The entrance to St Nicholas Church, Barfreston, Kent - listed as one of the hidden gems of Norman architecture in possibly all of the UK.
It's a small church, about 50 ft from east to west. It's thought to have been founded in the late 11th century by a Norman knight Hugo de Port, and remodelled about 1180 with the addition of over 100 carvings, some of which can be seen in the archway over the door.
It is also a fully functioning church, not a museum.
All the detail that still remains, and all the meaning in the figures above the doorway, just amazing. Lovely capture of this church and what a beautiful image for the word of the day.
Thank you - I love hearing the history of your area.
