7th September 2024

I was up early thanks to the bright light and loud snoring from the other side of the bed! At least I had plenty of time to pack and make breakfast before our 10.00am departure time. I was sad to leave the apartment which although incredibly hot because of the inefficient air-con, it was perfectly positioned and was large and comfortable. We had arranged for our driver to return and pick us p at 10.15 and he was there on the dot.

I had agreed a price with him but in the event, he refused to take any money so we had to force some on him - what a really nice guy! I had booked first class train tickets at a very good price ad had discovered afterwards that they also include the use of a lounge with complimentary soft drinks, hot drinks and snacks. This was great although it was baking hot inside.

As we had over two hours to kill, I changed the remains of our Hungarian currency to euros and found a shop outside with a fridge magnet for my collection. When the tran was finally signed up on the boards, it turned out to be right the other side of the stations and very old. Two station staff (although i now think they were not staff at all), helped us on with our cases, put them on the highest shelf and then wanted money. I gave them fur euros and they complained and said was it for coffee! Seeing as we have managed to get our cases to another country and then travel around it, I hardly needed help then.

The good news is that we had an empty compartment in a carriage, the bad news it was very old and the air-con was rubbish. During the journey I discovered that there was no buffet car and then four armed police officers were obviously looking for someone near the border with Austria and our train was delayed for quite some time. Eventually we had a change of crew and a very helpful Austrian ticket inspector checked out tickets before we eventually arrived in Vienna half an hour late. He also gave us good advice on the Metros to take and were to get off for our accommodation as he had used to live in the very same road!

It was a fairly easy journey and our new apartment is extremely close to the metro which is handy. It is a nice apartment although a lot small er but it benefits form a terrace and very good air-con! A trip to Billa supermarket (just around the corner) for supplies before a sit down and then back off on the Metro for our first Austrian meal in a restaurant I had booked whilst on the train. We enjoyed a good schnitzel and large bar outside as it was so warm.

Final trip back home on the metro and we discovered that the metro station rather randomly had a life size mini and light airplane hanging from the ceiling?!
