rock identification

December 3rd, 2011

Is there anyone on 365 Project who is a geologist? If not, is there anyone who knows a lot about rocks? Anyway, I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me what kind of rocks these are in this picture. I think my dad got them from several national parks in Utah and Arizona. (such as Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and the Grand Canyon.)

They look like different types of river rocks....they were under water at some point in history because of the rounded smooth shapes. Other than that, I really couldn't tell you more.

I think the one at the top might be a Tootsie Roll.

First off, it's illegal to remove anything from a National Park.

Most of those rocks have been polished, so they were probably found in or near rivers. I wouldn't be surprised if the middle rocks is granite. The pink color is probably quartz. That's what I think the rock in the lower right hand corner is as well - quartz.

I am no geologist but I used to work at a science school (camp) for 6 years and one of the subjects was Geology. They all look like igneous rocks (so that narrows it down just a bit). The middle one does look like granite. The pink ones may be rose quarts (quarts is found near water and since these rocks are smooth, they must have been near a river).

To be honest, I can't tell unless I had the rocks in my hand.

Just can't tell from a picture. If light comes through that one on the bottom right, then I'm betting it is a quartz. Try a identification key like this one: http://geology.about.com/library/bl/blrockident_tables.htm and see where that takes you. And yes, don't ever take anything from a national park, or any park, unless is specifically allows collecting. Leave footprints, take pictures.

Does anyone know what kind of rock this is? It might be clay but are there any guesses?
