Hurricane of 1900 Memorial

Sculptor, David W. Moore
Galveston, TX

The hurricane that struck Galveston, Texas on September 8, 1900 caused the death of over 6,000 people. In contrast, the death toll in Hurricane Katrina, the deadliest recent storm, was 1,836. More info: http://www.1900storm.com/.

I remember seeing a special on the weather channel about it. Lovely memorial.

@peterdegraaff I don't know if other countries build on barrier islands like the U.S., but it's definitely problematic. The rising sea levels are predicted to inundate some places, islands and mainland both. And we spend lots of money and effort trying to stabilize barrier islands that aren't supposed to be stable.... But I guess I'm part of the problem, too, because I love places like Galveston and Nag's Head, North Carolina.
