Monkeys top 20"! I feel way better knowing I'm not alone!
November 14th, 2011
Oh I can sympathise with you.....very strange that your magical shot wasn't up there.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason for it.
It does seem weird at times when you get for instance 7 favs in 20 views that you don't get on to the PP. I found that with my shot from last week of THE AUSSIE ICON (my fly shot) got fav'd very quickly and ended up with 12 favs but it didn't hit the PP. The photo of one of my FRIENDS here on 365 that posted within 20 minutes of mine received 4 FAVS and was on the PP within 8 hours. The following day I got a further 12 FAVS on that pic but didn't hit the PP until 3 days later when I was suprised to see it there. I CANNOT work it out!!
But just to let you know I love your creativity and work and I look for your pic everyday as you've noticed this week when I've hounded you to get another up !!! LOL!!!

Keep it up Jerry!!!!
November 14th, 2011
@lacedxxoo I agree with you about the PP! The top twenty is a little different to me. Its not about the popularity or the ego boost but its more of an account of history. You can find any top twenty in the blog section from 1 to now and look back on all the amazing work from people that aren't even around anymore. To have this kind of kept record, I would think it would be a little more than a random monkey choice!
November 14th, 2011
yeah i had a pic on the PP, it was only on for 4 hours, others were on for a couple of days and mine had over 100 hits and 10 favs in that time, yet others that were on longer only had 20 hits?! - go figure?
November 14th, 2011
Jerry, I thought for sure that shot would be up there!! I don't get it either, but all of your shots are incredible!!! :o)
November 14th, 2011
Whats the Pop Page ? i've not been seen on that for a looooooong time now ..LOL.. & I have never been on the top ten list ...
When i started this 365 i don't think we had a top ten weekly page or a blog page & back then getting on the pop page was easier "not so many folks using the site two years ago" ..
Even with 1922 views & 107 favs my "crazy sneeze" picture was only on the pop page for a short time ..
Don't worry Jerry all your shots would make many a top ten shots, tooth fairy was superb.
I really don't view the PP anymore because i don't understand how it works at all ,the site is just so popular now that it cant be possible for the monkeys to keep up, you need a small troop of monkeys to stand a chance ..
November 14th, 2011
I have to say I have wondered the same thing. I think it's been ages since anything of mine made the popular page.
November 14th, 2011
Jerri I know what you mean and your tooth fairy shot is amazing, as well as many of your shots...but I have to agree with @janmaki. It is a privilige to be on there but i have learned it makes me happier when my followers appreciate what I have done rather than to try battling for a spot. You are a great talent!!!
November 14th, 2011
@orangecrush I'm not debating whether "the monkeys" or Ross himself chooses those photos. I'm just wondering why the idea of popularity is so important on this site. We all know this is a wonderful site for encouragement and that no matter how skilled you are, someone will always say something nice about what any of us post. I'm just making the point that at the end of the day, if your work makes YOU (and you alone) happy, then there isn't a reason for you (or anyone) to feel the need to stomp your feet when you don't get in the top 20. Take no offense to this, please. I just wish 365 would turn back into what it was when I started almost a year ago. No one made these kind of posts, it didn't feel like a constant need to be recognized was in order. The whole idea of this site, the way I've always understood it, is to record each day of your life for a year and improve your skills while being supported by a nice group of lovely people.
November 14th, 2011
@laceyjogautreau MMMMHMMMMM!!!!! we're the lacies.
November 14th, 2011
@lacedxxoo Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES. I've only been on here a little over two months, but I'm absolutely perplexed by all the whinging about views and faves and comments and popularity.
November 14th, 2011
I don't think Jerry was complaining about popularity - just more pointing out that the stats don't seem to add up. When I last viewed that shot, it had over 50 fav's on it. If that doesn't belong in the Top 20 - I don't know what does. And let's be honest, we all put a lot of effort into taking, editing, and posting these shots - a little recognition ain't so bad.
November 14th, 2011
@orangecrush your photography is ace...the photo in question is brilliant btw...its ironic you mentioned feeling snubbed..

.I think we all have those moments...I do artistic creative edits and love doing WWYD and keep trying to raise my own bar and there have been times I am amazed that it seems time after time a edit doesn't get listed as a top 5...have yet to win one of those and at times it can make one doubt themselves especially considering trying to break the mold and stand out and lose to sorry to say cliche or campy edits that have been done ad nausem.

It could be so easy to feel defeated or maybe ones art misunderstood? What does one do when feeling like that? I shrug it off and realize its just art and the desire to share it so I keep posting without any expectation or even comments...I just want to share and raise my own bar.

You are a fantastic photographer and your comments on my own project along with all the other brilliant photographers have helped me realize that I must be doing something right *means the world to me* and to not take it personal the times where a photo does not generate comments/favs or make a top list...I just hook on to the joy of the community which I am very proud to be part of and its so good to know that we all have the same feelings which god bless you are very human...this community so so feel goody its kind of refreshing to see the glimpse of each others honest feelings
November 14th, 2011
I agree with @sparkle that if your shot is towards the end of the week the number of Favs gets curtailed just because it hasn't had as long on PP (but I've seen some shots make Top 20 two weeks running for the same reason). I wonder if the problem is that you posted on Saturday so the computer is confused about which week to include it in - maybe worse if it was in a time zone cross-over of dates. It had a huge number of faves so it should have been number 1 - and anyway I'm planning to blatantly copy your idea with a toadstool (it won't be good enough to post here though - just for my own fun!!).
November 14th, 2011
This happened with my owl photo a couple weeks ago, but I don't like to complain either. I thought it might be my first time, but it wasn't!
Congrats to everyone that did make it though :)
November 14th, 2011
Forget the monkeys my own followers have blacklisted me. I know I fell behind by oh....four months. But I came back strong with a month of photos from the Medieval festival that I spent so much time working on that I didn't have *time* to photograph new or even upload.

365 is a lonely place when no one comments

*shrug* oh well.
November 14th, 2011
@neda I'm willing to bet that if you were gone for a 4 month hiatus, the majority of followers you previously had are no longer active on their projects. It's amazing how many people sign up, post a couple of shots, and then drift off.
November 15th, 2011
@shanne Ya, I think your right, Shanne! The PP is a ratio with the followers. But shouldn't the top 20 be the top 20?
@swilde You guys have not doomed me! If that's the case I would give up every top twenty for views! I think this site is all about sharing each others work and being excited enough to visit it as many times as we can! If I had to choose between the top 20 and the views, I choose the views! My friends here and followers are way to important to me!!!!!!!!!
November 15th, 2011
@bdb3471 I hear you, Brian! And your right! The only thing about the top 20, its a documented chart of work from the start of 365! You can look back and see the pics of the week from the beginning which is fantastic! I just think it shouldn't be a random monkey pick if they are going to call it the top 20.
November 15th, 2011
@scatcat Thank you so much, Muse! I can't wait to catch up and check out your project!
November 15th, 2011
@michelleyoung I hear you, Michelle! I'm getting over it fast!
@psychographer Thank you so much, Lisa! I don't want to make this a "Poor me" thing, I just needed to know if there were more of us with the same experience. I wouldn't trade my followers or the ones I follow for any chart or page!
November 15th, 2011
@mandyj92 Thanks, Amanda!
@sparkle Thank you, Juliette! I'm so glad you took the time to comment! Sorry, but it makes me feel better knowing it's happened to others! That sounds so horrible of me! ;P
November 15th, 2011
@janmaki Thanks, Jani! I couldn't agree more!
@clarek Thank you, Clare! It does help! :D
November 15th, 2011
@mastermek True that, Mek! Thanks for your feedback! :)
@danig I so agree with you, Danielle! The people here are the reason why I lay down in the middle of the street for the shot! ;D Its a great community ! Thanks, Danielle! :) Congrats on your photo!
November 15th, 2011
@laceyjogautreau Great point, Lacey! I think your on to something!
@pwallis So sweet, Paula! I really feel like i have found some great people here too! And friends! (like you too! ;)) That's why I can look past all of this! But to be honest, its fun to see our shots on these pages and I think everyone has to admit to that! Maybe changing the names to "Our monkey pics" and "Top 20 monkey pics" might help! :D
November 15th, 2011
@hjbenson Great point, Harry! Thank you for your feedback!
@amyhughes Its amazing how good it feels to hear you say that! After reading all these posts I almost don't even care anymore! Thank you so much for your comment, Amy! Its greatly appreciated! :D
November 15th, 2011
@webfoot Thanks, Paul!
@timandelke Thank you so much, Elke! Your right, who needs predictability!
November 15th, 2011
@nattybabe Thank you, Nat! Its all crazy! I really look forward to your pics too! I really love your work...and if you lag behind I'll be right there for you too! ;)
@kmrtn6 Ya, I'm starting to realize I'm not alone!
@harley84 Thank you so much, Katherine! Its great to have you out there! ;)
November 15th, 2011
@steveh Ya, I'm not so concerned about the PP either! I really have to check out your "Crazy Sneeze" again! That's amazing!
@positronicmommy Ya, Me too! Its not the PP I was so concerned about. I gave up on that months ago!
@angievega Thank you, Angie! Your work is amazing too!
November 15th, 2011

Thank you all very much for you feedback! It is so appreciated! I really mean that! I think something has gotten lost on this post though. This discussion was not at all about whining or stomping of the feet! This discussion was to find out if anyone else has had the same experience with the top 20, nothing more nothing less! Because of this interest, it means nothing about how much we appreciate the support and our own personal experiences here on 365! This is a life changing site and I couldn't say enough about the artists, friends, and support 365 has to offer! Thank you again so much to all of you...
November 15th, 2011
@orangecrush I know exactly how you feel I have felt this way for some time now even taking long brakes from posting because I have had the photo blues. But I tell myself that I take photos because I love it even if my photos are not as good as yours or others on this site. So in the end I really stopped caring if I get to PP or the top 20 because this is for me and the love of it. I really hope you are not still down about your photo not being in the top 20 we all know it deserved to be there just as you know in your heart it should of. You take brilliant beautiful photos I wish I had half your talent.
November 15th, 2011
@orangecrush I didn't think your were whining. I'm glad you posted this because now I know I'm not the only one it has happened to.
November 15th, 2011
@orangecrush No I didn't think you were whinning at all...it has happened to me and because of this discussion, I see I'm not alone. :)
November 15th, 2011
Jerry, I've almost given up on 365 altogether. It totally frustrates and discourages me. Not only can I not make the PP anymore, but I'd be tickled if more than six or seven people comment on my photos. I used to get well over 100 views and now I'm lucky if I hit 20. It is so easy to get discouraged when you feel so invisible. I really don't think my photos are half bad, but am definitely beginning to question myself. I look at some of the photos that make the PP or the top 20 list and am sometimes amazed. I mean REALLY? I'd love to know what criteria is used for both. It really frustrates me when I look at the PP or the top 20 and see a photo that is almost identical to one I'd already done has made the page while mine was barely noticed. Not that I'm not happy for those that make it, but it confuses me. Up until recently I thought that I would definitely go a second year, but now I'm counting down the days until I can finish. It's sad really. There has been so much discouragement and frustration caused by the PP and the top 20 that I really wish that part didn't even exist in the project. I know we should take photos for our own pleasure, but let's be totally honest - we all want encouragement and reinforcement regarding our work. I've grown so much in my ability this year so I don't have an ounce of regret for doing it, but I won't miss the disappointment and the occasional tears because of the project.
November 15th, 2011
I've been doing this project for 300 days.... and have never once made it to the PP. forget the top 20....
November 15th, 2011
You are top 20 in my book every week! :-)
You are so talented and that Tooth Fairy shot was magical!
November 15th, 2011
@dejongdd I felt sad when I read this as your photos are lovely. I think if you are really active in commenting then people look at your photos in return. I try and enjoy the interactions with others and then just be happy with whatever I get in return. I don't expect to make the PP or top 20, if I do that's wonderful but it's not my aim. My aim is to just improve my photos are appreciate the images of others. Hopefully you feel feel better soon and start to enjoy your wonderful project again. If you focus on being in the PP etc then you would lose the enjoyment of the whole thing xxx
November 15th, 2011
I don't understand why you can't enjoy your 365 project just because you don't make the top 20 all the time. If you know you have talent and people like looking at your photos that should be enough. Who cares what the monkeys pick? Most of the time I don't even look to see who's in the top 20 because I don't care. There are so many people posting pictures that if everyone quit because they aren't in the to 20 all the time there would be no 365. Enjoy your project and others...
November 15th, 2011
@buttercup couldn't have said it better :-)
November 15th, 2011

I gave up trying long ago regarding the pp and top20 (of which I have never made) and simply put shots as and when I can, this is my 2nd year and will probably be my last as interest in my work has dwindled to a few ow and although I do greatly appreciate all feed back and visit and comment on as many I can it would seem to be that pp is all about the amount of comments/fav's ie how popular your page is over the quality of the shot, so just enjoy the fact you get to take shots that people across the globe will view (large or small numbers) and feel inspired by the many talented photographers that do grace the 365

I wouldn't stress over this stuff so much, besides the pictures that are always popular page or in the top 20 are all the same ... someone's kid, a dog, a bug, a sunset, maybe a water drop here or there, a cloud...etc. I wouldn't exactly call it originality! People don't like originality, they just want to see the safe stuff that's always there... but that's just my opinion anyways.

@dejongdd - I am on #318, starting on Jan 1. I am getting tired of it. Commenting on 20 followers at the beginning was rather easy. Now with over a hundred, it is a lot more difficult. I can't sit at work and comment all day (like I am doing now). So, I comment on a hand full of people, you being one. I am also not seeking out new followers (by commenting on newbies, etc.) I also find that it is more difficult to come up with new picts every day. I think that I have ran out of barns to shoot in a 20 square mile radius. I wait for #365 to arrive. I like your stuff, Deb. I just wish that I had more time to do it justice. Keep up the good work.

@dune1953 Thank you Doug! I am sometimes my own worst enemy and let little things that are really insignificant get to me. I really appreciate your faithful following and these words of encouragement are very precious to me. I find myself stressing over what new photo to take long before I'm freed up to get my camera out of its case. I guess I'll have to see how I feel on January 1st when I don't have the pressure of posting a photo for the day.

Sorry to say this, hope I'm not making myself unpopular with you Jerry ;-) but maybe, just maybe it has to do with that the pic was made on the 9th, uploaded on the 10th (I checked your Exif), for the 5th and so it was "to late" for the Week 76 top 20 and couldn't (because you placed it on the 5th) the week 77 top 20.... just a little idea of mine...
November 15th, 2011
@elke I think you hit the nail on the head! After reading the comments here, the same thought came to me! You'll never be unpopular with me, Elke! I love your work!
November 15th, 2011
@pwallis Yep, most of mine are dead, I'm a zombie, back from the dead bwaahahahaha. I've got a few left that post when they find time.
November 15th, 2011
@dejongdd I think your work is amazing, Deb! Don't get discouraged! The more you comment and view the more you get comments and views. I know its hard to keep up, sometimes I wonder how people do it! I try to comment as much as I can and I usually comment on work from people that have commented on mine just because I get so overwhelmed trying to comment on as much as I wish I could. Its easy to get left behind a little if you don't stay active. Try taking a load of shots in one session and post all week from that one session.

@buttercup I'm not saying I'm not enjoying my project, Mary. I find this community to be very rewarding and I love the people here. Lets say you are a fan of Halloween and you've put a lot of effort into your costume for a costume contest at your favorite watering hole. The crowd goes wild! Your a hot hit, but the kid with the sheet over his head wins! In fact your left in the back of the room without a door prize. would it bother you? maybe not.
November 15th, 2011
@orangecrush So the people who DID make the Top 20 are the kid with the sheet over their heads? How are they to feel when they read that?
November 15th, 2011
@orangecrush Well, put that way, yes it would bother me. I think you take awesome pictures. But to me all the bells and whistles aren't where it's at. I love looking at new people and encouraging them on their projects. I think this is a great community and we all can see who we thing takes the most amazing photos in our minds. We tell the photographers that in our comments. I'm just saying not to put all of your self worth in what the Monkeys pick. Who cares what they like? I don't.
November 15th, 2011
@beautifulthing spunky! Just exaggerated to prove a point!
November 15th, 2011
@orangecrush LOL - spunky, I like that. :)
November 15th, 2011
@orangecrush I was worried for a sec... LOL just kidding, but i love riddles and don't believe in black-lists on this sites... although I am starting to believe in (tooth-)fairies, hobbits, leprechauns, fauns and magic monkeys ;-)
@beautifulthing I've always wanted to be that kid... but my mum sowed my sheet into a costume LMAO Lucky me I was that kid this time and made it to the top 20, even if it's with a pic that is loved by others and just simple experimental fun for me (Of course I've made pics in the past that I wished made it to the top... or even PP, if only because of all the hours of work I had put into it...but I guess I'm not the only one)
November 15th, 2011
@elke I loved that shot - I was all, "oh, that's the girl with the photo where she was coughing up bokeh". :) I'm always pleasantly surprised by the pics in my project that seem to resonate with people. I'm like, really, that one? THAT one?? I finally decided that it was the universe telling me to stop thinking I'm so bloody clever and to just. let. go. :)

/threadjack - my mum always made our Halloween costumes. They were lovely and thoughtful and I hated it, because all I wanted was one of those plastic coverall costumes with the mask, like all the other kids. Which I think probably made me a bit of a horrid child, but there you are. :)
November 16th, 2011
@orangecrush - maybe i'm new to this or just don't "get it", but what's the point in being top 20 or PP - just bragging rights?

I can't figure out on this site what makes someone popular or deserving of followers - there are people here who amass followers who I think take the dumbest pictures and there are others that show a lot of creativity and thought who only have a handful.

Either way, you made me look at your pictures.. and I'd never heard of you before! :)
November 16th, 2011
I have never made top 20...I am very grateful that i have made pp many times and do not take for granted anytime that it has happened(afterall, it is strickly a matter of people's opinions lol) Still i would be dishonest if i did not say that i had hopes for one day making it:)))
November 16th, 2011
@pwallis - I am behind the pickle on the pop page campaign lol:)))
November 16th, 2011
@4stories I just noticed @brumbe posted a comment on that shot clearly stating her support for the campaign, lol
November 16th, 2011
@orangecrush I have not gone thru all of this thread but just checked out your toothfairy shot, amazing and I cannot believe it was not a top 20. It is fabulous!
November 16th, 2011
I'm one of the kids with the sheet over my head :-). When I hear that, I understand exactly what Jerry is saying. I think his shot was terrific. I was very impressed. I was surprised it wasn't on. I have to say I liked it better than mine. I did enjoy the other shots on there . Number 1 was perfect. Full of joy. I try not to take these things too seriously. I just try to enjoy the process and the great people.
November 16th, 2011
I have no idea how this sight works, but I will say that, and this is just my opinion, nothing else, that some of the photos that make the pop page make it strictly on popularity, not simply because its a great shot, I have often thought, that there were better candidates for the page that got missed, but I guess that just how it goes. I gave up a long time ago worrying about the pop page and such, and do this project strictly for myself and the few great people that I follow and follow me. I am far from a professional photographer, and there are many many better picture takers than me, but again, this whole site is enjoyable, and getting to know so many people from all over the world, for me is far better than being popular....again, just my two cents.
November 16th, 2011
@orangecrush - Jerry I had assumed you got the number 1 spot and could not figure out how in the world that didnt happen! I have not read the thread here and will later because Im interested. I can't tell you how many times I have had pics with 15 to 20 favs in one day that don't ever make the pop page due to some wacky formula! But as for the "Official Top 20" its is supposed to be all about number of Favs and you had a ton of them.
November 16th, 2011
@exposure4u @wjw1741 @pwallis @judithg @nattybabe @sparkle @michelleyoung @deens @pocketmouse @orangecrush @bdb3471

Just throwing my two-cents in here - I have spoken to Ross about some of these issues. I have rec'd 15-20 favs in one day on many pics that never make the pop page, because based upon the algorythm utilized (factoring in views, comments, favs, follows, etc - no photo monkeys) one must exceed a certain percentage of their avg and mine happens to be high, thus making it hard for me to make it to PP. But as for the "Official Top 20" he said it is based purely on number for Favs. So you do not need to be on Pop page but can still be in Top 20. Jerry by the cut-off point I thought you had the most! So i'd be interested in knowing why you were not too!
November 16th, 2011
There seems to be no connection between the number of Favs and an appearance on the pop page. I have had photos with only two favs appear there immediately and stay up for several days, while others with more have not appeared at all, altbough some people have kindly told me they have seen them there briefly, but so what? As this is not meant to be a competition I rarely bother to check either the pops or the top 20. I am just happy to know that some people have been kind enough to say that they like one of my photos, and tell me why ... and that means so much more than "winning" a putty medal in a competition with no transparent judging criteria. I have also noticed that in my personal stats, some with the greater number of favs and comments come way down the list below those with fewer, so again I say ignore them and enjoy!
November 16th, 2011
@orangecrush I've noticed this quite a few times too. I remember last year in the middle of my project, a bunch of people quit this website becasue of what they called the unfair nature of the Top 20. After that, Ross put up some sort of discussion (of course I can't find it) that talked about how he was going to try to give some credit to some of the younger or newer people to the site. Most of the people complaining talked about how the same people always made the Top 20 week in and week out, and it wasn't fair because it wasn't giving people the chance to get recognized. So, I think at that moment, Ross changed the way he formulated winners. I still don't understand the formula, but I think he tries to be fair and include lots of different photographers from the site week in and week out. I don't know... maybe I'm wrong. But I definitely remember a discussion about this at one point.

When I started this project, I didn’t even know what the popular page was let alone have a goal of getting on it. I made it several times and then became somewhat stressed when I didn’t for awhile. I just decided that making the PP was never my intention when I came here, so I’ve quit worrying about it. I do completely understand what you mean, but I suppose there is no “fair” way to do it.
