The step into the Jamaica Wine House. Hidden in St Michael’s Alley, part of a labyrinth of medieval courts and alleys off Cornhill and Lombard Street, the Jamaica Wine House was originally London’s first coffee house, which opened in 1652 and counted Samuel Pepys among its earliest patrons.
The current pub, known locally as “the Jampot”, dates back to 1869 and its wood-panelled bar and high ceilings retain their Victorian character and many original features – the pub even has the original 19th century cooker used to roast coffee beans.
The step however, is thought to remain from the original building.
