im been debating getting some extension tubes to use with my 50mm 1.8. id like to take some close up macro photos.
so far ive only been able to find the kenko ones, but the price tag is a bit more then i was wanting to spend. plus side is i can use them on any future lenses i buy right.
does anyone have these or an alternative that they like, and if so can you post some pictures you have taken with them. thanks!
@cdaniels i got some extension tubes for my 50mm as well. i think there are two types out there on the market, the first one is the more expensive type (~USD100) but the good thing about it is that it has contacts so your AF can still function even with the extension tubes stacked. second type is the cheap, purely aluminum type, with no contacts (~USD10) which is a purely manual affair (which i got).
so far this is the only one i posted here using the ext tubes because of really tricky focusing.
@cdaniels We've got kenko extension tubes, It is super tricky to focus the DOF is millimetres... however the result is pretty good and a darn site cheaper than a macro.
We also use ours with a 50mm...
My photo a couple days ago was my first try with them (my husband bought them a while back and made a flash defuser) it has great results but (as you'll see) i just about had ice cream all over the front of the lens! hehehe.
I'm sure the cheaper ones would do the job but not being able to use the AF etc settings would be a bit fiddly.
Hi Chris,
I got some cheap extension tubes without any contactpoints for aperture settings, and I can tell you it is immensely difficult to take photos with. I use bits of broken off match sticks to manually force the aperture to open up wider in the lens. I'm saving up for the proper extension tubes now. I did make a few really nice extreme close ups with the ext set I have now, so I know it's worth it.
I've been debating getting a geared tripod head - It's an ideal solution to the focusing problem with macro & extension tubes. The geared head will allow you to 'zoom' the head of the tripod in very small increments to get just the right focus.
Extension tubes don't have glass, they're just empty tubes with the correct connectors for your particular camera. They'll also normally break your autofocus and aperture control, unless it has the proper contacts.
@cdaniels because hes got to get so close to the bugs and things he doesnt use a tripod... and he refuses to photograph dead bugs which i claim would be FAR easier!! LOL!
