The end of the pier

A better on large view one if you have a moment. Thank you.

For anyone not familiar with seaside rock, here's some info. :

In the UK it's very often coloured a bright pink and traditionally wrapped in cellophane with a little b&w photo of a seaside view tucked into it.

Happy weekend!
I don't know why I wasn't following you Alison. I was sure that I was. Still... I have put that right. I was in Herne Bay the day after the storms of 1977 (or was it 1978) when the pier was demolished by a combination of high winds and heavy seas. I used to go roller skating on the pier in its heady days.

@steampowered Thank you Paul. You roller-skated? I was a total roller-nut in my teens, used to go up to 4 times a week. Never to Herne Bay, though. I think all the racket on the rinks was one of the reasons my hearing's duff now.

Blimey, you can get Herne Bay rock?!
July 26th, 2013
@dulciknit I was never particularly good! I would just about get used to going around the rink in one direction without falling on my @rse and they would blow a whistle and you had to stop (!), turn and skate in the other direction (with much @rse bruising again)!

@crewnelson Don't they sell it any more there?

I too have memories of Herne Bay especially the year the sea froze. We regularly visited an elderly aunt but have not been back for years. We are hoping to have a short break in Kent so will have to revisit.

Like the shot and the commentary above. You do learn a lot - use to love to roller skate, too. Shame that's mostly gone away.

Great play on words,Alison!! Love the processing!!

@dulciknit Sorry, I was being sarcastic about poor old HB. ( I worked there)
July 26th, 2013
@dulciknit @steampowered btw, there's a group trying to raise enough money to rebuild the pier.

Great idea to process this way, very inventive, great photo.

@crewnelson You can get rock in lots of places. I've seen it in Oxford, which is about as far from the sea as you can get.

Like this picture - it's very well done.

I was further up the Kent coast in the 70s but remember enjoying exploring it on days out.

@mercuria Thank you.
Whereabouts were you, Ariel? I was born and brought up in Chatham and know the Kent coast quite well.
July 26th, 2013
@dulciknit I was born in Chatham too (though I have no family connections there). We went abroad when I was very young but when we came back, we lived in Gillingham/Rainham and I went to secondary school in Chatham. It's a small world.
July 26th, 2013
@mercuria It is indeed! I left in 1976 when Lester and I married.
July 26th, 2013
@dulciknit I left in 1982. The Dockyard had closed by then, and it was impossible to get work in the area, so I opted for university instead and moved out of Kent. Funny how things turn out.

Lovely, vintage looking image. Love your processing. Sounds like you have lots of memories of this place!

We have a Herne Bay in NZ! But its an exclusive suburb in Auckland and doesn't looks as neat as this does!

Great shot and view.

Fabulous shot and loved the information!

Nice view, even like the windmills; goodness seaside rock - years since I have had some; so bad for the teeth....................:0)

Nicw shot, as a child in the late 50's I lived in Southend, one summer we had a day trip to Canterbury going on the Waverly from Southend pier to Hern Bay pier

Fab shot! not had rock for donkeys years! lol :)
July 28th, 2013
Hmmm! Interesting. I used to go there regularly in my youth. It looks a bit different now. I once sailed a dinghy into that pier (when it was connected to the land) and now there are funny creatures waving at me from the horizon too. LOL> Nice pic.

Ha, just love this. Great idea picturing it in the rock which I never eat now, saving tooth damage!

The bw photo looks so old fashioned, as if they've used the same one for the sticks of rock since they started making it. The windmills are a bit of a giveaway! I wonder how many children actually look at the photo before throwing it away.

Mac
Fabulous creativity with the frame tied into the rock history. You rock!

Love your processing and composition. My parents lived in Herne Bay for 40 years after my Dad retired and I am in the process of selling their house right now. Herne Bay has changed hugely since they first went there and is really quite a nice typical seaside resort.
