Lucy's blocks  by dulciknit

Lucy's blocks

These percussion blocks are part of a 1940s mechanical organ called Lucy. She would have been used in a Belgian cafe, rather like a jukebox.
It was fun trying to catch the gadongkers [ technical term ;-) ] in motion.

There's a photo of the whole of the front of the instrument, and a bit more info about Lucy here : http://365project.org/dulciknit/on-the-day-extr/2012-06-30
and a clip of her playing here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJgFjbIj4wo

Lucy and 11 of her friends were being put through their paces at various locations around Hitchin town centre today. I found the event on a web surf and since Lester and I are mechanical organ fans, we decided to go to see them and hear them play. It was a smashing afternoon. Hitchin is a nice bustling, buzzy place on a Saturday afternoon and has some lovely old architecture.
I'm sorry I missed it. Brings back a few memories of times past.

What a cool shot. I love that you captured the gurdonkers in motion - almost as well as I love the term! :)

@chamal
Thank you, Charles. :-)

This is part of an old cafe organ. You can see a photo of the whole thing here : http://365project.org/dulciknit/on-the-day-extr/2012-06-30

And there is a video of the same organ playing a tune here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJgFjbIj4wo

I hope this helps. Best wishes. A.

Interesting story and information on, once again, something I never knew about. Love that invigorating music....reminds me of being on a carousal or attending a festival. Great photo!
