I have been challenged to take a low light portrait for my get pushed challenge this week.
This one is SOOC as I have discovered I really don't know what I'm doing when it comes to editing low light shot and everything I did made it look worse.
What are you using for a light source? It's tough to get the lighting right. I've tried flash lights and they can be too bright. A single lamp. Just keep experimenting with light source til you get the look you are going for. I had this push once and I did selfies in a dark room and closet.
OK. THAT is a gorgeous photo. (and I see I mentioned that back when it was posted) but I think I may need to google low light. That shot, or you anyway, look very lit. I think in my head low light is a dark photo. I thought even yesterdays had too much light in it but in reality I have no idea really.
Either way, I definitely want to try and emulate this selfie. It is amazing!!
@gailmmeek thank you. I liked your first post but deleted the email. Did you mention anything other than a higher iso? I will try that. I feel like just one small light source, like a candle, would have made this a good shot. The nicked natural light just gives it a flatness and it needs a spark.
Low key can be really hard and you got good advice from Amanda and Gail. I think you did a great job. Keep practicing. I love the fancy hot chocolate, what a sweet little face she has..
What a cutie you have. I can just imagine her engrossed with the business of enjoying her hot chocolate whilst you work to create the portrait. I think your idea of a candle would have been perfect. The composition is great, just needs a little "spark" of light to bring it alive.
@Cheesebiscuit I know. It's low key. I will look it up today. When I saw the photo @amandal posted I meant to look it up but life got busy. I will google it and then maybe lock myself in a closet later.
i like this... i specially like the brightest bit being the whipped cream... makes for an interesting focus...
and now i need to look up the diff between low key and low light too! my main trick for playing with light is the live view function which let's me see how varying shutterspeeds will make a shot turn out... but haven't a clue how i'd handle that for a portrait shot... no amount of whipped cream would keep my kids around for as long as it would take me to figure out ;p
@northy I guess I better see if I have a live view function. This is what is so great about this challenge.
There is a link on the next photo to a pretty good low key explanation thingy.
