Remembering...

Isn't the sun rising over the mountains pretty? Yes this is actually New York. Taken this morning.

I don't need any additional reminders of what today is, but there are still things that make me feel a pit in my stomach, like the sight of extra security. There were cops at my train station this morning, checking bags and containers.

After 9/11/01, that used to be a daily sight in subways, train stations, public spaces. I remember my younger sister and I lived in downtown Manhattan and we used to have a contingency plan if something should happen while we were at work, how we would try to contact each other, where we would try to meet, how we would try to contact family to let them know if we were safe or in danger...

My older sister was actually at the WTC in 1993 when the bombing happened then.

My sister and I usually try to go to the memorial service downtown at the chapel, St. Paul's. Couldn't make it there this morning but I know my sister will make her yearly visit.

I wasn't sure what to post today. I went with this picture to try to portray light and hope.

But I thought I'd share this other photo. It's of the WTC. Pretty cool POV. Taken by the older sister mentioned above on a film camera, probably between the years of 1989-1994.

Beautiful! And. . .yeah. That pit in the stomach feeling.

The day that changed everything. It's difficult to not still yearn for the relatively care free days of living/ working in NY pre-9/11. Wonderful spirit in the photo.

It feels so eerie to see the shot that Melissa took. Something so solid that was once there is gone just like that.
Great pic for today. I'm sure there are many who can use a little light and hope.

@islandk8 isn't the picture a bit eerie. I think that's the only photo she has of it, which is weird considering she went to Pace which is pretty much next door to where the towers were...

@adamj I remember having to get checked into buildings which we normally could go in and out of easily without ID. Things have changed. Some things haven't. Thanks for checking in.

That is strange. I feel like you or I would have taken more pictures of the towers, but at the same time there were no smart phones or ipads back then. If you didn't regularly take pictures you probably wouldn't think to carry a camera with you. Didn't you, Crissy and I walk to the towers one day? We didn't actually go in as I recall. And of course none of us took a picture.

@islandk8 yep we walked to the towers from Washington Square once. You guys were visiting me at NYU. We actually might have gone in to take the subway back up to Greenwich Village though. Can't remember. That was 1994, I think. 19 years ago...? Wow.

@fauxtography365 Wow is right! I also remember buying cigarettes on the way. Lol. It's funny the things you remember.

@islandk8 I remember that day! Remember the Sam Goody that was there? I feel like we went there? And I remember the day our sister took that picture of the towers. It was a sisters day visiting her at Pace. I have a pic too. Wow. Who would have ever thought?
