ed-competition (again!)

February 25th, 2011
Just reminding everyone that there is only one day left for entries (until Saturday) so make sure you enter, and tag with ed-competition !! (:

I'm really pleased that some more people have entered, and i love all the photo's. But when i think about how many people are on this site, only 30 odd people have entered, and it kind of makes me a little sad.
Many people are unaware of somebody having an eating disorder (for instance i've suffered from one for nearly 10 years, and my family and friends don't know), but i can guarantee you that you have come across atleast 1 person in your life that will have had, or still does have, an eating disorder.
The likely hood that you know someone at this very moment that has an ED is incredibly high. It might be your friend, your teacher, your pupil, a colleague, your brother, your sister, your mother or your father. Eating disorders can affect anyone, no matter how old or young, male or female.
So please, if you can take the time to enter this competition, it will really mean a lot to me.

Here are some shocking statistics for you;

* At least 1.1 million people in the UK are affected by an eating disorder, with young people in the age-group 14-25 being most at risk of developing this type of illness.

* In the UK, nearly 2 in every 100 secondary school girls suffer from anorexia nervosa,
bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder.

*In a survey conducted by BEAT of 600 young people with eating disorders, they found:
Only 1 percent of children felt they could talk to their parents about their eating-related concerns.
9 percent of children felt they might be able to talk to someone at school.
17 percent of children felt they might be able to talk to a doctor or nurse.
92 percent of children felt they couldn’t tell anyone.

beat currently believes the number of people receiving treatment for anorexia or bulimia to be near to 90,000, while many more people have eating disorders undiagnosed, in particular those with bulimia nervosa.
A person with an eating disorder can recover within five years providing they receive appropriate treatment, but in some cases, the illness will persist throughout life.

* According to US estimates from The National Institute of Mental Health, between 5 per cent and 10 per cent of girls and women (i.e. 5-10 million people) and 1 million boys and men suffer from eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or other associated dietary conditions. Estimates suggest that as many as 15 percent of young women adopt unhealthy attitudes and behaviors about food.

* General estimates suggest that as many as 10-15 per cent of eating disorders are FATAL for those affected.

And here's a picture that i made for ED awareness week, feel free to take any idea's from it (the quotes etc) to create your own (:

I only saw this this morning which is why I hadn't entered any sooner. As soon as I saw it, I got RIGHT on my photo of the day. I didn't even wait for the sun to fully come up. I think it is a very important cause and I have posted my photo all over the net hoping to get some people thinking about it.
