EOTB9 - 'Eye of the Beholder' - CHALLENGE

May 21st, 2013
It's really super to be hosting this particular challenge because it generates such a rich variety of images and offers everyone the chance to show off their individual way of seeing the world around them.
A quick thanks @carajill for selecting my picture as a finalist and for all your votes :o)
My photo is here http://365project.org/gozoinklings/365/2013-05-06 if you want to take a peep!

So...

Devised by a bloke called Jeff, i'll let you read below just what he had in mind:

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

For those of you that don't want to commit to a specific set of words for a month, are intimidated by the thought of being pushed by another 365'er, don't want to be constrained to a specific mundane object, aren't feeling the week's theme, feel you don't have the creativity, time or tools for album and wwyd challenges but still want to face down and conquer a challenge, I have just the challenge for YOU!

(Also, if you enjoy facing all the above challenges and can't get enough of challenges and want to add another challenge to your arsenal, this is for YOU as well!)

Here's the lowdown (and its fairly simple):

Your challenge is to find something most people would not consider to be beautiful, and find a way to capture it that IS beautiful, You can achieve it any way you desire. This challenge will help you with your composition and lighting skills. The way you compose the shot or the way you use light will usually be the way you bring out the beauty. It will also help you look at your surroundings differently. Everything is potentially a beautiful photograph. Its not a matter of finding something to photograph, its a matter of finding a way to photograph something that makes photographing it worthwhile.

There is not specific item you have to photograph for this challenge. And the only rule is that the subject you photograph has to be something that, if people were watching you photograph it, would be wondering what has possessed you to photograph something so plain, bland, boring, ugly, etc. Beauty is where you find it, and it is all around you. Train your eye to see things differently.
@jsw0109

Got that? :o)

The challenge starts on Wednesday 22nd May. It finishes on Wednesday 29th May. The date your entry is taken must be within this time frame. Then comes the tough job of choosing the finalists and I shall post the 5 images which came closest to achieving the goal on Friday 31st May. Voting will then run until Monday 3rd June.

Tag your entries EOTB9

I will announce the winner soon after that and then that lucky person will have the honour of selecting the 5 finalists for Eye of the Beholder 10!

Have fun !

I do like using processing sometimes to emphasise what I see as the character of an image. In this case it is an urban scene with unfortunately at least one unattractive and dominant element, an unused gas holder which has been like this for years. It is probably too expensive or too dangerous to remove.

So it is now redundant and of no benefit to the residents of this town. Its presence broods over all in the neighbourhood.

Thorns - as beautiful as the rose they protect
11 / 365
I have taken a few photos of this rosebush - some of the beautiful flowers it produces but the stem and its thorns and the way they look at certain times of the day always draw me to them. I attracted a couple of strange looks from the neighbours walking their dogs..I realised not because the lens was pointing at the stem rather than the rose above but because I was out in the front yard wearing my daggy PJs and fluffy slippers with mussed hair, crouching and stepping around the thorny bushes like a crazy woman

@annied ha ha - now you in those slippers would be a sight to behold! well done for being far from useless!

Floating By
12 / 365
We were out around Botany Bay yesterday, so many wonderful things to photograph - the airport, the bay, container terminals - and I took around 200 photos - but it was this styrofoam cup floating past while I was walking along the boat ramp that really caught my eye. The cup itself was damaged and dirty but its reflection on the water was amazing. I played around with the processing and this is my favourite at this point in time - I plan to go back and play around some more.

This once creamy white magnolia flower has morphed to a tea-colored bloom...still exuding beauty as it greets it ultimate demise.

I've never tried this challenge before, but this is my attempt at making a gfci outlet beautiful. My photo has a little more backstory, if you care to read.
