In my photography class, I wasn't much good at still life photography. I tried rearranging inanimate objects and fiddling with the lighting, but this simple shot was my favorite. No experience is wasted: I have developed a huge respect for photographers who produce effortless-looking still life photos!
I think it is how you respond to the subject that makes a successful still life. Although I like bowls of fruit and floral arrangements, I prefer still lifes of old books and trinkets. I think you've responded here to the beauty of the way this petal has aged and therefore you were able to turn it into a dynamic still life. I love the detail you've picked up by getting really close to the subject!
Thanks, Ann. I just read a book by Anna Quindlen called Still Life with Breadcrumbs, a novel about a photographer whose career took off when she photographed her kitchen, but who has lost her inspriation. Good book!
I have that book on my bookshelf waiting to be read after I finish the one you recommended "God is at Eye Level". Seems I spend too much time on 365 as it takes me forever to read these books! Oh, and the Quindlen book was also recommended by another 365er!
