Thanks for the advice. I really should have taken more time with this and used exposure compensation. It was a 'grab' shot walking through and the resultant cliffs were way too dark. Think I was heavy handed on the dodge tool ...

It is still effective and you can still recover the contrast through post process - perhaps duplicate and merge?
