RAWCOMP20 (and WWYD109) - Doggie Edit

May 1st, 2014
Thanks to Lyn and all who participated in RAWCOMP19. It is an honor to be selected to host the next RAW challenge (RAWCOMP20)!

To join the RAWCOMP challenge you first download the nef (or dng) image from the link below and then edit it using your RAW editor only (eg Lightroom, Adobe Camera RAW or the editing software that came bundled with your digital camera). The resulting file is then saved as a jpeg, uploaded to your 365 album and tagged RAWCOMP20. The challenge host will select finalists from the submissions.

The picture I have selected for you to edit was taken in a park in California in March of this year. Remember, you don't edit this jpg version, it is posted here so you can see what you're going to edit. The whites on the dog are slightly over-exposed but you can recover a significant amount of details with some effort.

The dng files can be read by any RAW software program – free or commercial. A sample RAW edit workflow is at http://www.digitalcameraworld.com/2013/03/19/how-to-process-raw-images-the-right-way/

RAWCOMP Challenge rules are:

"All editing must be done with a RAW processor, using no other software or plugins" - so use either Lightroom, Adobe Camera RAW, the RAW processing software that came with your camera, but nothing else that does anything more than RAW processing. There are some free RAW file processors available if you do not have one. see http://365project.org/discuss/general/19765/raw
This challenge is NOT about using ‘photoshop’ editing, plugins such as NIK or Topaz, or any other editing other than RAW processing. This differentiates it from WWYD, where any editing goes. Cropping the photo is allowed but must be done within the RAW processor."

All entries must be submitted by 9 PM Pacific PST on May 7 and the finalists will be announced on May 8.

Don't forget to tag your photo RAWCOMP20 and if you wish, post your edited images here using the ‘share’ code from your album page.

This challenge is a great way to learn something new, good luck everyone and I do look forward to seeing your entries!

You can edit the same picture for the WWYD109 Challenge......

here's my attempt. I desaturated the picture quite a bit to bring out the detail and not get distracted by the colors in the background. Beautiful dog! Beautiful capture @mikegifford

@deburahiru Thanks Deb, I have started my WWYD , but promised myself not to rush and I need more time to gather resources. Hope I can complete in time.

@archielogical I like the shading and burning of the shadows to bring out details in the dog! Looking forward to your wwyd entry!

Here is my attempt! I was tempted to crop on just the dog, but I love the background too and the framing of that nice tree, so I decided this was a happy medium.
