Technique-94 Smoke

June 8th, 2019
First off, thanks to all who chose my image from the prior challenge hosted by @ingajohansson. She flipped things back to me as the chosen photographer from my prior challenge, Shadows to Black. I very much like this particular challenge. It is focused on getting us out of the comfort zone. Below is a list of the prior challenges, to keep the string going (one is missing). The list is quite adventurous leaving me at a loss. So after a quick internet search, I found a technique that actually makes ME feel uncomfortable. I have never used SMOKE as a subject. This challenge will take some experimentation and a bit of work on setup. I SEE THIS CHALLENGE HAS BEEN TRIED BEFORE, BUT ANOTHER GO WILL BE FUN.

To help with the learning process, here is an interesting interview with Stoffel De Roover. He describes the shooting and editing techniques he uses to create beautiful imagery using smoke as the subject.

And here is another take on the technique from the New York School of Photography:

I hope this is a fun adventure. Please undertake this challenge safely!

THE CHALLENGE BEGINS TODAY AND ENDS JUNE 22.

I completely support doing repeats. This list is quite long. If we keep trying to find something unique, the challenges get too obscure.

@tdaug80 Very true. The techniques used so far pretty much run the gamut. It's fun to think outside of the box, but I had trouble finding a new technique that would be generally accessible to all photographers. This one should be a fun foray.

@tdaug80 @walrus I think it’s also worth remembering that there are new folks joining 365 all the time - so the challenges will be all new to them! Definitely makes sense to recycle!
