I like to drive. I actually like to drive the busy streets of Manhattan, weaving in and out of traffic. I love when you can catch all the lights and coast up or down an avenue.
We have two cars -- both are actually the same model but 10 years apart. One is automatic. The other is manual transmission. I usually drive the automatic but I can drive a stick shift. Never have driven this thing in the city. I think I would hate having to always have my foot in the clutch and stopping and starting.
I worked out today although I really really didn't want to. But wouldn't ya know? Felt tons better afterwards.
Song in my head "Drive" by the Cars:
"Who's gonna tell you when, it's too late
Who's gonna tell you things, aren't so great
You can't go on, thinkin, nothin's wrong
Who's gonna drive you home tonight..."
Automatic. Not very macho, I know. I just want to get into my ride and drive. Too many other distractions to be concerned about without playing with my stick.
Glad to hear you had a good workout Ms. T. I am in my automatic transmission vehicle right now heading to the gym. I am so stoked!!!
@adamj Yes, playing with the stick can be distracting. Aaand I'll just let that comment float out there like that. But, on a serious note, sometimes I too just wanna drive and not work to switch gears. Although manual can help one handle the road better. Anyhoo, have a good workout!
I like this capture and prefer a stick shift but it was a bit confusing to step into a Left Hand Drive, I'm used to the stick on my Left and there it was on my Right. Leaving JFK Rentals at 4:30 PM on a Monday. Steep learning curve.
Another great thought provoking photo! My main car is Auto but the trucks & project Range Rover are Manual. I love the auto for ease of use & relaxed driving.
@adamj Nothing non-macho (or is it unmacho? immacho?) about automatics. In fact, it takes a real man to trust the car to decide when to shift, and "macho control freak" is an oxymoron. And Porsche seems to agree with this: http://www.wired.com/autopia/2013/05/porsche-manual-transmission/
@timerskine@adamj I've been meaning to add that I don't think there is anything non-macho about driving an automatic.
Also interesting article, Tim. Perhaps manual transmissions will eventually all go away but there will still be die-hards that want it.
On a personal note, driving and learning to drive a manual has given me a greater appreciation for automatic cars and learning the 'feel' of when a car needs to change gears, hearing the engine, etc. But to zip in and out and around town, I prefer an automatic to do the work for me.
can't stand automatic myself...doesn't feel like the "real" thing somehow! hehehe! Nice shot...and I have to say...you got me in a nostalgic mood with that song...it's such a great song haven't heard it in ages! :)

@andyn it's a Saab. This one is the 900S and the automatic is a Saab 9S.
