****edit 1/17:: I think most people get this, but I want to say, this is not a Photoshop contest! This is what would you do if this was your 365 photo? How would you process the pic to make it with of your 365 calendar, and what style would your followers expect to see? ALSO: your caption should include the original photographer's tag (mine is @sdpace) and the competition name. *****
Thanks everyone for the input on this! Especially @eyebrows and @icywarm for the technical suggestions and help.
This will be the first "what would you do?" ... I am going to steal Ross' format for contest entries and deadlines...
Entry to this competition starts on Monday (17th January) and will accept entries until Sunday night (23:59 GMT 23rd Jan). 5 finalists will be chosen next week and we'll vote on the winner then.
Please do whatever you like with the photo, we want to see everyone's creative post-processing!
First shot is one I took of the side of a building in Downtown Dallas. I am posting a link to 2 verisons:
This is no perfect photo by any means...lighting is poor, a bit grainy, and it's crooked...but I loved the look of the building itself. :)
I will choose the top 5 once this is over, and then put it to a vote. The winner will get to choose the next photo and do the judging!! Happy editing!
*Please tag your submission as WWYD-1. It should be somwhere in your 365 album, even if you post back on the 2008 calendar. Otherwise, it's going to be difficult to view them all together.
Great idea space! (im calling you space cause thats what peeps call me, and your name is perfect for it, hope it doesnt offend) :) hmm, i wonder what I would do, gonna have to give it some thought!
this sounds so awesome :) Especially since everyone on this website tends to have a distinct and unique style when it comes to post processing their pictures! Woo can't wait to do this!
Had another idea, although looking at it now... I prefer my original. So if you're gonna do it one-entry-per-person style Space, reply and I'll de-tag and remove this from the thread :)
@christiq If you can upload it somewhere else on the 'net, flickr, photobucket, anywhere where you can direct link to it, then you can get it to show up in here too. Let me know if you *do* have elsewhere to stick it, and I'll show how.
I've done that before just using imgur.com where I put random photos for storage. You can click on "how can i format my reply" below the comment box, and use the < img src="URL" > format, which puts your image that is stored anywhere on the net into the forum. just make sure that the link is the actual photo URL (like www.myimages.com/wwyd1.jpg)
I have to say I love this idea, I love to edit photos and play around with various effects. I did two edits on this image, I did upload them to 2 days I didn't have entries for, but will post them here also. I may not want to use an upload each week if this continues, which I hope it does.
My first edit is a more natural edit. Tried to bring out the natural colors and highlight the rust and decay of the building.
This second one I wanted to highlight the fire escape. I thought giving it a haunted or super natural feel would be really cool.
i usually try to process my photos to make them realistic looking, but since this was an editing challenge, i went a little photoshop-crazy. what fun i had!
Definitely some great ideas already! Looks like @afletch beat me to the charcoal touch, but I did crop just a little different. Love the original grimy but flat look of the SOOC image.
I told myself I wasn't going to look at any entries until I had one done and I'm happy to say I kept my promise to me...good thing, too, because you are so so freakin' creative! I think I've discovered something - I am probably as conservative in my photography as in my life - note to self - think outside your comfort zone in this project!
@sdpace ok then, because I keep saying [whinging] I have no idea/visual artistry I'm going to have to practise this/my skills ... Cheers Stacy (give me two days till GC goes then I'll play hookey from work tasks)
I haven't got time to join in with this at the moment, but just wanted to say it's amazing to see the choices and styles of processing and editing. This post should definitely continue and i'll come and play when i get some space!! :0)
@dmortega Yes, they're here..but they're from flickr. if you put them somewhere on your 365 calendar and tag them, they will be searchable by the tag and not just on this thread...same way they do the theme competitions, except the posted-to date doesn't matter
@sdpace Okay I did as you said and edited my post! :) So much editing going on this morning tee hee... Loving this contest!! I do have a question: will the SOOC pic change daily or is this the only one we will have to work with this week? I have some more ideas for editing but not sure if I can come up with a weeks' worth lol If you addressed this already, please forgive!
@sdpace
Sorry, but no way. My album is for my project only.My photots. If I had an Ace account, then I would upload it in a secondary album. But I don`t have one,so FlickR will have to do.
@mistirain3 i planned to have this run for a week, but no be daily entries for anyone, or maybe just one day's. this will work like the weekly theme competition, and after this first run, we might change to 3 days instead of a week. the top 5 are chosen by the photographer, and the winner is chosen by public vote. winner will submit the photo for the next go-round!
@sdpace --- Ok, I see you want to keep them on this site then. "*Please tag your submission as WWYD-1 if you post it as a daily, or just enter it on this thread." --- This will not work then. The only way to tag them for here is to post them here. Let's make sure to note that up top. I'll upload my favorite here. :-)
Here is mine, it's on picasa. I don't want to post it on my 365, because it would change my number of pics. If you don't want to consider it for the competition (I understand that clicking many many links to different external websites can be llloooonnngg) it's ok, I just had fun editing and seeing what everybody else came up with :)
@spaceman@maola Understandable if you don't have ace. I will do what I can with the judging on the external site ones since I originally said yesterday that it was okay to do.
I had the hardest time with this for some reason, I'm a total beginner at editing and don't know half of the ins and outs of Lightroom. I had fun none the less! :D
I will put it in a daily but one of the original posts said it was fine to post here in the thread. I knew the outside links would not appear in the theme link. I can understand though that people who don't have ace are not going to want to post there.
It's a good incentive to upgrade to the Ace. It's super inexpensive and worthwhile if you are truly enjoying your experience here. The additional albums will give you someplace to put your odd pictures and will not interfere with your project.
@nanascraps I totally understand, Barbara. I didn't realize so many people would be doing this - so now I am trying to work out the kinks of the competition so going forward people don't have to keep up with all the links to external sites. Sorry for changing it, and as I told Martin, I will do my best to keep the externals in consideration for this round. Thanks!
"your caption should include the original photographer's tag (mine is @sdpace) and the competition name."
Tags are not recognized in the caption area. You can request two tags or reformat the tag to include the user name. Even then there will be plenty of people who won't know how to find the user name if it isn't supplied for them.
ha ha ha ha ..until I read this post..i was wondering why do so many people have the same stair case picture in one day :D :D awesome idea @sdpace ...I will give it a try...
I really like the editing part of photography and did not want to be left out so I took the plunge and upgraded my account this morning. I had planned to do it anyway but this challenge gave me the push to get it going now.
I've deleted the other posts above to my flickr account and reposted the new links, complete with the appropriate tags too. ;-) Let the games begin.
I could not be any more happy with how your photo fits into my calender. Days later and I am still pleased. Inspiration has been tuff lately so thank you..
In keeping with the what-would-your-followers-expect-to-see spirit here is my second entry for WWYD#1 @sdpace. This is the kind of thing I would normally do, LOL
@sdpace --- I know you have posted two pictures, one in RAW and one in JPEG on a public site so others can get a copy. What about the winners that don't do RAW? What about the public site? Lots of people are really interested in participating but like me, they may have issues with what they should be doing should they win.
@dmortega I set up a free dropbox account. I can continue to post the public photos there, the winner would just have to email the photo to me. I am up for suggestions to make this an ongoing thing. Seems like a lot of people have enjoyed doing it, and as the photographer, I am enjoying seeing what everyone else sees in my photo. :)
Being a bit of an "internet guy" @sdpace I'd advise against emailing large RAW files around, and suggest giving access to the dropbox account to whoever wins. You reckon that'd work? We know everyone has a browser, so can likely use dropbox, and its infrastructure is much more reliable than that of "email" for sending multi-megabyte files about the place.
@dmortega@sdpace Ok so call me amateur - I am fine with that lol But I have no clue what either of you are talking about? If I were to win how would all of this translate to me? What is it that you are saying that I will need to do if I do win? I thought if I win all I would have is bragging rights LOL Which is completely fine with me being that I am so new here. Can you expound on what the two of you are talking about?
@mistirain3 The original plan wa that the winner gets to choose one of their own photos to submit for processing, and would select the top 5 on their photo, etc.
@eyebrows Hey - do you know anything about the way the tagged posts are ordered when you browse by tag? I notice the order has changed a bit, and am wondering if they are in order by views or comments or popularity, or if it's just random???
My first post, a few pics earlier, is entitled "Stairway to Heaven". I inverted the pic, rotated the canvas. Stairway to Heaven is no longer an appropriate title.
@denvela if you want to load it as your photo, you can. if not, you can put it on a day in the past in your calendar. There is a box with code on every photo page that says "share". Just copy that code and past it into a comment here, and your photo will be posted. :) don't forget to tag it with wwyd-1 :)
Great competition idea Stacy! After toying with this photo a few times, I kept getting sucked into the grungy details in the brick. Love the rusty details, so I brought them out with some vintage and color processing. Added the vignette for a gritty feel.
I think the entries have been really creative and a joy to view. How someone can choose amongst all these brilliant interpretations is beyond me - but good luck. I look forward to getting the opportunity to vote.
@mistirain3 I ran it through 23:59 GMT 23rd Jan which is about 4 hours from now, so I will post them before my night is over. :) I have been looking at them daily - I don't think I could pick 5 out of all the ones if I just started sorting through them today!
Lightroom made it look grimy, Paintshop Pro added some banksy shiznit to enhance the feel.
Here's mine......
It's a great idea, the photo's already edited!
Oh and:
> @eyebrows You are the most helpful soul I've ever encountered on the internet. Truly. Thank you so much. :)
1. Blush-mode engaged :p
2. You've not met @jinximages yet then it seems :)
is there a way to post the photo here without uploading it as one of my "daily" photos?
My first edit is a more natural edit. Tried to bring out the natural colors and highlight the rust and decay of the building.
This second one I wanted to highlight the fire escape. I thought giving it a haunted or super natural feel would be really cool.
>2. You've not met @jinximages yet then it seems :)
You are correct...but I just looked him up, and considering he has a "how to" album....well, I get your drift. :)
First attempt.

Here it is - I might try again -

cloned out sign & tree , tried to make it look spooky & failed LOL !
and a girly version lol
Here is my entry:
The text across the pic is this quote: Fain would I climb, yet fear I to fall.

Good luck everyone!
@bbm Your link to your 365 isn't showing up, and it leads to a different photo
@mistirain3 @asrai @dmortega @chevymom @polarvrtx @spaceman @lee2011 @christiq @wheezy @nanascraps @iiwi @afletch @lissuhllama You guys either have no link on the pic or an external one. I didn't realize that this would be such a popular contest....I think it would be best if you put your photo on your 365 (any date is fine, i have seen some of them posted to January 2008) and then tag with wwyd-1 so they can show up with everyone elses.
Sorry, but no way. My album is for my project only.My photots. If I had an Ace account, then I would upload it in a secondary album. But I don`t have one,so FlickR will have to do.

That is awesome! I love that.
here is mine :)

Here is mine... This buidling reminded me of an old ghetto building > which led to the thought of crime > which led me to this.

Thanks for a great competition idea! here's my entry...

Went a little wild, had fun though. :)

I don't have lightroom, (sigh) I used Picassa and an old Corel program to do this for the challenge
