Our little group has always been...

...and always will until the end....
~Nirvana

Twenty years ago Kurt Cobain died. Heard it on the radio first while I was driving...somewhere I don't remember where...and thought it was some sick joke.

Love 'em or hate 'em, Nirvana made an impact on music. I wonder if he'd still be hot now if he were alive...such a superficial thought, I know, but I do wonder.

I also wonder what more he could've contributed to music.

He was 27 when he killed himself...just 9 years older than me. 1994. It was the year I was going to turn 18, go off to NYC, and be around during the one of the best music decades of my own life span thus far (and in one of the best cities to live in) -- a time in which Kurt Cobain was a huge influence in music and culture.

He would've only been 47 this year...

Man, I miss that music.

I heard that news on the radio, too. I was a senior in high school, i think. So sad. Loved their music. What on earth made him do that? Isn't it weird how money and fame don't guarantee happiness. What a waste!

I see my flip flops! Perfect song lyric. Cobain was a music legend I'm my opinion. Glad I was around when he was alive. Their MTV Unplugged will always be one of my favorites.

And I feel like we were driving to school when we heard the news of his death on the radio.

@amandal I was a senior in high school too. It was so sad. He never did any of it for fame or money. He really was a troubled soul... :(

@snaphappy1 yep your flip flops are there! And yeah I think I was driving us to school when we heard it on the radio. Nirvana Unplugged was the best...

Love the tones and processing in the shot. The story is great (as always). I remember Cobain's death...I thought it was faked. I was really into conspiracy theories at the time (LONG story) and thought he was murdered. I thought Courtney Love was responsible and used the rise of Hole to validate my claims.

I'm feeling much better now... ;)

Today has always been the anniversary for me, as I didn't find out until the day after. Man, there was a time before regular internet access and 24/7 news?

The band that got me into music, heard them for the first time played by a DJ over here called John Peel. He is, sadly, no longer with us but was brilliant at playing unheard / unknown bands. The energy and aggression coming out of the radio that night really hit home with me. I was hooked from then on in.

I was lucky enough to see them at Reading Festival in 92, the only time I did.

For me they were last great rock n roll band, he was the last great front man.

Rest your troubled soul Kurt

Love the image and the depth of feeling expressed.

@jase_again ah thanks for sharing, Jase. yeah, it's weird how we survived back then without regular internet access...i remembering having to look for the news on it. mostly, it was all over MTV. I remember an interview with Henry Rollins, saying that he was getting faxes from people about the news. Faxes? Lol. These days it would be text or twitter or whatnot.

i never got a chance to see them live. so lucky that you did. definitely was seduced by their energy and aggression. music meant something to me back then...because it meant something to the artists. Now there's so much shit out there I can't even....

@thomastoth thanks, Thomas! Weren't we all into conspiracy theories in the 90s to some degree? ;) I remember feeling incredible astounded and sad about the news, surprised I could be touched deeply by someone I didn't know.

As for Courtney Love. Hmm. Well. She's one big hot mess. Yes, her career catapulted after his death. Would it have gone anywhere if he was still alive? We'll never know. But I can't say I didn't have an appreciation for "Live Through This." She, too , made an impact on music in her own way.

I do remember her in an interview shortly after his death. She looked like hell, eyes puffy from crying, voice raspy, smoking a cig.

@tonydebont thank you, Tony! I've been trying to find a use for this image. I figured this was somewhat applicable.
