Thanks to everyone who commented on my little Zebta picture yesterday - this is his first hatchling. I had to take this on my phone as I didn't want to use a flash.
The parents are getting so used to my peering in the aviary they no longer fly off when I approach, but stay firmly in place on the nest. You can just see a tiny wing if you look closely.
Wow!! Nature is amazing. You look at this little bird and think "Who would want to keep it?" but then if you're patient and wait to see what it will be you are blessed with such beauty!
Oh my goodness, how lovely, I have so many questions, is this the first time you've had babies, will you keep them or will there be a bit of argy bargy when they get older if you do, I'm so intrigued, such a delight to see! (I think I may possibly watch too much of the secret life of the zoo ) Thank you so much for sharing and congratulations!
@suzanne234 I had Zebras many years ago and they had two babies who a friend adopted. My lovebird died and I had this very large empty cage so I bought six little Zebras. I was so careful not to provide a nest box or nesting material. I did however put a few non toxic to birds plants in there, mainly for my benefit. Mistake! They paired off, two pairs kicked out all the seed in two food dishes and shredded the plants for nesting material. The remaining pair have laid six eggs in the tattered remains of the spider plant. This has happened in the space of about 5 weeks. I was hoping the baby was going to be an only child but another egg hatched today. Can I interest you in some finches? They're very sweet ...
@fbailey Oops. seems like despite your efforts, love was in the air! I would so love to take you up on the offer of the extra finches but Gary would insist on never leaving them alone, so basically I would be housebound!
