Flash of Red February Moves on to Week 4

February 17th, 2024
Congratulations to all who tackled, tried, and possibly even conquered split toning this week! I know it was a stretch for most of you and it was for me too. My attempt at it did not match what I was able to do in-camera for those examples I posted, so I tabled it for a rainy day and will try another time. Experimenting is half the fun! So, dust off your success or failure and get ready for another week of black and white compositions and fun.

February 19-25 Discovering Negative Space in Black and White Photography

What is Negative space? Negative space is simply the area surrounding your subject which is often unoccupied. Effective use of negative space forces you to direct your attention to the subject. One of the most well-known and practiced use of negative space is the genre known as minimalism. Leading lines, lighting, cropping, and intentionally blurring the background are ways to accomplish the balance between your subject and the area surrounding it. Photographer Craig McCord says it like this, “Simplify, simplify, simplify!”

This week select a compositional a compositional element that you would like to feature in your photos- line, pattern, light and shadow, shape or texture. Challenge yourself to bring out these elements in the simplest or most minimalistic way you can.

Here are some articles that may help with this:

When you are out looking for photos this week, watch your backgrounds. The less that’s in there to begin with, the more successful your minimal shots will be and the better your negative space will look. If you are going the natural route and searching for images such as a lone tree in a field, be aware of the sky. Black and white is very forgiving on overcast days, but it absolutely loves clouds. Make sure a dramatic sky isn’t arguing for attention with your subject (unless it is your subject!).

So grab your camera and go, explore and discover the positive side of negative space!
