I don't know why I wasn't following you Alison. I was sure that I was. Still... I have put that right. I was in Herne Bay the day after the storms of 1977 (or was it 1978) when the pier was demolished by a combination of high winds and heavy seas. I used to go roller skating on the pier in its heady days.
@steampowered Thank you Paul. You roller-skated? I was a total roller-nut in my teens, used to go up to 4 times a week. Never to Herne Bay, though. I think all the racket on the rinks was one of the reasons my hearing's duff now.
@dulciknit I was never particularly good! I would just about get used to going around the rink in one direction without falling on my @rse and they would blow a whistle and you had to stop (!), turn and skate in the other direction (with much @rse bruising again)!
I too have memories of Herne Bay especially the year the sea froze. We regularly visited an elderly aunt but have not been back for years. We are hoping to have a short break in Kent so will have to revisit.
@dulciknit I was born in Chatham too (though I have no family connections there). We went abroad when I was very young but when we came back, we lived in Gillingham/Rainham and I went to secondary school in Chatham. It's a small world.
@dulciknit I left in 1982. The Dockyard had closed by then, and it was impossible to get work in the area, so I opted for university instead and moved out of Kent. Funny how things turn out.
Nicw shot, as a child in the late 50's I lived in Southend, one summer we had a day trip to Canterbury going on the Waverly from Southend pier to Hern Bay pier
Hmmm! Interesting. I used to go there regularly in my youth. It looks a bit different now. I once sailed a dinghy into that pier (when it was connected to the land) and now there are funny creatures waving at me from the horizon too. LOL> Nice pic.
The bw photo looks so old fashioned, as if they've used the same one for the sticks of rock since they started making it. The windmills are a bit of a giveaway! I wonder how many children actually look at the photo before throwing it away.
Love your processing and composition. My parents lived in Herne Bay for 40 years after my Dad retired and I am in the process of selling their house right now. Herne Bay has changed hugely since they first went there and is really quite a nice typical seaside resort.

I was further up the Kent coast in the 70s but remember enjoying exploring it on days out.
Whereabouts were you, Ariel? I was born and brought up in Chatham and know the Kent coast quite well.
