All a facade by fbailey

All a facade

I went into Dover town for a few hours yesterday and found myself looking above the shop line at the empty buildings above. I was drawn to the one in the middle with the curved balcony, it was more ornate than its neighbours and looked rather elegant in comparison. All of the shops below which are not shown in the picture are either closed or boarded up. It made me wonder who had lived or worked there previously.
Nice in B&W. I visited Dover Town a few years ago (for work) and was pleasantly surprised by the little architectural gems there were to be found.

@peadar Thanks Peter. Would never have noticed these normally, too busy at ground level I guess. While I was snapping away three people stopped and started conversations. I had to disillusion them that I wasn't a "real" photographer!

@fbailey But you are a real photographer!

@peadar Bless you - I wish!!

This is great! At first glance you could be forgiven for thinking this was taken in Brussels or Amsterdam. The B & W really makes it. Wonderful!

@cindymc Thanks very much! I think the building with the balcony may have been a dance hall years back - I wonder how many couples met there and stayed together ...

Lovely photo - and great in black and white. It does make you wonder about history and the people who lived and worked and played there.

A great capture showing those beautiful old houses.

These are a beautiful collection of buildings, especially the middle one with its convex windows. The 1881 Census has information on who was living or working in any address in the UK - might be worth looking at! Really like this in black and white - shows the details so well.

A lovely looking building, so well presented.. love the choice of processing.. mono seems eminently suitable for this image. Beautifully detailed too.

Not a photographer?? only a photographer would have made the decision to photograph this building and to then convert the resulting image to mono.
a non-photographer wouldn't have looked once never mind twice.. :-)

Makes my neck ache! Interesting how we have become used to converging verticals.. the painters of old (and early photographers) would be turning in their graves! I tend to stick to the old values... I usually leave space all around so I can get them parallel - by tilting the enlarger base board in the old days and by a few sliders/clicks in Photoshop these days. Cheaper but not as satisfying as using a tilt-and-shift lens and more convenient than taking a shot from the second floor of the building behind. Of course, your shot is more realistic in the sense of being like what you see when you look up

@yrhenwr BTW amateurs can be real photographers too! And I agree with @jorlam

@megpicatilly Thanks very much for that information Catherine, will definitely investigate further:)

@jorlam Thank you very much, that is so kind of you:)
@yrhenwr Thanks very much for taking the time to comment, do appreciate it. I've straightened in Photoshop but only horizontally, didn't occur to me to try vertically. Will definitely have a play next time!
