You know what really grinds my gears? Any Family Guy fans out there? Lol. I love when Peter Griffin says that.
This pic is of my phone at work. Nothing special. Mundane.
Speaking of phones...
It's kinda crazy how texting has even invaded our work lives. On occasion I have resorted to texting coworkers and even supervisors when out at meetings. What's crazier still, is that it's acceptable.
On that note, isn't it annoying when someone (like someone you don't really know and haven't formally given your cell phone number to but he has somehow found it out) tries to start a textual relationship with you without having a mutual conversation about it first??? That really grinds my gears. It's like, dude, really? Let's establish some ground rules first.
Texting can either be discreet or the most intrusive thing ever, depending on how it's handled. I know that I have unspoken rules with texting especially with my male friends. The ones who are more friends with me and not as close to my husband, don't text me at night out of respect to my husband. And vice versa. Just kind of a courtesy thing - not that anything hokey is going on. I get it. Wouldn't necessarily dig it if my man was getting texts at 11pm from a girl who he was casual friends with, just texting him with what she had for dessert that evening or what she's watching on TV. Why make someone else uncomfortable for no reason?
I do like texting. I admit it. But I have some pet peeves about it. What are yours?
Anyhoooo...
Want to experience my slow commute into manhattan? It'll take less than 15 secs of your precious time:
There was a guy I met fairly recently who thought it appropriate to text me one night at midnight, 3am and 4am. The next morning he got a text saying "Did you really think I was awake at those hours?" The worst part is, he did not stop. All of his communications came at the oddest hours of the night. So I just stopped responding and he eventually got the hint, I guess. When I was a kid my dad used to say it's rude to call people after 9pm. I totally understand why now!! Unless you know I am awake and we are conversing, don't text me late at night!! Thank you. Lol
I appreciate that it's Monday, but you must appreciate that a photo of a phone really doesn't meet your followers' expectations after your Sunday Selfie.
Having said that, I have to admit that my own efforts over the past few days have hardly been scintillating. Note to self: must get out more. In the day -- when there's some light about!
@islandk8 lol the dude sounds like a douche canoe. He was booty texting, perhaps? A few years ago I got into a car accident (minor minor fender bender with someone) and exchanges numbers with the dude as well as other pertinent insurance info. Later that day, the dude texted me and asked me out. I was like, Really dude???? Lol. And I totally get why my parents also told me it's rude to call after 9pm unless it's an emergency.
Very thought provoking words and photo. I posted a shot earlier this week that addressed how people are constantly texting and appear to be completely oblivious to what is going on around them. Check it out my project. I think I put up on the 15th of this month. Have a great week. Me, I am on vacation for 2 weeks.
@thirdjoe there are some text conversations that are just bad to have. So much can be lost and miscommunicated when you can't convey tone. And I admit - I have gotten absorbed at times in some heated texts exchanges where it might seem I am oblivious to my surroundings. I hate that. And it's one reason I barely text my husband. We've never had a texting relationship lol. When we started dating, it wasn't really done a lot. If I do text him, it's usually to tell him if I'm running late or to text a 😘 lol.
On the other hand, it's nice to get a random "hey how ya doing text" from someone you haven't heard from in awhile and you know they are busy and just want to say a quick hey.
@snaphappy1 yes doing both on same device but being safe lol. Standing in a crowded metro north train vestibule while others are playing on their phones. OH TECHNOLOGY. Oh the humanity.
Texting is awesome. I never heard of Nightmares on Wax?? Yeah, I did get a female friend of mine into a small scrape with her husband. We texted once in a while, but only during business hours. One day I asked her permission to text her one evening. She said, no problem! Boy, was she wrong ;(
@adamj I'm still thinking up a song for you Mr. Adam. ;) I have stopped texting one of my best male friends because his wife doesn't really like it all that much. So while that sucks for my friendship with him, at the same time, I don't want him to have to go through hell when I text so I haven't. Oh well.
I don't mind texting too much, as long it is not something that is better as a conversation. My pet peeve is people who call and leave the "hey call me back" voicemail.
@baznman I hate those voicemails too. I wish people were more specific. Also if texting is a way of replacing a real convo, I hate when people do it. I think texting can be a way of "hiding" and not dealing with confrontation properly. Once I had therapy with a patient who would always start important topics and concerns with her fiancé with texting. It was her passive way of communicating and opening the door of all sorts of mixed messages.
I've noticed that texts and emails have pretty much replaced phone calls with a lot of younger people. The art of conversation is not well practiced by many anymore. Sad. That being said, I like to text if the messages stay short, no novels!
@soboy5 I like short texts too (but not too short that it's cryptic) with proper punctuation. I've written really long texts at times when I haven't been able to call or don't have someone's email and I need to make sure they get a message right away - especially if I know they wouldn't be able to answer or not at a computer to check email. I try not to do it often, if at all.
Like the topic, like the idea of protocols and good manners. Having said that, I hardly used my old phone but now that I have a smart one I may use it more often. My preferred communication media id eMail and try to respond ASAP.

A happy Monday to you, too!
